Aim To analyse changes in haematological values after plateletpheresis in donor population with regard to donor safety. Methods A retrospective study was conducted on first time and repeated healthy donors over a period of eight months in the Blood Transfusion Institute in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo. A total of 75 plateletpheresis procedures performed using Amicus continuous flow cell separator were evaluated. Various pre- and post-donation haematological values were measured in all donors: haemoglobin concentration (Hb), haematocrit (Hct), red blood cell count (RBC), platelet count (PLT), white blood cell count (WBC), mean platelet volume (MPV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC)...

AIMS: The aim was to analyse the use and safety of bisphosphonate treatment for metabolic bone complications in paediatric cancer patients. METHODS: We retrospectively describe our experience with bisphosphonate treatment in 25 childhood cancer patients (aged <18 years) in a single tertiary hospital between 1999 and 2020. RESULTS: The most common primary diagnosis was acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (n = 16) and Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 3)...

PURPOSE: Hypocalcaemia upon arrival (HUA) to hospital is associated with morbidity and mortality in the trauma patient. It has been hypothesised that there is an increased incidence of HUA in patients receiving prehospital transfusion as a result of citrated blood products. This research aimed to determine if there was a difference in arrival ionised calcium (iCa) levels in trauma patients who did and did not receive prehospital transfusion. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of patients with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) > / = 15 and an iCa measured on hospital arrival...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Patients with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) frequently display cardiological and psychiatric diseases, but are also at increased risk for endocrine manifestations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the screening, prevalence, and management of hypoparathyroidism and thyroid disease in patients with 22q11DS, to evaluate the metabolic profile, and to compare these results with current literature and guidelines. DESIGN: We performed a retrospective study of patients with genetically confirmed 22q11DS, followed at the center for human genetics of the University Hospitals Leuven, resulting in a cohort of 75 patients...

Malignant neoplasms are currently one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, posing a major public health challenge. However, recent advances in research in cancer biology and immunity have led to the development of immunotherapy, which is now used on an everyday basis in cancer treatment in addition to surgical treatment, classical cytostatics, and radiotherapy. The efficacy of immunotherapy has promoted the great popularity of this treatment among patients, as well as significant research interest...

A 10-month-old, 3 kg, female spayed Domestic Shorthair cat was presented with a chronic, infected wound at the level of the proximo-lateral left pelvic limb. General physical examination revealed a weight-bearing lameness of the left pelvic limb, which was moderately and circumferentially swollen and edematous proximal to the tarsal joint. On the lateral aspect of the proximal thigh, there was a chronic wound of 1 cm in diameter and an additional exudative skin lesion was present throughout the whole length of the caudo-lateral thigh...

Post-surgical hypoparathyroidism (POSH) is a recognised complication of total thyroidectomy, leading to hypocalcaemia and its associated adverse effects. This retrospective study aimed to determine the incidence of POSH and identify perioperative predictors for its development. Data from patients who underwent total or completion thyroidectomy between January 2017 and July 2022 were retrospectively analysed. The incidence of POSH was assessed, and patients were categorised into transient or prolonged POSH at six months postoperatively...

Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHNNC) is a rare autosomal recessive renal tubulopathy disorder characterized by excessive urinary loss of calcium and magnesium, polyuria, polydipsia, bilateral nephrocalcinosis, progressive chronic kidney disease, and renal failure. Also, sometimes amelogenesis imperfecta and severe ocular abnormalities are involved. The CLDN-16 and CLDN-19 genes encode the tight junction proteins claudin-16 and claudin-19, respectively, in the thick ascending loop of Henle in the kidney, epithelial cells of the retina, dental enamel, etc...

Type 1 Bartter syndrome causes hypokalaemia and metabolic alkalosis owing to mutation in the SLC12A1 gene. Meanwhile, hypocalcaemia is rare in Bartter syndrome, except in type 5 Bartter syndrome. Herein, we describe two siblings with type 1 Bartter syndrome with recurrent transient severe hypocalcaemia. They each visited our hospital several times with chief complaints of numbness in the limbs, shortness of breath and tetany after stresses such as exercise or fever. Severe hypocalcaemia was also observed with a serum calcium level of approximately 6...

Parathyroid lipoadenoma is a rare type of parathyroid adenoma, described as a single parathyroid adenoma with more than 50% fat on histologic examination and an unknown etiology, which is one of the rare causes of primary hyperparathyroidism. The difficulty of parathyroid lipoadenoma is mainly diagnosed by preoperative imaging localization. We hope to arouse attention to the parathyroid adenoma which is difficult to locate through our case report. The patient was a middle-aged male with a body mass index of 38...

Multiple electrolyte disorders, including sodium, potassium and calcium disorders, have been associated with hypertension in pregnancy. Most of these studies failed to evaluate the combined effect of low and high sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride ion concentrations on hypertension in pregnancy. This study evaluates the combined effect of these ion categories (low, normal, high) on hypertension in pregnancy. Biochemical ion assays and blood pressure measurements were carried out on 1074 apparently healthy pregnant women in late third trimester...

Hypocalcaemia is a common electrolyte deficiency that can be found in up to 28% of hospitalised patients. It may affect cardiac and smooth muscle tone, leading to ECG abnormalities and, in rare cases, coronary spasms and heart failure. This is a case of a pregnant woman in preterm labour who developed vasospastic angina and corrected QT interval (QTc) prolongation on ECG from severe hypocalcaemia, which likely occurred due to iatrogenic hypermagnesaemia. She had a negative diagnostic workup for acute coronary syndrome, and her chest pain and QTc prolongation ultimately resolved with intravenous electrolyte repletion...

In adults, admission hypocalcaemia prior to transfusion is associated with increased mortality, increased blood transfusion requirements and coagulopathy. Data on paediatric major trauma patients are limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to describe and synthesise the available evidence relevant to paediatric trauma, admission hypocalcaemia and outcome...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Parathyroid hormone (PTH) resistance, the main biochemical feature of a rare group of disorders known as Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is an uncommon cause of hypocalcaemia. In addition to the biochemical abnormalities, some individuals with PHP may have features of Albright Hereditary Osteodystrophy (AHO). RATIONALE: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a serious acute abdominal disease. AP is often referred to as an unpredictable illness, which can take a mild to severe (fatal) course. AIMS OF THE STUDY: 1) To identify clinical parameters that are significantly related to the clinical course of acute pancreatitis. 2) To compile a scoring system enabling the severity of AP to be predicted when the patient is first admitted to hospital. METHODS: Analysis of available publications and clinical guidance, and retrospective analysis of data on patients hospitalised with AP at our clinic enable us to identify clinical details and laboratory results recorded at the time of patients' admission to hospital that are related to the subsequent severity of the disease...
