Procedural training for nonsurgical fields, such as internal medicine, is an important component of medical education. However, recent changes to accreditation guidelines have resulted in less formal guidance on procedural competency, not only leading to opportunities for individualizing training but also creating potential problems for trainees and training programs. In this article, the authors use internal medicine as an exemplar to review current strategies for procedural education in nonsurgical fields, including procedural simulation, dedicated procedural rotations, and advanced subspecialty training, and highlight an emerging need for learner-specific terminal milestones in procedural training...

Language-appropriate care is critical for equitable, high-quality health care, but educational standards to assure graduate medical trainees are prepared to give such care are lacking. Detailed guidance for graduate medical education is provided by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education through the following: (1) an assessment framework for competencies, subcompetencies, and milestones for trainees and (2) the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Pathways for assessment of trainees' learning environments...

IoT in healthcare brought a technological revolution in rehabilitation, enabling the patients to get rehabilitation in the comfort of their home, while being supervised remotely by the professionals. IoT enabled rehabilitation ensures a best possible way towards recovery, without inflicting further injuries. It also allows customization of rehabilitation plan based on the patient profile and progress, while helping in defining their personalised milestones. The main contribution of this paper is a novel wheelchair based IoT enabled 'XoRehab", exoskeleton for rehabilitation; a device for lower limb, with a backrest mechanism...

This paper presents pose tracking experiments using a supermicrosurgical robot designed to consider teleoperation with multiple surgeons. Currently, existing supermicrosurgical robots assist only the primary surgeon. However, both primary and assistant surgeons need a high-precision motion for critical tasks that can easily damage microtissue. To assist multiple surgeons in supermicrosurgery with a surgical robot, dynamic collision avoidance becomes a critical issue due to the operation in a narrow surgical site...

Based on our experiences in bile acid profiling, this work developed and validated a liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry method to separate endogenous bile acid isomers and quantitatively determine ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), glycoursodeoxycholic acid (GUDCA) and tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) in human plasma. The separation was performed on a CORTECS C18 column with the mobile phase consisting of 1.0 mM ammonium acetate and acetonitrile-methanol (80:20, v/v). UDCA, GUDCA and TUDCA were detected in the negative mode on a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer at the ion transitions of m/z 391 > 391, m/z 448 > 74, m/z 498 > 80, respectively...

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease and a major contributor to numerous health conditions. Despite the high prevalence, costs, and health effects of obesity, physicians are largely unprepared to treat it. Most medical students and residents lack sufficient training in obesity and obesity management. METHODS: We evaluated a two-part team-based learning seminar (TBL) on obesity pathogenesis and treatment for first-year medical students at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (CWRU SOM)...

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this follow-up to a randomized proof-of-concept study was to determine if targeting body shape concern (BSC) has a clinically significant impact on long-term weight change among adult women of higher body weight with BSC. A secondary aim was to observe the maintenance of body image improvements during follow-up. METHOD: In the original 4-week trial, women were randomized to behavioral weight loss recommendations alone (control; n = 15) or combined with the evidence-based body project intervention (n = 17)...

Building a biobank network in developing countries is essential to foster genomic research and precision medicine for patients' benefit. However, there are serious barriers to establishing biobanks in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Ukraine. Here, we outline key barriers and essential milestones for the successful expansion of biobanks, genomic research and personalised medicine in Ukraine, drawing from the experience of other LMICs. A lack of legal and ethical governance in conjunction with limited awareness about biobanking and community distrust are the principal threats to establishing biobanks...

BACKGROUND: Does younger involvement in talent promotion programs (TPPs) facilitate the attainment of higher performance levels? This question is the subject of the present meta-analysis. Many national sport systems have established TPPs such as federations' junior squads (including under-age selection teams) and youth sport academies, and many are making expanding investments in TPPs. TPPs seek to select the most advanced youth high performers at young ages, around puberty or younger, and then strive to further accelerate their performance development...

Advances in single-cell technologies have transformed the ability to identify the individual cell types present within tissues and organs. The musculoskeletal bionetwork, part of the wider Human Cell Atlas project, aims to create a detailed map of the healthy musculoskeletal system at a single-cell resolution throughout tissue development and across the human lifespan, with complementary generation of data from diseased tissues. Given the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders, this detailed reference dataset will be critical to understanding normal musculoskeletal function in growth, homeostasis and ageing...

Precision medicine is part of the logical evolution of contemporary evidence-based medicine that seeks to reduce errors and optimize outcomes when making medical decisions and health recommendations. Diabetes affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide, many of whom will develop life-threatening complications and die prematurely. Growth curves can inform curriculum design and individualised learning. Residency programmes have found growth curves to vary by resident and by milestone.
