BACKGROUND: Collective agreement about the importance of centering equity in health research, practice, and policy is growing. Yet, responsibility for advancing equity is often situated as belonging to a vague group of 'others', or delegated to the leadership of 'equity-seeking' or 'equity-deserving' groups who are tasked to lead systems transformation while simultaneously navigating the violence and harms of oppression within those same systems. Equity efforts also often overlook the breadth of equity scholarship...

PURPOSE: To evaluate a knowledge translation intervention to determine knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy related to HIV and rehabilitation advocacy in physiotherapy students. METHODS: A pre and post-test study was conducted at three physiotherapy-training programs in Sub Saharan Africa - the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Kenya Medical Technical College (KMTC). For each site, the knowledge, attitude and self-efficacy of physiotherapy students were tested pre- and post-intervention using a standardized questionnaire...

PURPOSE: To explore how the gap in knowledge translation around HIV and rehabilitation could be addressed using advocacy. This article describes and reflects on lessons learned from incorporating content on HIV and advocacy into the curricula at three diverse physiotherapy (PT) programs in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: A realistic evaluation approach was followed. Three study sites were purposively chosen to reflect diverse settings with respect to pedagogical approach, university or college, degree or diploma programs, use of technology, and regional prevalence of HIV...

Objectives: This novel critical transdisciplinary scoping review examined the literature on integrated care pathways that consider Black people living with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The objectives were to (a) summarize the extent, nature, and range of literature on care pathways that consider Black populations, (b) summarize how Blackness, race, and racism are conceptualized in the literature, (c) determine how Black people come to access care pathways, and (d) identify how care pathways in research consider the mechanism of injury and implications for human occupation...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
Stephanie Tizi, Rosemary L Nixon
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Patch testing (PT) is essential for making the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). However, the extent of PT undertaken by Australian dermatologists is unknown. The objectives of this study were to determine the rate and type of PT in Australia, the perceived obstacles to PT, and to explore the exposure to PT in dermatology training. METHODS: Data were collected on private PT (analysing Medicare item numbers) and public hospital-based PT (estimated via verbal reports)...

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is defined as the presence of free air in the mediastium in the absence of any obvious precipitating cause. The purpose of this study was to review our experience with this condition, discuss mechanisms and provide a management algorithm. METHODS: A retrospective audit of patients admitted with spontaneous pneumomediastinum between 2003 and 2008 was performed. A total of 17 patients were identified. RESULTS: Common predisposing factors for spontaneous pneumomediastinum were alcohol excess, asthma and illicit drug use...

REVIEW

Several commentators have identified the lack of generalisability and transferability of economic evaluation results. The aims of this study were: (a) to develop a checklist to assess the level of generalisability and transferability of economic evaluations; (b) to assess the generalisability and transferability of economic evaluations between the UK and France using the checklist; (c) to identify reasons for any lack of transferability and generalisability; (d) to assess how the transferability and generalisability of economic evaluations can be improved; and (e) to outline ways in which databases of economic evaluations and journals can assist in this area...
