BACKGROUND: Obesity impacts a child's ability to walk with resulting biomechanical adaptations; however, existing research has not comprehensively compared differences across the gait cycle. We examined differences in lower extremity biomechanics across the gait cycle between children with and without obesity at three walking speeds. METHODS: Full gait cycles of age-matched children with obesity (N = 10; BMI: 25.7 ± 4.2 kg/m2 ) and without obesity (N = 10; BMI: 17...

BACKGROUND: Premature birth rates have slightly increased globally, making its prevention critical for both short-term and long-term health outcomes. Various interventions have been developed in response to the multifaceted risk factors for premature birth, including internet-based programs. These programs offer accessibility and enhanced engagement; however, their overall efficacy in preventing premature births requires thorough evaluation. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to identify the study designs and assess the effectiveness of internet-based interventions in preventing premature birth among pregnant women...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether infants with prenatal diagnosis of meconium peritonitis (MP) have a poorer prognosis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data from infants treated with surgery from January 2008 to December 2020 was conducted. The patients were divided into prenatal diagnosis group and postnatal diagnosis group based on the timing of diagnosis. The intraoperative and postoperative parameters of the two groups of patients were compared. RESULTS: A total of 71 cases of MP were included in the study, with 48 cases in the prenatal diagnosis group and 23 cases in the postnatal diagnosis group...

The aim of this study was to determine whether the relationship between dental age (DA), cervical stage (CS) and chronological age (CA) in Chinese male children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) is similar to that of children without clefts. Panoramic and cephalometric radiographs of 105 male UCLP patients, aged from 8 to 16 years, were collected and compared to 210 age-matched healthy control males. The Demirjian and cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) methods were used to visually examine the radiographs and Spearman's correlation analysis was used to identify differences between the two groups with regards to CS, DA and CA...

Background: There are many nonpharmacological pain management services available to hospitalized youth; however, not all youth are offered these services. Lack of knowledge about resources, difficulty with the referral process, and lack of understanding about nonpharmacological pain management services and when to refer patients are among the main reasons for lack of utilization. Quality improvement (QI) initiatives have grown within hospital settings and can serve to create change in fast-paced environments...

OBJECTIVE: To develop a rapid method for analysing polyphenols, which are potentially active antioxidants against neonatal oxidative stress, from small human milk (HM) volumes. METHODS: Acid and alkaline extractions were compared using two dyes: Folin-Ciocalteu and Fast Blue BB. Linearity, sensitivity, recovery percentage, polyphenol content, precision, and stability were assessed in 14 HM samples and compared using the Kruskal-Wallis H test (p<0.05). The best technique was applied to 284 HM samples to determine their polyphenolic content and its association with maternal diet by multifactorial linear regression...

PURPOSE: Co-administering multiple intravenous (IV) agents via Y-connectors is a common practice in hospitalised and fasting surgical patients. However, there is a lack of reliable data confirming the physical compatibility of some combinations including IV oxycodone, a drug that is gaining increasing popularity in the perioperative period. Concern regarding physical drug incompatibilities precludes concurrent coadministration with other common drugs through a single lumen. This can result in the cessation of infusions to allow the administration of other medications, resulting in exacerbation of acute pain...

In developed countries, vitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains rare but is a leading cause of global blindness. We describe the case of a 10-year-old girl with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) initially presenting mild VAD symptoms, escalating to severe photophobia and reluctance to leave a darkened room due to a self-restricted diet of fast-food french fries. A timely examination revealed severe VAD and vitamin A supplementation resolved her symptoms in three weeks. This case highlights the challenge of obtaining accurate patient history in ASD, emphasizing the need for routine dietary discussions and micronutrient testing, especially at ages nine and 13 when the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends increased vitamin A intake...

Patients with many forms of congenital heart disease (CHD) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy undergo surgical intervention to relieve left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO). Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (CCT) defines the complex pathway from the ventricle to the outflow tract and can be visualized in 2D, 3D, and 4D (3D in motion) to help define the mechanism and physiologic significance of obstruction. Advanced cardiac visualization may aid in surgical planning to relieve obstruction in the left ventricular outflow tract, aortic or neo-aortic valve and the supravalvular space...

BACKGROUND: Standardizing and formalizing consent processes and forms can prevent ambiguities, convey a more precise meaning, and support machine interpretation of consent terms. OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to introduce a systematic approach to standardize and digitize pediatric consent forms, which are complex due to legal requirements for child and legal guardian involvement. METHODS: First, we reviewed the consent requirements from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) and we used 21 Arizona pediatric treatment consents from five healthcare organizations to propose and evaluate an implementation-agnostic Consent for Treatment Framework...

Metabolic biomarkers, particularly glycated hemoglobin and fasting plasma glucose, are pivotal in the diagnosis and control of diabetes mellitus. Despite their importance, they exhibit limitations in assessing short-term glucose variations. In this study, we propose labile hemoglobin as an additional biomarker, providing insightful perspectives into these fluctuations. By utilizing datasets from 40,652 retrospective general participants and conducting glucose tolerance tests on 60 prospective pediatric subjects, we explored the relationship between plasma glucose and labile hemoglobin...
