Late-onset circulatory collapse (LCC) in preterm infants is presumably caused by relative adrenal insufficiency. Because eosinophilia is known to be associated with adrenal insufficiency, we attempted to clarify the relation-ship between eosinophilia and LCC in preterm infants. We divided the cases of the infants (born at < 28 weeks' gestation) admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit in 2008-2010 into 2 groups: those diagnosed with LCC that received glucocorticoids (LCC group), and those who did not receive glucocorticoids (control group)...

Acute-phase reactant serum amyloid A (A-SAA) plays an important role in acute and chronic inflammation and is used in clinical laboratories as an indicator of inflammation. Although both A-SAA and C-reactive protein (CRP) are acute-phase proteins, the detection of A-SAA is more conclusive than the detection of CRP in patients with viral infections, severe acute pancreatitis, and rejection reactions to kidney transplants. A-SAA has greater clinical diagnostic value in patients who are immunosuppressed, patients with cystic fibrosis who are treated with corticoids, and preterm infants with late-onset sepsis...

The aim of the following study is to present the current evidence of antenatal use of corticoids in premature birth. The benefits of antenatal use of corticosteroids after 34 week of gestation is still a process of discussion.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In 1999, 80% of French neonatal centers used corticosteroids, mainly betamethasone (BMT), to prevent or treat bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) [Lee SK, McMillan DD, Ohlson A, et al. Variations in practice and outcomes in the canadian NICU Network 1996-1997. Pediatrics 2000;106:1070-9]. As many data suggested a low risk-benefit ratio, an updated assessment of this use was necessary [Desnoulez L, Empana J, Anceschi M, et al. Prise en charge de l'immaturité pulmonaire en néonatologie : enquête sur les pratiques européennes...
