The clinical burden of traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to grow worldwide, with patients often developing chronic neurological, behavorial, and cognitive deficits. Treatment and management strategies remain a key challenge, given that they target the symptoms and not the underlying pathological response. To advance pre-clinical research and therapeutic developments, there is a need to study treatment strategies that improve brain injury recovery. Cranial osteopathic manipulative medicine (cOMM) is a non-invasive and non-pharmacological strategy that has been shown to improve quality of life for several medical conditions and injuries, and may be able to treat TBI and reduce subsequent symptoms...

CONTEXT: Osteopathic tradition in the cranial field (OCF) stated that the primary respiratory mechanism (PRM) relies on the anatomical links between the occiput and sacrum. Few studies investigated this relationship with inconsistent results. No studies investigated the occiput-sacrum connection from a neurophysiological perspective. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine whether the sacral technique (ST), compared to the compression of the fourth ventricle (CV4) technique, can affect brain alpha-band power (AABP) as an indicator of a neurophysiological connection between the occiput and sacrum...

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is an emerging practice in the healthcare field with increasing popularity and evidence-based therapy. Osteopathic manipulative treatments (OMT) include hands-on manipulations of different body structures to increase systemic homeostasis and total patient well-being. Indeed, this new realm of the whole patient-based approach is being taught in osteopathic schools around the country, and the osteopathic principles of a mind-body-spirit-based treatment are being instilled in many new Doctor of Osteopathy (D...

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue is among the most common symptoms of the long-term effects of coronavirus (long COVID). This study aims to compare the effectiveness of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) combined with physiotherapy treatment (PT) compared to PT alone on fatigue and functional limitations after two months post randomization in adults with long COVID. METHODS: This is a study protocol for a two-arm, assessor-blinded, pragmatic randomized controlled superiority trial...

CONTEXT: A memorandum of understanding was reached between the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) in 2014 outlining the course for a single accreditation system for graduate medical education. This process was completed in 2020 and has included the transition of AOA-accredited neuromusculoskeletal and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) programs into programs now termed "Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine" (ONMM) under the single accreditation system...

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing use of osteopathy, a manipulative complementary and alternative medicine therapy, in the general population, its efficacy continues to be debated. In this era of evidence-based practice, no studies have previously reviewed the scientific literature in the field to identify published knowledge, trends and gaps in empirical research. The aims of this bibliometric analysis are to describe characteristics of articles published on the efficacy of osteopathic interventions and to provide an overall portrait of their impacts in the scientific literature...

Background and Objectives : The techniques directed to the cranial field in osteopathy are the most questioned due to the lack of scientific evidence. In osteopathic practice, manual palpation is essential and, therefore, measuring reliability is fundamental. The objective of this study is to assess the precision and objectification of an educational model in cranial osteopathy based on experience. Materials and Methods : A reliability study was conducted in a cadaver skull where a strain gauge was placed on the sphenobasilar synchondrosis (SBS) of the base of the skull...

The application of cranial osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is always controversial in the literature. Primary respiration related to the movement of spheno-basilar synchondrosis in the adult goes against the knowledge of complete ossification that occurs at this articulation after the pubertal phase. The idea that the operator's hands can communicate with the meninges is difficult to accept. The anatomy shows us that the fascial system involves the meninges and that from the microcellular point of view there are no layers that divide one tissue from another...

BACKGROUND: Several studies showed the effect of osteopathic manipulative treatment on neonatal care in reducing length of stay in hospital, gastrointestinal problems, clubfoot complications and improving cranial asymmetry of infants affected by plagiocephaly. Despite several results obtained, there is still a lack of standardized osteopathic evaluation and treatment procedures for newborns recovered in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The aim of this paper is to suggest a protocol on osteopathic approach (NE-O model) in treating hospitalized newborns...

For the majority of neonates and young infants, appropriate postures and standard physiotherapy succeed in preventing or correcting acquired cranial deformations (fetal due to restricted mobility in utero or postnatal secondary to exclusive dorsal decubitus). However in some cases, when postural management is not efficient, pediatricians will be asked by the parents about the potential benefits of osteopathy. What is osteopathic treatment? At first, diagnostic palpation will identify which suture is normally mobile with the respiratory cycle, and which has limited or absent mobility secondary to abnormal postures...

INTRODUCTION: The term plagiocephaly, from the Greek plagios (oblique) and kephalê (head), means distortion of the head, and refers clinically to cranial asymmetry. Cranial Osteopathy, since it was first proposed, has focussed upon the diagnosis and treatment of birth trauma and cranial asymmetries, and consequently specific therapy for plagiocephalic deformities has been described. Osteopathic manipulation also has been proposed as a treatment for torticollis, a condition associated with plagiocephaly...
