REVIEW
M Blum, W Sekundo
Refractive lenticule extraction (ReLEx/SMILE) is a refractive surgical method developed by the authors in stages primarily for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism, in which a femtosecond laser is exclusively used. In the (ReLEx/SMILE) method a refractive lenticule is generated by the femtosecond laser, which is subsequently extracted through a small incision. Opening of the corneal surface with a flap and use of an excimer laser is no longer necessary. In 2013 the method was newly assessed and classified by the Joint Commisssion for Refractive Surgery (KRC) of the Professional Association of Ophthalmologists (BVA) and the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG)...

PURPOSE: To evaluate clinical outcomes after uncomplicated microincision biaxial cataract surgery and implantation of Incise intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS: This study included 47 eyes of 29 patients (mean age 62.2 ± 8.6 years), who underwent 1.4-mm biaxial cataract surgery with implantation of the Incise IOL (Bausch and Lomb). At third month, surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) was calculated. Three, 6 and 12 months postoperatively, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), corrected near visual acuity (CNVA) LogMAR ETDRS, spherical equivalent refraction (SER), photopic distance corrected contrast sensitivity (CS) with and without glare (85 cd/m(2)) (CSV-1000) were assessed...

Purpose We describe a scleral suture fixation technique for dislocated plate haptic toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Materials and methods A double-armed 10-0 straight polypropylene suture was passed into the eye from the sclera (2 mm away from the limbus). A suture needle was passed through the hole on the corner of the IOL and pulled out from the paracentesis with a 27-gauge needle. Afterward, the suture needle was reinserted from the same paracentesis and then removed from the eye with the help of a 27-gauge needle entering the eye from a nearby point to the first scleral entrance...

PurposeSeverely subluxated crystalline lenses pose a difficult situation to anterior segment surgeons and can only be managed surgically by removal of the lens as well as the capsular bag. Several techniques have been described in literature for the management of such cases. We describe a modified technique of endocapsular lens aspiration by the limbal route for lens extraction through small incisions on the cornea.Patients and methodsThirty-two eyes of 16 consecutive patients with severely subluxated crystalline lenses were recruited in the study...

PURPOSE: In this case report, we describe the surgical procedure of corneal inlay preparation and corneal pocket creation using a femtosecond laser system. CASE REPORT: A 7-year-old girl who presented with unilateral paracentral corneal thinning underwent the surgical procedure of corneal inlay. Preoperatively, the refraction was +10.00-6.00 × 170. One month after the procedure, astigmatism and hyperopia were decreased and the refraction was +5.00-1.25 × 110. CONCLUSION: Femtosecond laser-assisted pocket creation for the implantation of corneal inlays offers accuracy of pocket parameters, enhancing predictability, resulting in better final outcomes, and improving the safety of the procedure...

Our purpose is to present a broad review about the principles, early history, evolution, applications, and complications of femtosecond lasers used in refractive and nonrefractive corneal surgical procedures. Femtosecond laser technology added not only safety, precision, and reproducibility to established corneal surgical procedures such as laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and astigmatic keratotomy, but it also introduced new promising concepts such as the intrastromal lenticule procedures with refractive lenticule extraction (ReLEx)...
