INTRODUCTION. Multiple sclerosis (MS) it is not considered any more a rare disease in Latin America. Most of the Latin American countries have reported moderate or lower prevalence data. However only very few countries have developed therapeutic guidelines. LACTRIMS prepared this consensus document with specific recommendations for the treatment of the disease. DEVELOPMENT. Experts on treatment and clinical research on MS were invited by LACTRIMS in order to generate a initial document to be discussed in Quito, Ecuador...

A very high prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) has been reported in some Western European and North American countries. The few surveys of MS epidemiology in South America reveal lower prevalence rates, implying that susceptibility varies between distinct ethnic groups, thus forming an important determinant of the geographic distribution of the disease. The objective of this study is to review MS prevalence estimates in different Latin American and Caribbean countries. We reviewed surveys of regional MS prevalence from 1991 to 2011...

INTRODUCTION. The current batteries such as the Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests (BRB-N) for evaluating cognitive decline in patients with multiple sclerosis are complex and time-consuming. AIM. To obtain normative values and validate a new battery. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. Four neuropsychological tests were finally included (episodic memory, the Symbol-Digit Modalities Test, a category fluency test, and the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test). Normative values (overall and by age group) were derived by administering the battery to healthy subjects (5th percentile was the limit of normal)...

INTRODUCTION: The first epidemiological studies on multiple sclerosis (MS) around the world pictured a north to south latitudinal gradient that led to the first genetic and environmental pathogenic hypothesis. MS incidence seems to be increasing during the past 20 years based on recent data from prospective studies performed in Europe, America and Asia. This phenomenon could be explained by a better case ascertainment as well as a change in causal factors. The few prospective studies in our area together with the increase in the disease in other regions, justifies an epidemiological MS project in order to describe the incidence and temporal trends of MS...

This cost-of-illness analysis is based on information from 1.848 patients in Spain and is part of a Europe-wide study on the costs of multiple sclerosis. The objective was to analyze the costs and quality of life (QOL) related to the level of disease severity and progression. Patients were identified by the Asociación Española de Esclerosis Múltiple (AEDEM) and participated in the survey by answering a mail questionnaire (response rate 31.8%). In addition to details on the disease (type of disease, relapses, level of functional disability), the questionnaire asked for information on all resource consumption, medical, non-medical, work absence and informal care, as well as utility (QOL)...

BACKGROUND: Alpha and beta interferon (IFN-alpha and beta) treatment is associated with the synthesis of thyroid autoantibodies and the development of autoimmune thyroid diseases. METHODS AND RESULTS: We have retrospectively evaluated their effect in patients with chronic viral hepatitis (CH) (n = 118) and multiple esclerosis (ME) (n = 10). Thyroid dysfunction has been detected in 7.4% of patients, and seroconversion in 4.7%. CONCLUSIONS: Pre-treatment antithyroid antibodies do not predispose to altered thyroid function, after IFN therapy; their presence should not contraindicate IFN treatment...

It is aimed to recover, considering its historical value, a semiological sign described in 1931 by an eminent neurologist of Rio de Janeiro, together with a master of the French neurology. In the article by Alajouanine and Akerman, named "Attitude of the hand in an astereognostic monobrachial crisis of multiple esclerosis", a semiologic alteration was described which was characterized by "an instability in the attitude of the fingers, which is observed mainly with the hand extended in the attitude of swearing"...

We present our experience at the University of Chile Hospital with 1203 cases of laparoscopic cholecistectomy between April 1991 and July 1993. In only 36 patients ultraselective cholangiography was performed. In 88 cases an endoscopic cholangiography was performed prior to surgery because of suspicion of choledocolithiasis. In 31 of them choledocolithiasis was demonstrated, and was successfully treated by papilotomy in 30 of them. In 5.8% of cases coversion to open surgery was necessary: 1.4% in chronic cholecystitis, 13% in acute cholecystitis and 39% in cases with fibrosis and esclerosis of gallbladder with or without biliary digestive fistula...
