PURPOSE: A growing body of evidence suggest it is safe to ligate the ureter of poorly functioning renal moieties during renal transplantation. Herein, we present clinical outcomes and data on hydronephrosis progression in pediatric cases associated with ectopic ureters and obstructive ureteroceles. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective data collection on 35 consecutive patients (23 female, 12 male) who underwent ureteral clipping between 02/2011 and 08/2016. Patients were divided in four groups [I: duplex system (DS) with ectopic ureter (45...

BACKGROUND: The majority of iliac venous obstructions occur on the left side, and endovascular therapy has become the first line treatment for this condition. A left common iliac venous stent will protrude into the inferior vena cava (IVC) to some extent, thereby covering the contralateral common iliac vein (CIV) outflow. This may increase the risk of thrombosis of the contralateral iliac vein. The aim of this paper was to determine the rate of, and factors associated with, contralateral lower limb venous thrombosis after stenting, and to evaluate the results of salvage revascularisation...

Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease with manifestations in multiple vascular beds. Ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) metrics relate to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. However, the relation between ideal CVH metrics and asymptomatic polyvascular disease (polyVD) is unknown. We collected information on the 7 CVH metrics among 5,224 participants aged ≥40 years from 2010 to 2011. Intracranial artery stenosis, extracranial artery stenosis, and lower extremity artery disease were detected by transcranial Doppler, duplex sonography, and by calculating ankle-brachial index...

Lymphedema distichiasis syndrome (LDS) is a rare, autosomal dominant genetic condition, characterized by lower limb lymphedema and distichiasis. Other associated features that have been reported include varicose veins, cleft palate, congenital heart defects, and ptosis. We update a previously reported family with a pathogenic variant in FOXC2 (c.412-413insT) where five affected individuals from the youngest generation had congenital renal anomalies detected on prenatal ultrasound scan. These included four fetuses with hydronephrosis and one with bilateral renal agenesis...

Harmful cyanobacteria have been an important concern for drinking water quality for quite some time, as they may produce cyanotoxins and odorants. Microcystis and Cylindrospermopsis are two common harmful cyanobacterial genera detected in freshwater lakes and reservoirs, with microcystins (MCs) and cylindrospermopsin (CYN) as their important metabolites, respectively. In this study, two sets of duplex qPCR systems were developed, one for quantifying potentially-toxigenic Microcystis and Microcystis, and the other one for cylindrospermopsin-producing cyanobacteria and Cylindrospermopsis...

Most congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are sporadic, but familial occurrence has been described, suggesting a genetic contribution. Copy‑number variations (CNVs) were detected in patients with CAKUT to identify possible novel genomic regions associated with CAKUT. CNVs were investigated in 7 children with CAKUT from three unrelated families using array comparative genomic hybridization: female monozygotic twins with bilateral duplex collecting system/vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)/unilateral renal hypodyspasia (URHD); two male siblings with VUR/URHD; 3 male second cousins, one with bilateral VUR/URHD, one with bilateral VUR and one with ureterovesical junction obstruction (UVJO)...

OBJECTIVE: Endothermal heat-induced thrombosis (EHIT) is a known complication of endothermal venous ablation procedures. EHIT can lead to deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism, which cause significant disability and, rarely, death. Other studies have evaluated risk factors for EHIT. There is an accepted grading system for EHIT, but there is no consensus on treatment type, duration, or follow-up. We retrospectively evaluated all cases of EHIT after radiofrequency ablation or endovenous laser ablation at our institution during a 7-year period, focusing on classification, treatment, and outcomes of EHIT...

Ureteral extension of Wilms tumor (WT) is a rare occasion. The association of duplex collecting system and WT is extremely rare. Ureteral extension of WT in a duplex collecting system is an unreported entity to date. A 10-year-old girl presenting with WT extending into upper pole ureter of duplex system is reported to emphasize the importance of preoperative diagnosis to plan step by step surgery in this rare coincidental situation.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in gene regulation and cancer development. Nowadays, it is still a challenge to detect low-abundance miRNAs. Here, we present a magnetic fluorescent miRNA sensing system for the rapid and sensitive detection of miRNAs from cell lysates and serum samples. In this system, albumin nanoparticles (Alb NPs) were prepared from inherent biocompatible bovine serum albumin (BSA). A large number of fluorescent dyes were loaded into Alb NPs to make Alb NPs serve as signal molecular nanocarriers for signal amplification...

Because of advancements in fetal imaging, anatomic variants of the genitourinary tract are most often discovered in the antenatal period. As such, general internists are less likely to encounter adult patients with previously undiagnosed anatomic abnormalities of the renal collecting system, such as duplicated kidneys. These abnormalities put patients at risk for urinary obstruction and recurrent infections of the urinary tract. We report the case of a 40-year-old diabetic patient with a previously undiagnosed duplex kidney who had recurrent episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis triggered by urinary tract infections...

In the present study, a generalized approach for molecular structure characterization is introduced, based on the relation frequency matrix (F) representation of the molecular graph and the subsequent calculation of the corresponding discrete derivative (finite difference) over a pair of elements (atoms). In earlier publications (22- 24), an unique event, named connected subgraphs, (based on the Kier-Hall's subgraphs) was systematically employed for the computation of the matrix F. The present report is a generalization of this notion, in which eleven additional events are introduced, classified in three categories, namely, topological (terminal paths, vertex path incidence, quantum subgraphs, walks of length k, Sach's subgraphs), fingerprints (MACCs, E-state and substructure fingerprints) and atomic contributions (Ghose and Crippen atom-types for hydrophobicity and refractivity) for F generation...

Aim. Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is rarely associated with a duplex collecting system. We review this unusual anomaly in terms of presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and surgical management. Method. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients diagnosed with a duplex system with UPJO. Result. Sixteen patients (6 girls, 10 boys) with 18 moieties were treated surgically and four patients were treated conservatively. The median age at surgery was two years (range, 2 months to 7 years)...

Metatranscriptomics provides an opportunity to identify active microbes and expressed genes in complex soil communities in response to particular conditions. Currently, there are a limited number of soil metatranscriptome studies to provide guidance for using this approach in this challenging matrix. Hence, we evaluated the technical challenges of applying soil metatranscriptomics to a highly diverse, low activity natural system. We used a non-targeted rRNA removal approach, duplex nuclease specific (DSN) normalization, to generate a metatranscriptomic library from field collected soil supporting a perennial grass, Miscanthus x giganteus (a biofuel crop), and evaluated its ability to provide insight into its active community members and their expressed protein-coding genes...

INTRODUCTION: Symptomatic pediatric ureterocele has diverse manifestations, making evidence-based management impractical. Thus, detailed visualization of ureterocele anatomy prior to first surgical incision is invaluable. Retrograde ureterocelogram (RUC) is a simple, underutilized radiologic technique that can be performed during cystoscopy. This study sought to determine whether RUC changes surgical management by more accurately depicting the complex ureteral and ureterocele anatomy, compared with renal ultrasound (US) and voiding cystourethrography (VCUG)...

Diagnostic imaging in pediatric urology has traditionally relied upon multiple modalities based on availability, use of ionizing radiation, and invasiveness to evaluate urological anomalies. These modalities include ultrasonography, voiding cystourethrography, fluoroscopy and radionuclide scintigraphy. Magnetic resonance urography (MRU) has become increasingly useful in depicting more detailed abdominal and pelvic anatomy, specifically in duplex collecting systems, ectopic ureter, ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, megaureter and congenital pelvic anomalies...

The innate immune system is the first line of the cellular defence against invading pathogens. A critical component of this defence is the capacity to discriminate foreign RNA molecules, which are distinct from most cellular RNAs in structure and/or modifications. However, a series of rare autoimmune/autoinflammatory diseases in humans highlight the propensity for the innate immune sensing system to be activated by endogenous cellular double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs), underscoring the fine line between distinguishing self from non-self...
