Neurofibromatosis is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by tumors of the nervous system and skin. Plexiform neurofibromas are common complications of neurofibromatosis type 1 and can cause large facial deformities. Vascular anomalies are in turn a rare manifestation of neurofibromatosis. We present the case of a 48-year-old female patient with right hemifacial neurofibromatosis associated with venous vascular malformation, previously treated surgically and then with sclerosing agents, determining severe residual facial deformity...

We describe a rare case of a 20-year-old man who presented with an extensive facial and orbital venous malformation associated with multiple intracranial venous malformations. The co-existence of cerebrofacial venous malformations points towards a common final pathway in development of these malformations. Our findings are consistent with few previous similar case descriptions. In addition, we describe some novel observations which, to the best of our knowledge, have not been described in the literature. This case reinforces the concept of metameric and segmental distribution of cerebrofacial vasculature, and the aberrations thereof leading to the metameric venous malformations, as proposed by Lasjaunias et al...

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a rare, noninherited neurovascular disorder characterized by abnormal vasculature in the brain, skin, and eye. Patients with SWS characteristically have facial capillary malformation, also known as port-wine birthmark, a leptomeningeal vascular malformation seen on contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging images, abnormal blood vessels in the eye, and glaucoma. Patients with SWS have impaired perfusion to the brain and are at high risk of venous stroke and stroke-like episodes, seizures, and both motor and cognitive difficulties...

Orbital and periorbital venolymphatic malformations (VLMs) are benign congenital vascular lesions and constitute 1%-3% of all orbital masses. Widespread facial venous malformations have a high incidence of associated intracranial developmental venous anomalies (DVAs). In such cases, there can be a sudden increase in proptosis following upper respiratory infection or minor trauma. Numerous percutaneous intralesional sclerosing agents like sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS), bleomycin, doxycycline, ethanol, and OK-432 (Picibanil) have been used for treating VLMs...

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous sclerotherapy for maxillofacial venous malformations. STUDY DESIGN: Patients who had venous malformations involving the masticatory muscles and who underwent sclerotherapy were enrolled in this retrospective study. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients (13 female, 11 male; mean age 21 years) were analyzed. Major clinical symptoms were swelling (100%) and intralesional pain (54%)...

BACKGROUND: Peripheral vascular malformations (VMs) may lead to disfigurement of the body and face, potentially impairing aesthetic appearance. Yet, data on appearance in this population is limited. This study aimed to examine appearance-related concerns and their impact on health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in patients with VMs. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 384 adults and 194 children with VMs were invited to complete the Outcome Measures for VAscular MAlformations (OVAMA) questionnaire to evaluate potential appearance-related concerns on a five-point verbal-rating scale, with higher scores indicating more appearance-related concerns (e...

OBJECTIVES: Sclerotherapy for venous malformation has been widely used; however, there are no guidelines to assess the effectiveness of different sclerotherapy agents. We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis to investigate the effectiveness of sclerotherapy agents for venous malformation. METHODS: Three electronic databases were searched from their inception (1950) to April 29, 2021. Studies comparing the effectiveness of different sclerotherapy agents were included...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic basis of three children with unexplained mental retardation/developmental delay. METHODS: Peripheral venous blood samples were collected for routine G-banding karyotyping analysis and chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA). Whole exome sequencing (WES) was also carried out for patient 3. RESULTS: The karyotypes of the 3 children were normal. The result of CMA analysis of patient 1 was arr[GRCh37]: 2q22/3(145 128 071-145 159 029)×1, with a 31 kb deletion, which was predicted to be a pathogenic copy number variation...

Venous vascular malformations can be challenging, especially in an elderly patient. As these lesions can present with ulceration, deformity, pain, and swelling resulting from thrombi formed due to low flow (palpable phleboliths), removing them can be important for the well-being of the patient. A 79-year-old patient presented with a giant venous malformations occupying the left hemiface and a deprivation amblyopia in his left eye. Successful surgical resection and reconstruction was achieved and the patient was very pleased with his new appearance...

A 59-year-old man presented with worsening left-sided eye pain and headache from a left orbital venous-dominant venolymphatic malformation. He reported a history of sclerotherapy, experiencing only transient relief with this procedure. Oral analgesia had not helped alleviate the pain. He described the pain as dull and intermittent, and noted worsening with physical exertion. Physical examination revealed dense left optic neuropathy, motility restriction, enophthalmos, and Valsalva-induced proptosis. Given baseline enophthalmos and poor vision affecting the left eye, glue embolization without surgical resection was offered...

Several surgical methods have been employed, but the management of orbital cavernous venous malformations at the orbital apex remains challenging. The authors present an endonasal endoscopy-assisted removal of an orbital apex cavernous venous malformation compressing the optic nerve with the addition of an inferomedial conjunctival approach. A 43-year-old Asian man presented with an orbital cavernous venous malformation incidentally found radiographically with a history of decreased vision of 20/50 oculus dexter (OD)...

Intraosseous venous malformations represent a subtype of venous vascular malformations that arise primarily in bone. In the head and neck, intraosseous venous malformations are most frequently found in the skull, skull base, and facial skeleton, with location at the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve perhaps the most widely recognized. These non-neoplastic lesions are characterized by dilated venous channels with characteristic internal bony spicules on CT but may present with a more complex appearance on MR imaging and may share features with more aggressive lesions...

PURPOSE: Cavernous sinus dural arterio-venous malformations (dAVF) represent a pathologic connection between branches of the internal and/or external carotid artery and the cavernous sinus. Standard endovascular approaches for dAVF treatment are transvenous embolization through the inferior petrosal sinus or the facial vein and transarterial embolization. These approaches are not always successful or feasible, and alternative techniques are required. Here, we present a case series of a minimally invasive transorbital approach with surgical exposure and catheterization of the superior ophthalmic vein for transvenous fistula coiling...

In 2014, Chapot et al. introduced the pressure cooker technique (PCT), conceived to control undesired reflux of the embolic agent during the treatment of brain arterio-venous malformations (bAVMs). Since then, this technique increased in popularity and it has been extensively used. We present five consecutive cases in which the original PCT was simplified using nylon coils instead of platinum coils and acrylic glue, hence the name of 'Simplified Pressure Cooker Technique' (sPCT). The aim was to obtain a safer, precise and faster creation of the plug to control cohesive embolic agent reflux during the treatment of brain and facial vascular malformations...

Intraosseous benign lesions rarely involve the zygoma, and intraosseous venous malformation is most commonly reported condition in the previous literature. A neurofibroma (NF) arising from the zygoma has not been reported before. Here, the authors present a 37-year-old female who developed solitary NF of the right zygoma. Surgical intervention is usually required for the treatment of a solitary NF.
