Absence status epilepticus (ASE) is the most common type of status epilepticus in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE). Like absence seizure, ASE is characterized by generalized spike-and-wave discharges (GSWDs) on the electroencephalogram (EEG). Once considered specific for IGE, GSWDs have increasingly been observed in other forms of epilepsy, as well as in patients with no prior epilepsy. Here, we report three patients with different types of nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) in which the EEG correlate was GSWDs: a 44-year-old woman with juvenile absence epilepsy who manifested ASE, a 73-year-old woman with anoxic brain injury complicated by NCSE with well-formed GSWDs (as seen in IGE and de novo ASE), and a 41-year-old woman with frontal lobe epilepsy who developed focal NCSE with impaired consciousness...

BACKGROUND: Children with recent or acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections are susceptible to a number of neurological complications, including encephalopathy and seizures. Within the phenomenon of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), patients may be encephalopathic or have other nervous system sequelae. The electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns accompanying neurological complications of COVID-19 infection have been reported but primarily in case reports or small case series...

Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is characterized by rapid cognitive and neuropsychiatric impairment. The Heidenhain variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is known for isolated visual disturbance that precedes other features. Periodic sharp wave complexes on EEG are typical of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, but at the onset, the electroclinical pattern may be unclear and suggest the hypothesis of a non-convulsive status epilepticus. Furthermore, non-convulsive status epilepticus and sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease could coexist simultaneously...

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Disorder of consciousness can lead to irreversible sequelae without proper intervention. Consequently, early diagnosis and treatment are of paramount importance in patients with disorder of consciousness. ABSTRACT: Disorder of consciousness (DOC) has various etiologies. Here, we report a case in which DOC following general anesthesia was suspected as being due to the first episode of nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). An elderly man in his 80s underwent uneventful tumor resection surgery under general anesthesia for extramammary Paget's disease...

BACKGROUND: Status epilepticus is the most common neurological emergency presenting to pediatric emergency departments. Nonconvulsive status epilepticus can be extremely challenging to diagnose, however, requiring electroencephalographic (EEG) confirmation for definitive diagnosis. We aimed to determine the feasibility of achieving a good-quality pediatric EEG recording within 20 minutes of presentation to the emergency department. METHODS: Single-center prospective feasibility study in Cork University Hospital, Ireland, between July 2021 and June 2022...

BACKGROUND: Status epilepticus is associated with significant morbidity and mortality and is divided into convulsive status epilepticus and nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). OBJECTIVE: This review provides a focused evaluation of NCSE for emergency clinicians. DISCUSSION: NCSE is a form of status epilepticus presenting with prolonged seizure activity. This disease is underdiagnosed, as it presents with nonspecific signs and symptoms, most commonly change in mental status without overt convulsive motor activity...

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to explore the differences in status epilepticus (SE) management among pediatric neurology, emergency medicine, and intensive care specialists in Turkey. METHODS: A 22-item questionnaire regarding first-, second-, and third-line management strategies of SE including demographic characteristics and common etiologies according to the specialty of participants was mailed to 370 specialists working in Turkey. RESULTS: A total of 334 participants (response rate 90%) comprising 136 pediatric neurologists, 102 pediatric emergency medicine specialists, and 96 pediatric intensive care specialists completed the survey...

BACKGROUND: Second-line iv antiseizure medications (ASMs) are used to treat status epilepticus (SE), but in the emergency room setting, there might be other intended and unintended indications for administration. We wanted to explore these different indications and assess the actual usage of first- and second-line ASMs for SE with reference to other uses, such as for SE mimics. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we searched the electronic patient registry with the following terms: "epilepsy", "SE", and "seizure", during 2015...

Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and reduced diffusion (AESD) is characterized by biphasic seizures following febrile viral infections and delayed reduced diffusion of the cerebral white matter on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) (bright tree appearance, BTA). However, hypoxic encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and AESD-mimicking imaging findings has not been reported. We report a case of hypoxic encephalopathy due to suffocation with concomitant biphasic seizures and BTA, mimicking AESD...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of the Status Epilepticus Severity Score (STESS) and the Epidemiology-based Mortality score (EMSE) in predicting 30-day mortality and SE (Status epilepticus) cessation, and their prognostic performance in subgroups of patients with specific characteristics. METHODS: We reviewed consecutive episodes of SE occurring in patients aged ≥14 years at Baggiovara Civil Hospital (Modena, Italy) from 2013 to 2021. We evaluated the predictive accuracy of EMSE and STESS for 30-day mortality and SE cessation through stepwise regression binary logistic models adjusted for possible univariate clinical confounders...

INTRODUCTION: Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) is a fatal neurodegenerative condition caused by prion proteins. Cortical and subcortical diffusion-weighted imaging restriction on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is associated with sCJD. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) results from impaired vessel autoregulation due to an identifiable trigger, which is associated with subcortical fluid-attenuated inversion recovery changes on MRI. We report a case of sCJD initially presenting with PRES...

Optic neuritis is an inflammatory demyelinating disorder that primarily affects the optic nerve and is often associated with multiple sclerosis. While it is rare for optic neuritis to be accompanied by autoimmune encephalitis, it can occur in some cases. A 65-year-old woman with bipolar disorder presented with a progressively altered mentality. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed no definite abnormal findings. Electroencephalography revealed nonconvulsive status epilepticus. Cerebrospinal fluid study and autoimmune and paraneoplastic encephalitis antibodies were negative...

We report a case of a 73-year-old man who developed nonconvulsive status epilepticus as a complication of cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome after carotid endarterectomy for carotid artery stenosis. On postoperative day 1, the patient experienced headaches and vomiting. Resting N -isopropyl- p -[123 I] iodoamphetamine single-photon emission computed tomography showed increased cerebral blood flow to the entire right hemisphere, and the patient was diagnosed with cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome. He was treated with antihypertensive and antiseizure medications, sedated using propofol, intubated, and placed under mechanical ventilation...
