Ciprofloxacin (CFX) is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is widely used to treat bacterial infections in humans and other animals. However, its unwanted occurrence in any (eco)system can affect nontarget bacterial communities, which may also impair the performance of the natural or artificially established bioremediation system. The problem could be minimized by optimization of operational parameters via modeling of multifactorial tests. To this end, we used a Box-Behnken design in response surface methodology (RSM) to generate the experimental layout for testing the effect of the CFX biodegradation for four important parameters, that is, temperature (°C), pH, inoculum size (v/v %), and CFX concentration (mg L-1 )...

The detection of post-translational modifications of proteins is an important comprehensive research area. Over the years, proteomic studies involving protein acetylation have attracted a great deal of attention. In the present study, we have focussed on the acetylation of histidine and the intrinsic stability of b1 -ion of oxazolone ring and/or with side chain imidazole bicyclic product. The formation of oxazolone structure may occur when an amino moiety undergoes acetylation reaction and when it is present in the vicinity of the side chain imidazole moiety...

INTRODUCTION: Maximal contact between the patients and Health Care Workers (HCWs) happens in the Intensive Care Units (ICU). Control of nosocomial infections requires compliance with hand hygiene and contamination free surfaces. AIM: To determine the colonization of potential pathogens in the hands of HCWs and frequent contacted environmental surfaces. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted between September 2012 and May 2013 at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospital...

BACKGROUND: External ventricular (EVD) is a life saving procedure and involves insertion of a catheter in ventricular space to drain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Our objective of this study was to determine the culture and sensitivity (C/S) pattern in patients with EVD infection. METHODS: This cross sectional study was conducted in Department of Neurosurgery, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad from December 1, 2008 to January 31, 2010. All admitted patients who had acute hydrocephalus, underwent EVD insertion after excluding meningitis and ventriculitis by physical examination and per operative CSF sampling...

UNLABELLED: Endophytic bacteria are harmless in most plant species; and known to boost the growth and development of the host plants probably by secreting growth hormones. The isolation, identification and screening of endophytic bacteria for the plant growth regulators like cytokinin are needed to get the leads for their applications in agriculture sector. We describe the isolation and identification of the bacterial endophytes from the leaves of Sambung Nyawa [Gynura procumbens (Lour...

Bloodstream infection (BSI) is a significant complication following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). Corticosteroids mask inflammatory responses, delaying the initiation of antibiotics. We reviewed medical records of 69 allo-SCT patients who had been on >0.5 mg/kg prednisolone to investigate the efficacy of weekly surveillance blood cultures. A total of 36 patients (52%) had positive cultures, 25 definitive BSI and 11 probable BSI. Pathogens in definitive BSI were Staphylococcus epidermidis (n=7), S...

COMPARATIVE STUDY

Previously, we have reported that two clustered cat genes from Acenitobacter lwoffi K24 had different arrangements, catB1C1A1 and catB2A2C2 (Kim, S.I., S.-H. Leem, J.-S. Choi, Y.H. Chung, S. Kim, Y.-M. Park, Y.K. Park, Y.N. Lee, and K.-S. Ha. 1997, J. Bacteriol. 179, 5226-5231). By further analysis of the organization of the cat1 gene cluster, we obtained a complete sequence of the catB1 gene, which encoded 40.8-kDa polypeptide containing 379 amino acids, and found a open reading frame (ORF) coding a putative regulatory protein in upstream region of catB1 on plasmid pCD1-1...
