BACKGROUND: Borreliosis is a widely distributed disease. Neuroborreliosis may present with unspecific symptoms and signs and often remains difficult to diagnose in patients with central nervous system symptoms, particularly if the pathognomonic erythema chronica migrans does not develop or is missed. Thus, vigilance is mandatory in cases with atypical presentation of the disease and with potentially severe consequences if not recognized early. We present a patient with neuroborreliosis demonstrating brain stem and vestibular nerve abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging...

We present recent advances in the genetics of recurrent vertigo, including familial episodic ataxias, migraneous vertigo, bilateral vestibular hypofunction and Meniere's disease.Although several vestibular disorders are more common within families, the genetics of vestibulopathies is largely not known. Genetic loci and clinical features of familial episodic ataxias have been defined in linkage disequilibrium studies with mutations in neuronal genes KCNA1 and CACNA1A. Migrainous vertigo is a clinical disorder with a high comorbidity within families much more common in females with overlapping features with episodic ataxia and migraine...

Among varieties of migraine characteristic of liquidators of effects of the Chernobyl catastrophy and ChNPP personnel migraine with a manifest vestibular component holds a prominent place. As many as 803 middle-aged patients, average age (39.6 +/- 11.8) years, were examined. Among these were the ChNPP personnel, liquidators, and migrators from Pripyat, who had received low doses of radiation to 0.5 rem. Used in the examination were questionnaire survey (HOACK), vestibular tests (Uemura, Fukuda, etc.), nistagmography, cardiography with Takagasi loading tests, multisensory evoked potentials...

This study presents the results of a hospital survey on Lyme disease in children living in upper Normandy, a region that is quite densely wooded (with 18% forest areas and woods). The aim of this survey was to assess the prevalence of this disease in children from the Seine-Maritime and L'Eure, hospitalized in pediatric wards in the Seine-Maritime department, which includes Rouen, Dieppe, Fécamp, Elbeuf, and Le Havre. Fifteen cases of Lyme disease were diagnosed between September 1988 and June 1997. The children (6 girls and 9 boys) were aged between 5 and 14 years old...

Symptoms and incidence of neuroborreliosis (NB) were studied in ambulatory patients visiting the ENT clinic in Helsinki. Especially we tried to search for possible markers indicating the connection between vestibular neuronitis and NB. A total of 350 patients were screened with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique for possible antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi (BB). Twelve patients had positive serological reactions for BB with sera titer levels ranging from 640-14700 (normal < 500)...
