Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor, mostly involving the minor salivary glands. Herein, we present a case of ACC in a 43-year-old man with symptoms of dental abscess as the initial presentation of the tumor. In spiral computed tomography (CT) scan, soft tissue mass with the erosion of maxillary sinus wall on the right side of the alveolar ridge was evident. Histopathological examination of the excised tumor with immunohistochemical studies (C-kit, Vimentin, pan-cytokeratin, p53, p63, and ki67 positive reaction) confirmed grade 2 ACC in the maxillary sinus...

BACKGROUND: Currently, limited literature exists about sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma (SNACC). In this study, we analyze the demographics, survival, and treatment efficacy of this rare entity. METHODS: Our study was a retrospective population-based analysis of SNACC in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database assessing the 40-year time-frame of 1973 to 2013. RESULTS: Six hundred ninety-four SNACC patients were identified; 53...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of endoscopic sinus surgery for sinonasal malignancy. METHOD: Clinical data of 40 cases of sinonasal malignancy treated in our hospital from January 2007 to December 2011 were retrospectively analyzed. The pathological types encountered were: 5 cases of malignant transformation of sinonasal inverted papilloma, 2 cases of maxillary sinus carcinoma, 3 cases of ethmoid sinus carcinoma, 11 cases of mucosal melanoma, 7 cases of olfactory neuroblastoma, 2 cases of neuroendocrine carcinoma, 4 cases of myoepithelial carcinoma, 3 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma, 1 case of malignant hemangiopericytoma...

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare tumor that commonly involves the salivary glands. EMC of the maxillary sinus is extremely rare. We describe here a case of a 50-year-old patient who presented with right cheek swelling for 7 years and bilateral nasal obstruction and right nasal bleeding for 3 months. A pinkish polypoidal mass was seen in the right nasal cavity. Computed tomography scan revealed an expansile soft tissue mass in the right maxillary sinus with erosion of all of its walls. Histopathological examination of the excised specimen confirmed myoepithelial carcinoma with positive reaction to S-100 and smooth muscle actin...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of nodal involvement and its prognostic value in malignant tumors of the paranasal sinuses, particularly in maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma. DESIGN: Retrospective review. SETTING: Tertiary cancer center. PATIENTS: The medical records of 704 consecutive patients surgically treated for malignant tumors of the paranasal sinuses from January 1968 to March 2003 were reviewed. The tumors were staged according to American Joint Committee on Cancer-International Union Against Cancer 2002 classification...

The expression of neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) was analyzed in immunohistochemical preparations from adenoid cystic carcinoma. The goal was to evaluate whether NCAM expression could be used as a biological marker for the perineural invasion of adenoid cystic carcinoma in the head and neck. The presence of perineural invasion and NCAM expression was evaluated in samples from 49 patients. Perineural invasion was identified in 33 of them (67%). A high incidence of perineural invasion was found in adenoid cystic carcinoma in the parotid, hard palate, maxillary sinus and oral cavity...
