Allergic rhinitis (AR) is the most common undiagnosed chronic condition in children. Moderate/severe AR symptoms significantly impair quality of life, and cause sleep disruption, absenteeism and decreased productivity. Additionally, untreated AR predisposes children to asthma and other chronic conditions. Although intranasal corticosteroids are the most effective pharmacologic treatment for AR, oral antihistamines are often preferred. First-generation antihistamines may be chosen to relieve AR symptoms as they are inexpensive and widely available; however, they cause sedative and cardiovascular negative effects due to poor receptor selectivity...

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis is a chronic allergic conjunctivitis with corneal involvement that affects children and adolescents. Its pathogenic mechanisms are not entirely clear, but IgE and other inflammatory mediators are involved. An 8-year-old boy with vernal keratoconjunctivitis not responding to conventional treatment started immunotherapy with good results, decreasing the topical steroid dependence. Conventional vernal keratoconjunctivitis treatment involves topical antihistamines and steroids. These are not always effective and steroids can be associated with severe ocular complications in the long term...

BACKGROUND: Data on the sensitization pattern and clinical characteristics of pediatric vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) are scary in Central Africa. This chronic form of allergic conjunctivitis affects the quality of school life and work productivity. There is no study that shows the breadth of vernal keratoconjunctivitis in our setting. PURPOSE: To describe the clinical characteristics of vernal keratoconjunctivitis in Kinshasa, to evaluate the sensitization profile and associated factors...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Allergic rhinoconjunctivitis is one of the most common ocular surface allergic inflammatory conditions seen in primary care that impacts patient's quality of life. Allergic conjunctivitis is increasingly being recognized as its own symptom complex that negatively impacts patient's quality of life separate from allergic rhinitis. This article reviews the psychosocial impact of ocular surface allergic inflammatory disorders (namely seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, ocular allergy, perennial allergic conjunctivitis, and atopic keratoconjunctivitis) on adult and pediatric populations...

Importance: Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is one of the most common allergic diseases and is especially problematic in children and adolescents. The course of AC is generally prolonged and often recurs. Understanding the health-related quality of life (QOL) of both children with AC and their parents would be useful. Objective: To evaluate the association between AC and health-related QOL in children and their parents. Design, Setting, and Participants: A prospective case-control study was conducted at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, a single tertiary referral center, from November 16, 2019, through January 20, 2020...

The role of diet and its manipulation in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is gradually acquiring central stage. Certain dietary factors have been identified as putative triggers in IBD as some other factors are found to be protective. The dietary manipulation as part of comprehensive IBD care should be done by the clinician in conjunction with a skilled dietitian. Nutritional deficiencies are common in patients with IBD and can have long-term effects on disease course and quality of life in these patients...

PURPOSE: Congenital sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (CSID) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a deficiency of the sucrase-isomaltase (SI) enzyme complex within the brush border membrane of the small intestine. Mutations in the SI gene result in abnormal synthesis and/or incorrect transport of the SI enzyme. Patients with CSID generally have reduced sucrase activity, but levels of isomaltase activity range from absent to almost normal. This study sought to better understand the experience of patients with CSID prior to, during, and after their diagnosis and its subsequent treatment with sacrosidase...

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin disease. Poorly controlled AD can lead to reduced quality of life (QoL) and psychosocial impairment. Dupilumab is the first approved monoclonal antibody targeting type 2 inflammation, for adolescent and adult patients with moderate-to-severe AD. We performed a retrospective analysis of the efficacy and safety of dupilumab in a cohort of Asian children and adolescents with moderate-to-severe AD. Clinical response was documented with investigator global assessment (IGA) and eczema area and severity index (EASI) scores...

BACKGROUND: We studied clinical efficacy and safety of pediatric sublingual immunotherapy of cedar pollinosis in the first follow-up year, compared with adult cases or untreated cases. METHODS: We compared 103 pediatrics under 15 yeas old (age, 10.8±2.6 years; male-to-female ratio, 68;35) and 89 adults (age, 38.9±12.5 years; male-to-female ratio, 34;55) treated with Cidarcure® , and untreated 299 patients (age, 31.3±16.0; male-to-female ratio, 144;155). Drug-resistant focal epilepsy (DRFE) in children can impair cognition and behavior, and lead to premature death. Increased pediatric epilepsy surgery numbers reflect the improvements in seizure control and long-term developmental outcomes. Yet, many children with DRFE are not candidates for surgical resection due to overlap of the seizure network with eloquent cortex or multiple seizure-onset zones, making surgery dangerous or ineffective. In adults, responsive neurostimulation (RNS System) therapy is safe and effective treatment for DRFE with one or two seizure foci, especially when the seizure focus is in eloquent cortex...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The rising global burden of allergic diseases, particularly in the pediatric population, is of serious concern. Ocular allergy is one of the most common ocular pathologies met in clinical practice. A large proportion of children and adolescents suffer from allergic eye diseases (AEDs), which affect their quality of life. The available treatments and surgical modalities have their limitations and side effects. Therefore, the development of novel and alternate strategies is the need of the hour and requires a timely review of currently available knowledge...

Brain growth and development occur at peak rates in early childhood through adolescence, and for some children, this must happen in conjunction with chronic kidney disease (CKD), associated medical conditions, and their treatment(s). This review provides an overview of key findings to date on the topic of the brain in pediatric CKD. Here, we specifically address the topics of neuroimaging and cognition in pediatric CKD with consideration to biomarkers of disease progression that may impact cognition. Current cognitive data suggest that most children with mild to moderate CKD do not exhibit significant cognitive impairments, but, rather, the presence of somewhat lower intellectual abilities and subtle deficits in selected executive functions...
