BACKGROUND/AIMS: The study aimed to assess whether the use of intrapartum transperineal ultrasound (US) can reduce the rate of failed vacuum extraction (VE). METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study including all women delivering at term with the diagnosis of protracted second stage of labor. The mode of delivery and rate of failed VE were compared between women who underwent a US examination prior to the decision on obstetrical interventions ("+US" group) and those in whom clinical decisions were based upon digital assessment only ("no-US" group)...

: Osteoporosis is a common disease with a strong genetic component. Several studies have reported the vitamin D receptor (VDR), collagen type I (COL1A1), and LDL receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) genes as the most likely candidates. However, most of the studies have been carried out in postmenopausal women and older men and show inconsistent results. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 26-year old male who presented with severe back pain of acute onset, unrelated to any kind of trauma, and diffuse myalgia...

In this work, a simple hydrothermal route for the synthesis of fluorescent nitrogen doped carbon dots (N-CDs) is reported. The Hylocereus undatus (H. undatus) extract and aqueous ammonia are used as carbon and nitrogen source, respectively. The optical properties of synthesized N-CDs are analyzed using UV-Visible (UV-Vis) and fluorescence spectroscopy. The surface morphology, elemental composition, crystallinity and functional groups present in the N-CDs are examined using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, respectively...

BACKGROUND: Second generations antipsychotics (SGA) are frequently used for maintenance treatment in bipolar disorder. We systematically reviewed the efficacy and long-term effects of treatment with SGA, regardless of treatment strategy (SGA administered either as monotherapy or as adjunctive therapy), in comparison to placebo, lithium or valproate. Primary outcomes were relapses (mood episode recurrence) and discontinuation. METHOD: Clinical studies were identified through database searching in PubMed, Embase, PsychInfo and Cochrane Library and critically appraised based on the Cochrane Handbook...

BACKGROUND: Very sensitive measurements of serum estrogens and testosterone are important in adult and pediatric endocrinology and immunoassays are known to lack the required performance at very low levels. Our aim was to develop a sensitive HPLC-MS/MS assay for both estradiol (E2) and testosterone (Te) in serum without the need for chemical derivatization and using commercially available calibrators. METHODS: Serum samples were prepared by the addition of internal standards followed by extraction using hexane:ethyl acetate...

: Population-level analysis of dietary influences on nutritional status is challenging in part due to limitations in dietary intake data. Household expenditure surveys, covering recent household expenditures and including key food groups, are routinely conducted in low- and middle-income countries. These data may help identify patterns of food expenditure that relate to child growth. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the relationship between household food expenditures and child growth using factor analysis...

PURPOSE: Intraoral traumatic herniation of the buccal fat pad has been reported using various terms such as traumatic pseudolipoma, traumatic prolapse of buccal fat pad, and traumatic avulsion of buccal fat pad. Because there is no uniformity in nomenclature, this condition needs to be distinguished from other entities such as post-traumatic pseudolipoma and lipoma and pseudoherniation of the buccal fat pad. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review and thorough search of the literature was planned in online databases such as PubMed, Medline, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar...

By rapidly creating libraries of thousands of unique, miniaturized reactors, droplet microfluidics provides a powerful method for automating high-throughput chemical analysis. In order to engineer in-droplet assays, microfluidic devices must add reagents into droplets, remove fluid from droplets, and perform other necessary operations, each typically provided by a unique, specialized geometry. Unfortunately, modifying device performance or changing operations usually requires re-engineering the device among these specialized geometries, a time-consuming and costly process when optimizing in-droplet assays...

At small food processing facilities, the most frequently used test to determine if grain-derived mycotoxin concentrations are compliant with legal limits is the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Each kit is designed to detect one of the six dangerous mycotoxins. With the increasing occurrence of coinfection of grain with multiple-mycotoxins in the field and/or during storage, ELISA is no longer a cost effective best assay option. With ELISA, each species of mycotoxin requires different sample preparation/extraction and a 45 min incubation...

Most studies on magnitude representation have focused on the visual modality with no possibility of disentangling the influence of visuo-spatial skills and short-term memory (STM) abilities on quantification processes. This study examines this issue in patients with Turner syndrome (TS), a genetic condition characterized by a specific cognitive profile frequently associating poor mathematical achievement, low spatial skills and reduced STM abilities. In order to identify the influence of visuo-spatial and STM processing on numerical magnitude abilities, twenty female participants with TS and twenty control female participants matched for verbal IQ and education level were administered a series of magnitude comparison tasks...
