BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify the long-term durability of the Kerboull-type reinforcement device (KT plate) in acetabular reconstruction for massive bone defects, assessing the remodeling of structural bone grafts. METHODS: This study retrospectively evaluated 106 hips that underwent acetabular reconstruction using a KT plate between November 2000 and December 2010. Thirty-eight primary total hip arthoplasties (THAs) and 68 revised THAs were performed, and the mean duration of clinical follow-up was 8 years (5-14 years)...

BACKGROUND: Postural stability is of great importance because imbalances and muscle weakness are significant risk factors for falls experienced by the elderly. Hip arthrosis, which causes pain and gait disorders that affect balance control, is common in the ageing population. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess postural stability in patients with unilateral hip arthrosis before total hip arthroplasty. METHODS: The study population consisted of 52 patients with hip arthrosis (study group) and 47 subjects with no history of clinical symptoms of hip pain...

OBJECTIVE: This study compared three methods of surgical wound dressing in patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty to determine their effect on wound leakage. METHOD: Total hip arthroplasties were randomised to 3 groups: 2-octyl cyanoacrylate (Dermabond-Ethicon Inc, G) with Opsite (Smith & Nephew; O) [G+O], 2-octyl cyanoacrylate with Tegaderm (3M; T) [G+T], and Opsite without 2-octyl cyanoacrylate [O]. Postoperative wound leakage was assessed and graded daily until discharge, the frequency of the dressing changes was also recorded...

In this retrospective observational cohort study, we describe 17 patients out of 1775 treated for various fractures who developed mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection after surgery. The cohort comprised 15 men and two women with a mean age of 40 years (24 to 70). A total of ten fractures were open and seven were closed. Of these, seven patients underwent intramedullary nailing of a fracture of the long bone, seven had fractures fixed with plates, two with Kirschner-wires and screws, and one had a hemiarthroplasty of the hip with an Austin Moore prosthesis...

Metallosis is serious condition that comes about when metallic debris builds up in the soft tissues of the body. This condition is seen in individuals undergoing joint replacement surgery, like those of the hip, knee and elbow. Incidence of metallosis is not common. Here we present a case of 61 year-old male, who had undergone right-sided total hip replacement 20 years earlier due to avascular necrosis. He presented to us with one-year history of massive swelling of right thigh and mild pain and discomfort in September 2013...

Large-head metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasties were introduced because of their purported advantages. Inflammatory pseudotumours occasionally occur after MoM hip arthroplasty and often lead to revision. The purpose of this study was to assess the outcome of revision of large-head MoM total hip arthroplasties after an extensive screening protocol for all MoM articulations with a minimum 2 year follow-up. We identified 50 hips that had undergone large-head MoM total hip arthoplasty and required revision at a mean of 44 months after index operation...

INTRODUCTION: Adverse reaction to metal debris (ARMD) can be caused by metal-on-metal total hip arthoplasty. We treated a case of ARMD in a 61-year-old patient by limited prosthetic revision, replacing the metal head with a polyethylene one. PRESENTATION OF CASE: Two years after metal-on-metal total arthoplasty of the left hip, radiographic control showed osteolysis of the patient's greater trochanter. He underwent surgical curettage and the application of demineralized bone matrix...

BACKGROUND: The survivorship of implants after revision total hip arthroplasty and risk factors associated with re-revision are not well defined. The purpose of this study was to determine patient, implant, and surgeon factors associated with re-revision total hip arthroplasty. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted. BACKGROUND/AIM: Infection following total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthoplasty (TKA) may have devastating consequences. Some bacterial strains are often encountered as agents of these infections, others occur less frequently but are sometimes burdened with more severe complications. INTRODUCTION: Early ceramic bearing systems in total hip arthoplasty (THA) sought to provide long term wear improvement over traditional metal on polyethylene systems. However, previous designs exhibited fractures of the ceramic acetabular liner, leading to the development of the Implex Hedrocel ceramic bearing THA system where the ceramic liner was supported on a layer of polyethylene intended to transition liner loads to the metal shell, a so-called "sandwich" design. Unfortunately, the device trial was stopped to further enrollment when liner fractures were reported...

BACKGROUND: Metal-on-metal (MOM) total hip arthroplasties were reintroduced because of the problems with osteolysis and aseptic loosening related to polyethylene wear of early metal-on-polyethylene (MOP) arthroplasties. The volumetric wear rate has been greatly reduced with MOM arthroplasties; however, because of nano-size wear particles, the absolute number has been greatly increased. Thus, a source of metal ion exposure with the potential to sensitize patients is present. We hypothesized that higher amounts of wear particles result in increased release of metal ions and ultimately lead to an increased incidence of metal allergy...

In comparison with standard surgical techniques robotic-assisted surgery has the advantages of increased surgical accuracy, reproducibility, optimization of component position, and improved patient outcomes in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) and total hip arthoplasty (THA) procedures. The MAKO Tactile Guidance System (TGS; MAKO Surgical Corp, Fort Lauderdale, FL) facilitates robotic-assisted arthroplasty procedures currently implemented in many operating rooms. The benefits of this technology are evident, but have not been shown to improve patient outcomes and justify the added financial burden imposed...

Retained intramedullary femoral nails can pose a problem for the implantation of the femoral component during total hip arthoplasty (THA) and they must often be removed. A patient with a retained Küntscher femoral nail implanted 47 years previously presented in our outpatient clinic for a THA. Since removal of the nail was impossible without severe damage to the femur, we chose to perform an extended trochanteric osteotomy, to cut the proximal part of the nail and to implant a cemented short stem with its tip in the hollow end of the nail...

Patients from seven randomized controlled trials of the effect of thromboprophylaxis on development of early thromboembolic complications after total hip arthroplasty were included in a follow-up analysis with death as the end-point. Total hip arthroplasty in patients with previous above knee amputations is rare. We present a unique case where the patient had only 130 mm of proximal femur remaining following a previous traumatic above knee amputation. The short segment of femur meaning a conventional femoral stem could not be used. We describe the technique of total hip arthoplasty for this patient using a mini hip prosthesis and report a successful clinical and radiological outcome at 2 years post-op.

Encouraged by the success of dual-mobility sockets in achieving implant stability in primary hip replacement, surgeons have started to use the implant in revision hip arthroplasty. However, very little is known yet about the postoperative complication rate of this type of implant when fixation in a reinforcement ring is required. In our department, 37 dual-mobility sockets were cemented in a reinforcement ring for revision hip arthroplasty in 36 patients over a period of two years. The mean follow-up period was 16 months (range, 6-27 months)...
