Background The increasing production, distribution, promotion, and availability of substances contemporaneous with the changing values of society have resulted in rising substance abuse as an emerging public health concern in India. A prevalence of 32-37% has been reported for substance abuse in various studies conducted in Uttarakhand but there is a dearth of data on socio-epidemiological factors affecting substance abuse. Materials & methods A facility-based observational cross-sectional study was conducted in selected de-addiction and rehabilitation centers of district Dehradun...

PURPOSE: To report rates of preoperative and postoperative opioid use between male and female patients and to identify risk factors for extended opioid use following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). METHODS: Patients undergoing ACLR between 2011 and 2018 were identified from the PearlDiver database. The opioid refill rates for males vs females were compared at monthly intervals for 1 year after ACLR. Patients who filled an opioid prescription <3 months before surgery were classified as opioid users, while those who had never filled one were classified as nonopioid users...

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine use is a major social and health issue in the Philippines. Former president Rodrigo Duterte prioritized combating illicit drugs, and the government launched an anti-drug campaign. People with substance use disorders (SUD) receive treatment and care in the community or residential treatment at Treatment and Rehabilitation Centers (TRCs) established by the Department of Health. However, since the content and quality of service are not sufficient, there is an urgent need for improvement...

INTRODUCTION: Prison-based drug and alcohol group treatment programs operate in all Australian jurisdictions. With more than two-thirds of people in prison having a history of substance use prior to incarceration, such programs are needed. There have been few published papers on the impact of attending group treatment programs in Australian prisons, and the research published to date has been predominately quantitative. We aim to report the experiences of males in prison who completed and those who did not complete a group-based drug and alcohol program, to gain insight into their strategies for reducing harm from drug and alcohol post-release...

Limited research has been conducted on the experiences of individuals in long-term recovery from addiction, and addictions are usually studied in isolation. However, no theories of addiction differentiate between addictions or assume that individuals will experience only one addiction. This study aimed to compare affect between individuals with addictions to drugs and alcohol and to explore how QoL changes in long-term recovery from addiction. Individuals in recovery from addiction ( n = 115; 52.2% male) were recruited via snowball sampling on social media signposted by an addiction rehabilitation charity...

Many patients with tuberculosis (TB) have comorbidities, risk determinants and disability that co-exist at diagnosis, during and after TB treatment. We conducted an observational cohort study in 11 health facilities in China to assess under routine program conditions (i) the burden of these problems at the start and end of TB treatment and (ii) whether referral mechanisms for further care were functional. There were 603 patients registered with drug-susceptible TB who started TB treatment: 84% were symptomatic, 14% had diabetes, 14% had high blood pressure, 19% smoked cigarettes, 10% drank excess alcohol and in 45% the 6 min walking test (6MWT) was abnormal...

Despite efforts to reduce barriers to HCV testing and treatment, follow-up remains a major issue. This study examines the biopsychosocial predictors of drug use and dependence among Filipino drug users enrolled in community-based drug rehabilitation. Data from 925 clients revealed that the severity of drug use, cigarette and alcohol use, recovery skills, and mental health problems predict drug dependence. Family support, life skills, and psychological well-being are indirect predictors of severity of use. Results also revealed differences in predictors by sex, level of use, and type of clients. These findings highlight the importance of a client-centered approach to treatment and suggest what might be critical elements in a community-based drug rehabilitation program in the Philippines...
