In this study, we developed an ingenious yet effective strategy for cysteine detection. The colorimetric cysteine assay is established through an indicator displacement process, where Cu(2+) and pyrocatechol violet (PV) was employed as receptor and indicator, respectively. Proof-of-concept trials demonstrated that the stronger binding affinity of Cu(2+) receptor toward cysteine than PV indicator endowed our colorimetric sensor with high selectivity and excellent sensitivity as well as with a lower detection limit (4...

The feasibility of employing Microbial Electrochemical Technology (MET)-driven electro-Fenton oxidation was evaluated as a post-treatment of an anammox system treating sanitary landfill leachate. Two different MET configuration systems were operated using effluent from partial nitrification-anammox reactor treating mature leachate. In spite of the low organic matter biodegradability of the anammox's effluent (2401±562mgCODL(-1); 237±57mgBOD5L(-1)), the technology was capable to reach COD removal rates of 1077-1244mgL(-1)d(-1) with concomitant renewable electricity production (43...

Cisplatin (CP) is a potent and widely used chemotherapeutic agent. However, the clinical benefits of CP are compromised because it elicits nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. In this study, we investigated the nephroprotective effects of the phytochemical genipin (GP) isolated from the gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) fruit, using a murine model of CP-induced nephropathy. GP pretreatment attenuated the CP-induced renal tissue injury by diminishing the serum blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and cystatin C levels, as well as those of kidney injury molecule-1...

Cell targeting peptides (CTP) are small peptides which have high affinity and specificity to a cell or tissue targets. They are typically identified by using phage display and chemical synthetic peptide library methods. CTPs have attracted considerable attention as a new class of ligands to delivery specifically therapeutic and diagnostic agents, because of the fact they have several advantages including easy synthesis, smaller physical sizes, lower immunogenicity and cytotoxicity and their simple and better conjugation to nano-carriers and therapeutic or diagnostic agents compared to conventional antibodies...

BACKGROUND: Late-onset preeclampsia is the most prevalent phenotype of this syndrome; nevertheless, only a few biomarkers for its early diagnosis have been reported. We sought to correct this deficiency using a high through-put proteomic platform. METHODS: A case-control longitudinal study was conducted, including 90 patients with normal pregnancies and 76 patients with late-onset preeclampsia (diagnosed at ≥34 weeks of gestation). Maternal plasma samples were collected throughout gestation (normal pregnancy: 2-6 samples per patient, median of 2; late-onset preeclampsia: 2-6, median of 5)...

Histone H2B is an autoantigen that appears in circulation due to altered apoptosis/or insufficient clearance and is likely to be involved in the induction and progression of autoimmune diseases since modified-H2B is immunogenic. Our studies demonstrate that tyrosines of H2B histone spontaneously converts to free and nitrotyrosine bound protein in vivo. Commercially available H2B histone was modified with peroxynitrite in vitro. Modified H2B was found to be more immunogenic than native form in experimental animals...

Spirorchiids (family Spirorchiidae Stunkard 1921) are a group of flukes that inhabit the circulatory system of turtles. Infection by members of the family Spirorchiidae involves egg deposition in the host blood stream, accumulation in tissues, which cause inflammatory reactions and embolisms, leading or contributing to the death of the host. Reports of Spirorchiids eggs lesions on loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta Linnaeus, 1758) were observed only in the USA hosts. In the present report a female loggerhead sea turtle was found dead on the beach in north State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil...

<ce:para>The Ottawa Charter constitutes a major turning point in the world’s vision of health, resources and the strategies to be implemented in order to respond to the populations expectations in this field. However, these expectations are no longer limited to the conventional biomedical concept of health, strongly care-oriented and focused on diseases. They currently integrate prevention of diseases and health promotion. Five main strategic actions have been identified to achieve these goals: 1) elaboration of public health policies; 2) creation of supportive environments; 3) strengthening of community actions; 4) development of individual skills; and 5) reorientation of health services...

Five simple, sensitive, and eco-friendly LC and UV spectrophotometric methods have been developed for the simultaneous determination of phenylephrine hydrochloride (PHE) and prednisolone acetate (PRD) in their combined dosage form. The first method was reversed-phase (RP) LC using methanol–water–heptane-1-sulfonic acid sodium salt (75 + 25 + 0.1, v/v/w) as a mobile phase. Separation was achieved using an XSelect HSS reversed-phase C18 analytical column (250 × 4.6 mm, 5µm). The flow rate was 1...

Endophytes represent a hidden world within plants. Almost all plants that are studied harbor one or more endophytes, which help their host to survive against pathogens and changing adverse environmental conditions. Fungal and bacterial endophytes with distinct ecological niches show important biological activities and ecological functions. Their unique physiological and biochemical characteristics lead to the production of niche specific secondary metabolites that may have pharmacological potential. Identification of specific secondary metabolites in adverse environment can also help us in understanding mechanisms of host tolerance against stress condition such as biological invasions, salt, drought, temperature...

Access to health care is still limited for many women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), while it remains an important determinant of maternal mortality and morbidity. Information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as mhealth and telehealth, can help to facilitate this access by acting on the various obstacles encountered by women, be they socio-cultural, economic, geographical or organizational. However, various factors contribute to the success of mhealth and telehealth implementation and use, and must be considered for these technologies to go beyond the pilot project stage...

A novel full-inversion-based technique for quantitative ultrasound elastography was investigated in a pilot clinical study on five patients for non-invasive detection and localization of prostate cancer and quantification of its extent. Conventional-frequency ultrasound images and radiofrequency (RF) data (~5 MHz) were collected during mechanical stimulation of the prostate using a transrectal ultrasound probe. Pre and post-compression RF data were used to construct the strain images. The Young's modulus (YM) images were subsequently reconstructed using the derived strain images and the stress distribution estimated iteratively using finite element (FE) analysis...
