Retinoic acid (RA) plays important roles in development, growth, and homeostasis through regulation of the nuclear receptors for RA (RARs). Herein, we identify Hypermethylated in Cancer 1 (Hic1) as an RA-inducible gene. HIC1 encodes a tumor suppressor, which is often silenced by promoter hypermethylation in cancer. Treatment of cells with an RAR agonist causes a rapid recruitment of an RAR/RXR complex consisting of TDG, the lysine acetyltransferase CBP, and TET 1/2 to the Hic1 promoter. Complex binding coincides with a transient accumulation of 5fC/5caC and concomitant upregulation of Hic1 expression, both of which are TDG dependent...

Arianna D'Angelo, Nazar N Amso, Rudaina Hassan
BACKGROUND: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is an iatrogenic and potentially life threatening condition resulting from excessive ovarian stimulation. Reported incidence of moderate to severe OHSS ranges from 0.6% to 5% of in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles. The factors contributing to OHSS have not been completely explained. The release of vasoactive substances secreted by the ovaries under human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) stimulation may play a key role in triggering this syndrome...

The workfunction is an important parameter that governs several electronic phenomena occurring at the surfaces and interfaces of materials. Here, we study MXenes, which are two dimensional metal carbides and nitrides. The workfunction is strongly dependent on the terminating functional groups which induce surface dipoles and Fermi level shifts. Here, we establish a correlation between the workfunction and the adsorbate's 2p band centres. Focusing on the OH terminated MXenes which have intrinsically low workfunctions, we show that a rigid relation between the 2p band centres and workfunctions exists which resembles a volcano plot...

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress produces molecular modifications of serum albumin that disturb its biological functions and interfere with its detection by the bromocresol green assay (BCG). Oxidative stress, inflammation, and hypoalbuminemia are common peritoneal dialysis (PD). This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum albumin, oxidized serum albumin (OSA), oncotic pressure, and blood pressure in hypoalbuminemic PD patients. METHODS: Twenty-four PD patients with serum albumin levels <3...

Modified supersaturated phosphate buffer solutions were used to synthesize phosphate-based spheres, including calcium phosphate (CaP), strontium phosphate (SrP) and barium phosphate (BaP). A series of ions concentrations in the modified phosphate buffer solutions were investigated in order to study their effects in precipitates morphologies. During synthesis, it was found that magnesium was the key factor in sphere formation. The morphologies of calcium phosphate, strontium phosphate and barium phosphate precipitates varied as the concentration of magnesium ions varied...

INTRODUCTION: Paraphenylene diamine (PPD) ingestion is manifesting as one of the more common ways of committing suicide in Southern Punjab, Pakistan, especially Bahawalpur. PPD is an ingredient of a compound commonly known "Kala Pathar" which means "Black Stone" in Urdu. It is readily available in the market at low cost and is used to dye hair and fur. Its intoxication inhibits cellular oxidation and affects the muscles causing rhabdomyolysis. This leads to myoglobinuria followed by renal failure and edema of face and throat resulting in respiratory difficulty...

Although myxoid liposarcomas (MLS) are the most common type of soft-tissue sarcomas in adults, their primary location in the superficial tissues is rare. So sarcomas are classified as superficial and deep-seated. They are distinct based on their location and their frequency as well as their prognosis which is relatively better in superficial sarcomas. We here report the case of a patient with subcutaneous liposarcoma in the right thigh. The diagnosis was confirmed by histology after clinical symptoms had evolved over 1 year...

BACKGROUND: The imaging assessment of paraspinal muscle morphology and fatty infiltration has gained considerable attention in the past decades, with reports suggesting an association between muscle degenerative changes and low back pain (LBP). To date, qualitative and quantitative approaches have been used to assess paraspinal muscle composition. Though highly reliable, manual thresholding techniques are time consuming and not always feasible in a clinical setting. The tedious and rater-dependent nature of such manual thresholding techniques provides the impetus for the development of automated or semi-automated segmentation methods...

BACKGROUND: Serogroup A Neisseria meningitidis (NmA) was the cause of the 2011 meningitis epidemics in Chad. This bacterium, often carried asymptomatically, is considered to be an "accidental pathogen"; however, the transition from carriage to disease phenotype remains poorly understood. This study examined the role genetic diversity might play in this transition by comparing genomes from geographically and temporally matched invasive and carried NmA isolates. RESULTS: All 23 NmA isolates belonged to the ST-5 clonal complex (cc5)...

Systemic amyloidosis is a very rare complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The reported cases of secondary amyloidosis in children with IBD are much fewer than those reported in adults. Herein, a teenage boy with Crohn's disease is presented who developed nephrotic syndrome due to renal involvement secondary to amyloidosis, whereas the patient was under treatment with corticosteroid and 6-mercaptopurine. To our best knowledge, this is the first reported case of secondary amyloidosis in a teenage Iranian boy with Crohn's disease...

Gold nanorods (GNR) use has been proposed in medical applications because of their intrinsic photothermal properties. However, the presence of CTAB molecules adsorbed onto the surface of GNRs results in a highly cytotoxic GNR system. In this work we replace the CTAB molecules with a thiolated chitosan. Once chitosan coated GNRs (Chi-SH-GNR) were attained, a film of alginate (Alg-Chi-SH-GNR) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-Chi-SH-GNR) was deposited onto the surface of Chi-GNR by a layer-by-layer process. The photothermal conversion efficiency for the GNR systems was determined irradiating the GNRs suspended in aqua media with a CW 808nm diode laser (CNI, China)...

BACKGROUND: Some patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) are treated with methadone maintenance therapy (MMT). However, as with opioids, methadone has major side-effects; sexual dysfunction is a particularly distressing such effect. Rosa Damascena oil has been shown to reduce subjective sexual dysfunction in patients with major depressive disorders, but its influence on testosterone has not so far been tested. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of Rosa Damascena oil on sexual dysfunction and testosterone levels among male patients with OUD and undergoing MMT...
