This study evaluated the effects of differing circulating progesterone (P4) levels on the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge profile following treatment with gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) in B. indicus (Nelore, n = 13) and B. taurus (Holstein, n = 16) heifers. All heifers were synchronized with a hormonal protocol to induce either a Low or High circulating P4 environment at the time of GnRH treatment. Heifers were randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial design composed by two genetic groups (B. indicus and B...

Suicide remains a clear, present and increasing public health problem, despite being a potentially preventable tragedy. Its incidence is particularly high in people with overt or un(der)diagnosed psychiatric disorders. Objective and precise identification of individuals at risk, ways of monitoring response to treatments and novel preventive therapeutics need to be discovered, employed and widely deployed. We sought to investigate whether blood gene expression biomarkers for suicide (that is, a 'liquid biopsy' approach) can be identified that are more universal in nature, working across psychiatric diagnoses and genders, using larger cohorts than in previous studies...

Implantation of reporter-labeled tumor cells in an immunocompetent host involves a risk of their immune elimination. We have studied this effect in a mouse model of breast cancer after the orthotopic implantation of mammary gland adenocarcinoma 4T1 cells genetically labelled with luciferase (Luc). Mice were implanted with 4T1 cells and two derivative Luc-expressing clones 4T1luc2 and 4T1luc2D6 exhibiting equal in vitro growth rates. In vivo, the daughter 4T1luc2 clone exhibited nearly the same, and 4T1luc2D6, a lower growth rate than the parental cells...

Alzheimer's disease is connected to a number of other neurodegenerative conditions, known collectively as 'tauopathies', by the presence of aggregated tau protein in the brain. Neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in AD are associated with tau pathology and both the breakdown of axonal sheaths in white matter tracts and excess iron accumulation grey matter brain regions. Despite the identification of myelin and iron concentration as major sources of contrast in quantitative susceptibility maps of the brain, the sensitivity of this technique to tau pathology has yet to be explored...

The paper describes a case of eosinophilic granuloma of the parietal bone in a 32-year-old man. Histological examination revealed a large number of bean-shaped Langerhans cell histiocytes with lobed nuclei and nuclear grooves. The histiocytes alternated with the foci of obvious eosinophilic infiltration and with eosinophilic microabscesses. There were osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells, bone resorption, and numerous bone rods covered with osteoblast chains. The histiocytes expressed CD1α, langerin, CD68, S100, and p53 (in 90...

Characteristically identified as the main component of senile plaques present in patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease, Aβ has been detected in human testis and reproductive fluids, but its effect on spermatozoa has not been addressed. The present study evaluated whether the most toxic and aggregant amyloid precursor protein (APP)-proteolytic product, amyloid-β1-42 (Aβ1-42), was capable of affecting sperm functionality. Normozoospermic samples were either exposed to different Aβ1-42 doses or to the untreated and scrambled controls for a maximum of 48 h at 37 °C and 5%CO2, and motility, viability and mitochondrial status were evaluated...

AIM: To identify a parameter predicting a collection of at least 2·106 CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells (HSC)/kg body weight per leukapheresis (LA) procedure. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The investigation included 189 patients with hematological malignancies and 3 HSC donors, who underwent mobilization of stem cells with their subsequent collection by LA. Absolute numbers of peripheral blood leukocytes and CD34+ cells before a LA procedure, as well as a number of CD34+ cells/kg body weight (BW) in the LA product stored on the same day were determined in each patient (donor)...

Effective control and monitoring of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) relies upon rapid and accurate disease confirmation. Currently, clinical samples are usually tested in reference laboratories using standardized assays recommended by The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). However, the requirements for prompt and serotype-specific diagnosis during FMD outbreaks, and the need to establish robust laboratory testing capacity in FMD-endemic countries have motivated the development of simple diagnostic platforms to support local decision-making...

MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 40 senior volunteers from the Tzu Chi Foundation and other organizations in Hualien in 2014-2015. We conducted in-person interviews to collect information on demographic features, physical fitness, dietary habits, comorbidities, and narratives of aging. Vascular risks including blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), serum glucose level, and lipid profile were examined...

BACKGROUND: Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa zea are major caterpillar pests of Old and New World agriculture, respectively. Both, particularly H. armigera, are extremely polyphagous, and H. armigera has developed resistance to many insecticides. Here we use comparative genomics, transcriptomics and resequencing to elucidate the genetic basis for their properties as pests. RESULTS: We find that, prior to their divergence about 1.5 Mya, the H. armigera/H. zea lineage had accumulated up to more than 100 more members of specific detoxification and digestion gene families and more than 100 extra gustatory receptor genes, compared to other lepidopterans with narrower host ranges...

A novel type of supramolecular aggregate, named a "nanosponge" was synthesized through the interaction of novel supramolecular building blocks with trigonal geometry. The cholesterol-(K/D)nDEVDGC)3-trimaleimide unit consists of a trigonal maleimide linker to which homopeptides (either K or D) of variable lengths (n=5, 10, 15, 20) and a consensus sequence for executioner caspases (DEVDGC) are added via Michael addition. Upon mixing in aqueous buffer cholesterol-(K)nDEVDGC)3-trimaleimides and a 1:1 mixture of cholesterol-(K/D)nDEVDGC)3-trimaleimides form stable nanosponges, whereas cholesterol-(D)nDEVDGC)3-trimaleimide is unable to form supramolecular aggregates with itself...

Polymerization of benzoxazine resins is indicated by the disappearance of a 960-900 cm(-1) band in infrared spectroscopy (IR). Historically, this band was assigned to the C-H out-of-plane bending of the benzene to which the oxazine ring is attached. This study shows that this band is a mixture of the O-C2 stretching of the oxazine ring and the phenolic ring vibrational modes. Vibrational frequencies of 3-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[e][1,3]oxazine (PH-a) and 3-(tert-butyl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[e][1,3]oxazine (PH-t) are compared with isotope-exchanged and all-substituted compounds...

BACKGROUND: Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) have been associated with mildly inflammatory diarrhea in outbreaks and in travelers and have been increasingly recognized as enteric pathogens in young children with and without overt diarrhea. We examined the risk factors for EAEC infections and their associations with environmental enteropathy biomarkers and growth outcomes over the first two years of life in eight low-resource settings of the MAL-ED study.
