Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a generally fatal neurodegenerative disease of adults that produces weakness and atrophy due to dysfunction and death of upper and lower motor neurons. We used RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) to analyze expression of all mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded respiratory genes in ALS and CTL human cervical spinal cords (hCSC) and isolated motor neurons. We analyzed with RNA-seq mtDNA gene expression in human neural stem cells (hNSC) exposed to recombinant human mitochondrial transcription factor A (rhTFAM), visualized in 3-dimensions clustered gene networks activated by rhTFAM, quantitated their interactions with other genes and determined their gene ontology (GO) families...

This paper presents data on the nascence and development of the interventional cardiology service in Kazakhstan. It provides details of the structure of the Kazakhstan interventional cardiology service, staff training, the number of coronary and structural heart interventions for the period of 2010-2015, as well as the peculiarities of the capitation payment method. The number of coronary interventions is increasing year by year, though the number of intracoronary imaging techniques and intracoronary flow/pressure techniques remains inadequate...

The biocompatible silica precursor tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl)orthosilicate with ethylene glycol residues was used instead of the common alcohol-containing tetraethoxysilane for the first time to prepare a biorecognition element by entrapping the marine microalga Porphyridium purpureum into a silica matrix by a one-stage sol-gel procedure at conditions (pH, ionic strength, and temperature) appropriate for living cells. We show that the microalga immobilized in this way fully maintains its viability and functionality...

β-Adrenergic agonists (β-AA) are non-hormonal growth promoters which promote muscle hypertrophy in supplemented animals. The effects of two β-AA in combination with the immunocastration technique on the performance and carcass traits were evaluated using 96 feedlot Nellore males in a randomized complete block design with two sex conditions (immunocastrated (IC) v. non-castrated (NC)) and three treatments: CON (no β-agonists added), RH (300 mg of ractopamine hydrochloride/day, for 33 days) or ZH (80 mg of zilpaterol·hydrochloride animal/day for 30 days, removed 3 days for required withdrawal period)...

In a framework of the concept of organ interactions great attention has been paid during recent years to interaction of the heart and liver. The term cardio-hepatic syndrome (CHS) designates the combination of clinical-laboratory signs of liver dysfunction and acute or chronic cardiac pathology. In this article, we present mechanisms and characteristics of CHS in acute and chronic heart failure (HF), data of large clinical studies and registries on prevalence, associations, and prognostic significance of cardiogenic disturbances of liver function in patients with HF...

The implementation into clinical practice of new therapeutic strategies that could improve the prognosis of patients with heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) remains relevant. Innovative approach is to restore imbalances of neurohumoral systems by inhibiting angiotensin II receptor and neprilysin. The review presents the role of the natriuretic peptides system in the HFrEF pathophysiology, historical approaches to neurohormonal modulation, clinical pharmacology of the first in the class of angiotensin receptor and neprilysin inhibitor sakubitril/valsartan...

An IgM murine monoclonal antibody (MAb) was obtained against the excretory-secretory antigen (ES-Ag) of in vitro reared protoscoleces of Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch, 1786). Western blotting revealed that the MAb recognised a 20.6 kDa protein of this ES-Ag. The MAb was used in sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (s-ELISA) for selective sensitisation of the solid phase with the protoscolex-specific protein from its ES-Ag and somatic antigen (S-Ag) to examine serum samples of 108 cows from a cystic echinococcosis (CE) endemic area for specific antibodies and to compare the results with those from necropsies and an indirect ELISA (i-ELISA)...

γ-ray flash generation in near-critical-density target irradiated by four symmetrical colliding laser pulses is numerically investigated. With peak intensities about 10^{23} W/cm^{2}, the laser pulses boost electron energy through direct laser acceleration, while pushing them inward with the ponderomotive force. After backscattering with counterpropagating laser, the accelerated electron is trapped in the electromagnetic standing waves or the ponderomotive potential well created by the coherent overlapping of the laser pulses, and emits γ-ray photons in a multiple-laser-scattering regime, where electrons act as a medium transferring energy from the laser to γ rays in the ponderomotive potential valley...

Based on the combination of density functional theory and theory-group methods, we performed systematic modeling of γ-CuI structural design at the atomistic level. Being started from the metallic copper lattice, we treated a crystal assembly as a stepwise iodination process characterized in terms of a sequence of intermediate lattice geometries. These geometries were selected and validated via screening of possible structural transformations. The genesis of chemical bonding was studied for three structural transformations by analyzing the relevant changes in the topology of valence electron densities...

PK studies were carried out after a single i.v. administration of 500 and 1000 U/kg by measuring of MGL activity in plasma samples. L-methionine concentration was measured by mass spectrometry. After single i.v. injection of 500U/kg the circulating T1/2 of enzymes in mice varies from 73 to 123min. The AUC0-tinf values determined for MGL 500U/kg from C. freundii, C. tetani and C. sporogenes are 8.21±0.28, 9.04±0.33 and 13.88±0.39U/(ml×h), respectively. Comparison of PK parameters of three MGL sources in the dose of 500U/kg indicated the MGL C...

INTRODUCTION: Hesperidin (HES), as the most abundant flavonoid existing in the citrus, is widely used by human daily. The radio-protective effects of Hesperidin have been confirmed in various measurement systems. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Hesperidin on the changes in the apoptosis level and expression of apoptotic genes target (bax, bcl-2 and ration of bax/bcl-2) in the peripheral blood lymphocytes of male rats after gamma radiation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 64 male rats were divided into eight groups: Control, HES (100 mg/kg b...

BACKGROUND: There has been considerable interest in discovery of the genetic architecture of complex traits, particularly age-related neurodegenerative disorders. To predict disease risk and to understand its genetic basis in humans, it is necessary to study animal models. Our previous research on the accelerated-senescence OXYS strain has revealed two quantitative trait loci (QTLs) on rat chromosome 1 that are associated with early cataract and/or retinopathy as well as with behavioral abnormalities...

The dynamics of expression of two homologous genes Mi-1.1 and Mi-1.2 in the roots of resistant and susceptible tomato plants in non-invasion conditions and during invasion with the root-knot nematode M. incognita was studied. Nematode invasion was accompanied by a significant increase in the expression level of both genes; however, the accumulation of transcripts at the early stages of nematode invasion in the penetration of nematode juveniles to the roots was observed only in plants that contained the Mi-1...

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic intestinal disorder, often leading to an impaired quality of life in affected patients. The importance of environmental factors in the pathogenesis of IBD, including their disease-modifying potential, is increasingly recognised. Hypoxia seems to be an important driver of inflammation, as has been reported by our group and others. The aim of the study is to evaluate if hypoxia can alter disease activity of IBD measured by Harvey-Bradshaw Activity Index in Crohn's disease (increase to ≥5 points) and the partial Mayo Score for ulcerative colitis (increase to ≥2 points)...
