BACKGROUND: There has been considerable interest in discovery of the genetic architecture of complex traits, particularly age-related neurodegenerative disorders. To predict disease risk and to understand its genetic basis in humans, it is necessary to study animal models. Our previous research on the accelerated-senescence OXYS strain has revealed two quantitative trait loci (QTLs) on rat chromosome 1 that are associated with early cataract and/or retinopathy as well as with behavioral abnormalities...

The dynamics of expression of two homologous genes Mi-1.1 and Mi-1.2 in the roots of resistant and susceptible tomato plants in non-invasion conditions and during invasion with the root-knot nematode M. incognita was studied. Nematode invasion was accompanied by a significant increase in the expression level of both genes; however, the accumulation of transcripts at the early stages of nematode invasion in the penetration of nematode juveniles to the roots was observed only in plants that contained the Mi-1...

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic intestinal disorder, often leading to an impaired quality of life in affected patients. The importance of environmental factors in the pathogenesis of IBD, including their disease-modifying potential, is increasingly recognised. Hypoxia seems to be an important driver of inflammation, as has been reported by our group and others. The aim of the study is to evaluate if hypoxia can alter disease activity of IBD measured by Harvey-Bradshaw Activity Index in Crohn's disease (increase to ≥5 points) and the partial Mayo Score for ulcerative colitis (increase to ≥2 points)...

An indirect calorimetry trial examined energy metabolism, apparent nutrient digestibility, C retention (CR), and N retention (NR) of cattle supplemented with zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH). Beef steers ( = 20; 463 ± 14 kg) blocked ( = 5) by weight and source were individually fed and adapted to maintenance energy intake for 21 d before allotment to ZH (90 mg/steer∙d) or no β-adrenergic agonist treatment (control [CONT]) for 20 d (455 ± 14 kg at the start of treatment). Respiration chambers = 4 were used to quantify heat production (HP) during maintenance (d 12 to 16 of the ZH period) and fasting heat production (FHP; d 19 to 20 of ZH period; total 4 d of fast)...

We studied the possibility of using membrane fabricated from type 1 collagen isolated from cattle tissues (group 1) or porcine tissues (group 2) for replacement of the resected bladder wall defect in rabbits in order to retain functional volume of the organ. Satisfactory take of both types of collagen membranes with formation of competent anastomosis was observed. Histological studies revealed inflammatory process in the bladder wall at the site of contact with the implanted membrane (more pronounced in case of membranes from cattle tissues) that decreased by day 21 of the experiment...

Scalar particles S that are singlets under the standard model gauge group are generic features of many models of fundamental physics, in particular, as possible mediators to a hidden sector. We show that the decay S→Zh provides a powerful probe of the CP nature of the scalar, because it is allowed only if S has CP-odd interactions. We perform a model-independent analysis of this decay using an effective Lagrangian and compute the relevant Wilson coefficients arising from integrating out heavy fermions to one-loop order...

Earlier it has been shown that extracellular glutathione peroxidase (GPx3) from human plasma is able to use cysteine (Cys-SH) instead of glutathione (GSH) as a thiol substrate. In the present study, the ability of rat plasma to utilize not only GSH, but also Cys-SH and homocysteine (Hcy-SH), in the thiol peroxidase reaction has been confirmed. The molar ratio between thiol and H2O2 in the catalyzed reaction was 2:1. The specific activity increased with fractionation of proteins. At a fixed thiol concentration of 0...

We studied the effect of modified bioflavonoid and reference drug quercetin dihydrate on proliferation of mononuclears triggered by T- and B-cell mitogens. Lymphocytes were in vivo pretreated with the examined agents followed by their explantation and in vitro activation with T- and B-cell mitogens in cell culture. Intraperitoneal injection of modified bioflavonoid and quercetin dihydrate produced a dose-dependent inhibition of proliferation of the in vitroactivated splenocytes; modified bioflavonoid demonstrated higher antiproliferative activity...

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex multifactorial disease of the elderly, with unclear pathogenesis; AMD is the leading cause of blindness. One of the destructive processes in AMD is oxidative stress, which leads to an imbalance in the processes responsible for production and detoxification of reactive oxygen species. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) signaling pathway can participate in the development of oxidative stress, but the main regulator of antioxidant defense is nuclear factor, erythroid derived 2 (Nrf2)...

Secondary myeloid neoplasia may be a complication of intensive cytostatic therapy. The most common types of secondary neoplasias are acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. The development of secondary atypical chronic myeloid leukemia (aCML) is an extremely rare phenomenon. The paper describes transformation of secondary myelodysplastic syndrome to aCML 6 months after its diagnosis. The development of aCML was accompanied by additional chromosomal aberration as monosomy of chromosome 17. No mutations in the JAK2, MPL, and CalR genes were detected...

In this paper, the multipole expansion method is used to determine effective interaction potentials between particles in both classical dusty plasma and dense quantum plasma. In particular, formulas for interactions of dipole-dipole and charge-dipole pairs in a classical nondegenerate plasma as well as in degenerate quantum and semiclassical plasmas were derived. The potentials describe interactions between atoms, atoms and charged particles, dust particles in the complex plasma, atoms and electrons in the degenerate plasma, and metals...
