Deficits in the neuroendocrine-immune network in the periphery associated with the onset and progression of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) have not been extensively studied. The present study correlatively examines the association between cell-mediated immune responses, stress hormones, amyloid precursor protein (APP) expression, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and intracellular signaling molecules in the pathophysiology of MCI and AD compared to adults. Serum APP, lymphocyte proliferation, total cholinesterase (TChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activities, cytokines (IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-6, and TNF-α), and intracellular signaling molecules (p-ERK, p-CREB, and p-Akt) were measured in the PBMCs of adult, old, MCI, and AD men and women initially and after 3 years in the same population...

Colonic varices are a rare subtype of ectopic varices and form due to portal hypertension, splenic or portal vein thrombosis, and mesenteric vein obstruction. When present, they are most common in the rectum. We discuss a patient with hematochezia who had isolated right-sided colonic varices related to pancreatic cancer, which is rare. The mass involved the superior mesenteric vein, leading to left-sided portal hypertension and resultant varices. These are difficult to diagnosis because they flatten with insufflation on colonoscopy, so computed tomography or angiography is the gold standard...

Sarcopenia burdens the elderly population through loss of muscle energy and mass, yet treatments to functionally rescue both parameters are missing. The glucocorticoid prednisone remodels muscle metabolism based on frequency of intake, but its mechanisms in sarcopenia are unknown. We found that once-weekly intermittent prednisone rescued muscle quality in aged 24-month-old mice to levels comparable to young 4-month-old mice. We discovered an age- and sex-independent glucocorticoid receptor transactivation program in muscle encompassing PGC1alpha and its co-factor Lipin1...

Leishmania donovani, a protozoan parasite, resides and replicates in macrophages and inflicts the potentially fatal disease visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The parasite-expressed surface lipophosphoglycan (LPG) was implicated in binding TLR2 on NK cells, but the modus operandi of its disease-promoting influence remained unknown. As TPL2, a member of the MAPK module in mammalian macrophages, was implicated in the anti-inflammatory immune response and promoting pathogen survival, we investigated the possibility of TPL2-directed LPG-TLR2 signalling in Leishmania infection...

Cholestatic pruritus is a debilitating symptom associated with many liver diseases and is often refractory to medical management. Nasobiliary drainage is a relatively safe and effective method for treating intractable cholestatic pruritus. It should be considered for patients with refractory cholestatic pruritus who have failed or have contraindications to medical therapy as a predictor of response before surgical fistula creation.

INTRODUCTION: The performance of an oxygenator, as found in literature, is evaluated according to protocols that define standard values of the gas content in the inlet blood. However, when dealing with simulations of lung insufficiency, a more extensive evaluation is needed. This work aims to investigate and assess the gas exchange performance of an oxygenator for different input values of gas content in blood. METHODS: Three commercially available oxygenators with different membrane surfaces were investigated in a mock loop for three blood flow rates (0...

The green approach-based nanoparticle synthesis is considered a more cost-effective and ecologically responsible method of producing nanoparticles than other standard techniques. A major accomplishment in resolving these issues is the use of nanoparticles for environmental pollution remediation. This article describes a simple method for producing MgO and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) using aqueous extracts of Zingiber officinale and Glycyrrhiza roots as the stabilizing and reducing agents, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersed X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy methods were used to characterize the biologically synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles (MO NPs)...
