OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of the combined approach of preoperative endovascular embolization (EE) and surgical excision (SE) for scalp arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and present an illustrative case report. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using online databases (PubMed/Medline, Cochrane, and Embase) on February 15, 2023. The inclusion criteria were any type of study of patients with scalp AVMs who were diagnosed and confirmed through angiography and treated with combined preoperative EE and SE...

OBJECTIVES: Telehealth has become increasingly important in achieving universal health coverage. It offers doctors and their patients' convenience, including providing quality care at reduced costs. During the coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic, telehealth has been a vital tool for remote healthcare services. This study aimed to assess the satisfaction of adult and pediatric neurologists and neurosurgeons using telehealth, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This study had 348 participants...

Carbofuran and acetamiprid pose the highest residual risk among pesticides found in wolfberries. This study aimed to degrade these pesticides in wolfberries using a multi-array dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBD), evaluate the impact on safety and quality and explore their degradation mechanism. The results showed that DBD treatment achieved 90.6% and 80.9% degradation rates for carbofuran and acetamiprid, respectively, following a first-order kinetic reaction. The 120 s treatment successfully reduced pesticide contamination to levels below maximum residue limits...

BACKGROUND: The immune system comprises many different types of cells, each with different functions and properties during immune defence. The numbers and types of immune cells in the circulation is highly dynamic and regulated by infections, ageing and certain types of cancers. It is recognised that immune function decreases during ageing, but the biological age at which these functional changes occur is variable, and how ageing affects the different sub-types of lymphocytes, monocytes and NK cells in the circulation is not fully defined...

BACKGROUND: Developing countries experience limited access to HCV laboratory tests for different reasons. Providing near to real-time HCV testing and results especially to at-risk populations including those in rural settings for timely initiation to treatment is key. Within a rural Myanmar setting, we compared HCV diagnostic detection and quantification of the GeneXpert, and Advanced Biological Laboratories UltraGene-HCV assays against the gold standard and reference method Roche real-time HCV in Myanmar...

Background and Objectives: Low-birth-weight (LBW) neonates are at increased risk of morbidity and mortality which are inversely proportional to birth weight, while macrosomic babies are at risk of birth injuries and other related complications. Many maternal risk factors were associated with the extremes of birthweight. The objectives of this study are to investigate maternal risk factors for low and high birthweight and to report on the neonatal complications associated with abnormal birth weights. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of medical records of deliveries ≥ 23 weeks...

Replication Factor C Subunit 4 (RFC4), an oncogene implicated in many human cancers, has yet to be extensively studied in many cancer types to determine its expression patterns and tumor tissue function. Various bioinformatics tools were used to analyze RFC4 as a potential oncogene and therapeutic target across many cancers. We first examined RFC4 expression levels in several human tumor types to determine relationships with tumor grade, stage, metastasis, and patient survival. We also examined RFC4's genetic changes, epigenetic methylation, and effect on tumor microenvironment (TME) immune cell infiltration...

BACKGROUND: Behcet's disease (BD) is a multisystem autoimmune relapsing vasculitis with an almost unknown etiology involving both large and small vessels. The neurological involvement called neuro-Behcet's disease (NBD) is rare. NBD can be responsible for tumor-like masses mimicking low-grade gliomas in only a few cases. METHODS: We report here the main characteristics, treatment, and outcome of 43 patients (4 personal cases and 39 patients from the literature) with a pseudotumoral presentation of NBD (PT NBD)...

Methods: Forty-four people with MCI (11 males and 33 females) aged 65 to 75 years were randomly assigned to an 8-week, twice-weekly program of either aerobic training (AT group, n = 15), aerobic training combined with cognitive games (ACT group, n = 15), or simply reading for controls (CG group, n = 14)...

Retained needles are frequently observed in intravenous drug users. However, an incidental discovery of multiple needles at the neck seldom occurs. These foreign bodies remain either asymptomatic or cause local and central complications that can be fatal. We report the case of a 43-year-old male having a medical record of human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C who presented to our department with a 3-day history of a febrile lateral neck swelling. He reported a history of repetitive intravenous drug use and previous abscesses that were surgically drained...

Pectin methylesterase (PME), a family of enzymes that catalyze the demethylation of pectin, influences seed germination. Phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) inhibits seed germination. However, little is known about the function of PMEs in response to ABA-mediated seed germination. In this study, we found the role of PME31 in response to ABA-mediated inhibition of seed germination. The expression of PME31 is prominent in the embryo and is repressed by ABA treatment. Phenotype analysis showed that disruption of PME31 increases ABA-mediated inhibition of seed germination, whereas overexpression of PME31 attenuates this effect...

The expanding number of rare immunodeficiency syndromes offers an opportunity to understand key genes that support immune defence against infectious diseases. However, analysis of these in patients is complicated by their treatments and co-morbid infections requiring the use of mouse models for detailed investigations. Here we develop a mouse model of DOCK2 immunodeficiency and demonstrate that these mice have delayed clearance of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infections. We also uncovered a critical, cell intrinsic role of DOCK2 in the priming of anti-viral CD8+ T cells and in particular their initial expansion, despite apparently normal early activation of these cells...

Net energy (NE) enables the prediction of more accurate feed energy values by taking into account the heat increment which is approximately 25% of apparent metabolizable energy (AME) in poultry. Nevertheless, application of NE in poultry industry has not been practiced widely. To predict the NE values of broiler diets, 23 diets were prepared by using 13 major ingredients (wheat, corn, paddy rice, broken rice, cassava pellets, full-fat soybean, soybean meal, canola meal, animal protein, rice bran, wheat bran, palm kernel meal and palm kernel oil)...

Schwannomas are benign tumors arising from well-differentiated Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. They are usually found on the limbs, head, and neck. It is uncommon for schwannoma to occur in the pelvis and when it does, it is often diagnosed late. Pelvic schwannoma when diagnosed are often bigger in size (>5 cm) and may present with local symptoms such as constipation and bladder outlet obstruction. We hereby present a patient with concurrent metastatic prostate carcinoma and pelvic schwannoma. The patient is a 57-year-old man initially diagnosed with prostate cancer and was lost to follow-up...
