In the last years, applications for silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) continue to increase together with the concerns about their potential input and hazards in aquatic ecosystems, where microalgae are key organisms. The aim of the present study was to assess the relative sensitivity of three marine microalgae species with differences in cell wall composition/structure exposed to Poly N-vinyl-2-pirrolidone/Polyethyleneimine (PVP/PEI) coated 5nm Ag NPs and uncoated 47nm Ag NP. As limited attention has been paid to the role of coating agents in NP toxicity, the effect of PVP/PEI alone was also evaluated...

Uniform Co9Se8 quantum dots (CSQDs) were successfully synthesized through a facile solvothermal method. The obtained CSQDs with average size of 3.2 ± 0.1 nm and thickness of 1.8 ± 0.2 nm were demonstrated good stability and strong fluorescence under UV light after being easily dispersed in both of N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and deionized water. We demonstrated the flexible resistive switching memory device based on the hybridization of CSQDs and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (CSQDs-PVP). The device with the Al/CSQDs-PVP/Pt/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) structure represented excellent switching parameters such as high ON/OFF current ratio, low operating voltages, good stability and flexibility...

We previously developed a lutein-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) complex with improved aqueous saturation solubility and stability, though the conjugation mechanism is still unclear. In this paper, experiments with astaxanthin-PVP complex and curcumin-PVP complex were carried out, which indicated that PVP could improve the solubility and stability of astaxanthin and curcumin. We aimed to construct a computational model capable of understanding the protective effect in complexes formed between PVP and antioxidants, through which the binding mode of PVP and antioxidants was investigated with molecular modelling in order to obtain the interactions, binding energy, binding site and surface area between PVP and antioxidants...

The film forming ability and conductivity of g-C3N4 are still unsatisfying despite much progress having been made in g-C3N4 related photocatalysts. New methods for synthesizing g-C3N4 films coupled with excellent conductive materials are of significance. Herein, a facile method for synthesizing novel carbonized PVP/g-C3N4 (CPVP/g-C3N4) films have been developed via electrospinning technique. Nano carbons are generated by in-situ carbonization of PVP in the films, which could enhance the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of the films due to its good conductivity...

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can enter eukaryotic cells and exert toxic effects, most probably as a consequence of the release of Ag(+) ions. Due to the elusive nature of Ag(+) ionic species, quantitative information concerning AgNP intracellular dissolution is missing. By using a synchrotron nanoprobe, silver is visualized and quantified in hepatocytes (HepG2) exposed to AgNPs; the synergistic use of electron microscopy allows for the discrimination between nanoparticular and ionic forms of silver within a single cell...

Pharmaceutical film dosage forms have recently become of interest to pharmaceutical formulation development, particularly for patients who experience difficulty in swallowing tablets or capsules. Furthermore, formulation scientists require a reliable analytical approach to reveal vital insight and investigate the drying process of these films to consolidate suitable quality control. Since most of the polymer-based films containing a drug are produced via solution or dispersion states, an estimation of the physicochemical properties of drugs during drying and dissolution is critical to design novel formulations with the consideration to control drug release, i...

The development of novel materials with excellent performance depends not only on the constituents but also on their remarkable micro/nanostructures. In this work, manganese oxide (Mn3O4) hausmannite structures with a uniform three-dimensional (3D) flower-like hierarchical architecture have been successfully synthesized by a novel chemical route using surfactants as structure-directing agents. Microstructure analysis indicates that the obtained 3D flower-like Mn3O4 superstructure consists of a large number of two-dimensional (2D) Mn3O4 nanosheets, which is different from the reported 3D Mn3O4 hierarchical structures based on zero-dimensional nanoparticles or one-dimensional nanowires and nanorods...

Luminescent-magnetic bifunctional NaGdF4:Dy(3+) nanofibers and nanobelts have been successfully fabricated by a combination of electrospinning followed by subsequent calcination with fluorination technology for the first time. The structure, morphologies, and luminescence and magnetic properties of the synthesized materials have been investigated by a variety of techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that as-prepared NaGdF4:Dy(3+) nanostructures are pure hexagonal structures. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations indicate that directly electrospinning-made PVP/[NaNO3 + Gd(NO3)3 + Dy(NO3)3] composite nanofibers and nanobelts have smooth surfaces, good dispersion and uniform size, and surfaces of NaGdF4:Dy(3+) nanofibers and nanobelts become rough after calcination and fluorination processes...
