In this work, an analytical method for the determination of eight non-allowed nitrofurans, including nifurpirinol and the metabolites of furazolidone, furaltadone, nitrofurantoin, nitrofurazone, nifursol, nitrovin, and nifuroxazide in animal tissues, including muscle (poultry, bovine, ovine, porcine, rabbit, and fish), kidney (bovine, ovine, porcine), and eggs, has been developed and validated according to Regulation (EU) 2021/808. The method was based on derivatization with 2-nitrobenzaldehyde in acid medium, followed by vortex-assisted liquid-liquid extraction and solid phase extraction for sample purification prior to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry...

In this study, we present the first meta-analysis of human urine reported in the literature, drawing data from a total of 35 articles with a combined participant count of 14,021. Through this analysis, we have developed an artificial urine (AU) composition that can be adjusted within typical physiological parameters for in vitro applications. Our findings demonstrate the utility of this AU in determining the solubility of nitrofurantoin, particularly in the context of crystalluria. Notably, we observe that in saline, nitrofurantoin solubility, within the framework of its urinary pharmacokinetics, suggests a risk of crystalluria...

Fluorescence quenching induced by photoinduced electron transfer (PET) stands as an effective strategy for identifying water pollutants. Herein, a novel (4, 8)-connected three-dimensional framework Cu(I)-MOF ([Cu2 I(tpt)]n ) with unique 8-connected [Cu4 I2 ]2+ cationic clusters is designed by employing the nitrogen-rich ligand (Htpt = 5-[4(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)]phenyl-2H-tetrazole). Water-stabilized Cu(I)-MOF exhibits outstanding fluorescence properties, facilitating its application in detecting organic pollutants in water...

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to isolate and characterize antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli from urine samples of children at the Mother and Child Hospital in Ondo State, Nigeria, assessing antibiogram profiling and resistance genes. METHODOLOGY: Three hundred urine samples (158 females, 142 males), aged 3-5 years, were collected, transported on ice, and analyzed bacteriologically. E. coli and Gram-negative bacteria were isolated using Eosin Methylene Blue agar and identified through colony morphology and biochemical tests...

IMPORTANCE: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur in 8.6% to 48.1% of patients after intradetrusor onabotulinumtoxinA injections. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate both choice and duration of antibiotic prophylaxis on the incidence of UTI within 30 days after in-office onabotulinumtoxinA injections. STUDY DESIGN: We included a single-site, retrospective cohort of 305 patients with overactive bladder or bladder pain syndrome receiving postprocedure prophylactic antibiotics for in-office, 100-unit intradetrusor onabotulinumtoxinA injections from 2019 to 2023...

OBJECTIVES: We characterized UTI treatment among males in Veterans Affairs (VA) outpatient settings by age, race, and ethnicity and identified demographic characteristics predictive of recommended first-choice antibiotic therapy. METHODS: We conducted a national, retrospective cohort study of male VA patients diagnosed with a UTI and dispensed an outpatient antibiotic from January 2010 through December 2020...

Background Fosfomycin, nitrofurantoin, and co-trimoxazole are cheap and effective first-line oral antimicrobials in cases of uncomplicated cystitis in males and non-pregnant females. Fosfomycin and nitrofurantoin are called urinary antiseptics because these two drugs are primarily excreted in the kidney and concentrated in the urine without systemic effect. The present study was designed to evaluate the in vitro activities of fosfomycin, nitrofurantoin, and co-trimoxazole against uropathogens isolated at King Khalid Hospital Al-Majmaah, KSA...

Chryseobacterium demonstrates a diverse environmental presence and a significant pathogenic potential across various ecosystems. This clinical case showcases a rare instance of bacterial infection in a 75-year-old male with untreated diabetes and recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). The patient presented symptoms of abdominal pain, burning urination, fever, and an elevated eosinophil count. A subsequent urine culture identified a Chryseobacterium-related bacterium as the causative agent, exhibiting sensitivity to piperacillin/tazobactam, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and nitrofurantoin, which led to successful treatment using oral nitrofurantoin...

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) pose a significant challenge in the care of renal transplant recipients. This comprehensive review explores this population's multifaceted landscape of UTIs, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and tailored management strategies. Renal transplant recipients face an elevated risk of UTIs due to immunosuppression, altered urinary tract anatomy, and complex comorbidities. Complications of UTIs can lead to graft dysfunction and systemic illness, underscoring the need for effective management...

Lung abscess is a microbial infection that can cause necrosis of the lung tissue and formation of cavities. Antibiotics and bronchoscopy are needed in the management of large lung abscess to prevent further complications. However, some of the cases have poor clinical improvement. The aim of this case report was to describe a patient with large lung abscess who had well responded to antibiotic therapy combined with bronchoscopy drainage. We reported a 55-year-old man with a lung abscess presented with initial symptom of acute productive cough for two weeks...

Escherichia coli is one of the major pathogens causing mastitis in lactating mammals. We hypothesized that E. coli from the gut and mammary glands may have similar genomic characteristics in the causation of mastitis. To test this hypothesis, we used whole genome sequencing to analyze two multidrug resistant E. coli strains isolated from mammary tissue (G2M6U) and fecal sample (G6M1F) of experimentally induced mastitis mice. Both strains showed resistance to multiple (>7) antibiotics such as oxacillin, aztreonam, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, gentamicin, cefoxitin, ampicillin, tetracycline, azithromycin and nitrofurantoin...

Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative bacterium that prominently causes a variety of clinical infections in humans, such as diarrhea, sepsis, and urinary tract infection. This bacterium is a common multidrug-resistant threat in community and hospital settings worldwide. This study examined the antimicrobial susceptibility and genetic relationship based on Clermont phylotyping and ERIC-PCR of 84 E. coli urinary isolates from provincial and community hospitals in Thailand. All the isolates were completely susceptible to nitrofurantoin, whereas almost all isolates were susceptible to carbapenem, fosfomycin, and amikacin...
