BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of thyroid nodular diseases requires an integrated approach that has been widely established over the past years. This strategy includes: ultrasonography (US) with; implemented Color-Power-Doppler, conventional scintigraphy also with positive indicators, specific pathological studies targeted by immunohistochemically-assays, and the fine needle; aspiration biopsy (FNAB), which, usually, in case of "Follicular Lesions" (10-20%) findings is; unable to distinguish carcinoma from follicular adenoma, then indicating the necessity of surgery to; obtain a correct diagnosis...

AIM: Carcinogenesis has been related to systematic inflammatory response. Our aim was to study white blood cell and platelet indices as markers of this inflammatory response in thyroid cancer and to associate them with various clinicopathological parameters. METHODS: We included 228 patients who underwent thyroidectomy within a period of 54 months, 89 with papillary thyroid carcinoma and 139 with multinodular hyperplasia. We examined potential links between white blood cell and platelet indices on the one hand and the type thyroid pathology and various clinicopathological parameters on the other...

BACKGROUND: The superior parathyroid gland is known to be almost constant in its location under the false thyroid capsule. Could it be a landmark to point to the site of incision of the false thyroid capsule and find the plane of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) during thyroidectomy? METHODS: The study included 48 patients with benign goiter scheduled for hemithyroidectomy or total thyroidectomy; there were 16 cases of solitary thyroid nodules, 27 cases of multinodular goiter, and 5 cases of toxic goiter...

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the larynx and trachea is very rare. CASE: A 45-year-old man with ACC of the larynx presenting as a thyroid mass is reported in this study. Physical examination revealed a large solid thyroid nodule in the left lobe without any lymphadenopathy. A technetium thyroid scan showed multinodular goiter with cold nodules in the left lobe, isthmus, and functioning nodules in the right lobe. A large thyroid mass originating from the left side of the larynx, mostly the left vocal cord and the infraglottic part, was seen using enhanced magnetic resonance imaging after rupture of the thyroid cartilage on the left side...

Evidence from clinical and experimental data suggests that thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) signaling is involved in energy expenditure through its impact on white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT). TSHR expression increases during mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation into fat. We hypothesize that TSHR activation [TSHR*, elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroid-stimulating antibodies (TSAB), or activating mutation] influences MSC differentiation, which contributes to body composition changes seen in hypothyroidism or Graves' disease (GD)...

BACKGROUND: Current surgical indications for Graves' disease include intractability to medical and/or radioablative therapy, compressive symptoms and worsening ophthalmopathy. Total thyroidectomy for Graves' disease may be technically challenging and lead to untoward perioperative outcomes. This study examines outcomes in patients with Graves' disease who underwent total thyroidectomy and assesses its safety for this patient population. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was performed using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database from 2006 to 2011...

PURPOSE: A case of probable interaction of levothyroxine and ritonavir is presented along with a review of the relevant literature and recommendations on clinical management. SUMMARY: A 37-year-old woman with human immunodeficiency virus infection who had recently undergone thyroidectomy for a benign multinodular goiter presented to a clinic with hypothyroidism (she was also found to be pregnant), and treatment with levothyroxine 75 μg daily was initiated. While receiving antiretroviral therapy (abacavir-lamivudine and lopinavir-ritonavir) during pregnancy, the patient had persistently elevated serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations (up to 125...

BACKGROUND: Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor (TSHR) autoantibodies (TRAbs) are a heterogeneous group of antibodies (Abs) with different functionality. Among all TRAbs only the stimulating one (S-TRAbs) are considered the pathogenetic marker of Graves' Disease (GD). To date, the methods available for TRAbs testing are based on immunoassays (IMAs) which detect total serum TRAbs or bioassays which are not suitable in clinical practice, even though they discern Abs functionality...

The syndrome of Familial Non Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (FNMTC) includes two or more patients with an isolated non-medullary thyroid cancer (papillary, follicular, anaplastic) within the same family. To diagnose FNMTC, the clinician must exclude a syndromic presentation such as the syndromes of Cowden, Gardner or Werner, and the Carney Complex. Up to now, a hundred families with FNMTC have been genetically studied, including forms with (Ch19p13.2) or without oxyphilia (Ch2q21), in association with a multinodular goiter (Ch14q32), or with a renal cancer (Ch1q21)...

Stones are very frequently found in the gallbladder and urinary tract. Rarely the thyroid gland can be a site for stone formation. Few cases of calcification in thyroid gland have been described in the medical literature in association with papillary carcinoma and multinodular goiter. A unique case of a thyroid swelling studded with multiple stones in its parenchyma, in the histopathological background of sclerosing thyroiditis in an 80-year-old male is documented here. Surgical excision was undertaken with an uneventful postoperative period...

Thyroid nodules are a common clinical problem worldwide. Although thyroid cancer accounts for a small percentage of thyroid nodules, the majority are benign. 8-Hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels are a marker of oxidative stress and play a key role in the initiation and development of a range of diseases and cancer types. This study evaluates cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome (CBMN-cyt) assay parameters and plasma 8-OHdG levels and their association with thyroid nodule size and thyroid hormones in patients with multinodular goiter...

Large multinodular goiters, obvious to the naked eye, are rarely confronted by clinicians nowadays; yet they do have a place in the differential diagnosis of the neck masses. Due to the fact that 80% of the neck masses in adults are related to malignancy, the later should be ruled out.
