We conducted two studies to test the validity, reliability, feasibility and acceptability of using video chat technology to quantify dietary and pill-taking (i.e. supplement and medication) adherence. In study 1, we investigated whether video chat technology can accurately quantify adherence to dietary and pill-taking interventions. Mock study participants ate food items and swallowed pills, while performing randomised scripted 'cheating' behaviours to mimic non-adherence. Monitoring was conducted in a cross-over design, with two monitors watching in-person and two watching remotely by Skype on a smartphone...

Using images from the Image Database Consortium and Image Database Resource Initiative (LIDC-IDRI), we developed a methodology for classifying lung nodules. The proposed methodology uses image processing and pattern recognition techniques. To classify volumes of interest into nodules and non-nodules, we used shape measurements only, analyzing their shape using shape diagrams, proportion measurements, and a cylinder-based analysis. In addition, we use the support vector machine classifier. To test the proposed methodology, it was applied to 833 images from the LIDC-IDRI database, and cross-validation with k-fold, where [Formula: see text], was used to validate the results...

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are crucial to the immunopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). The mechanism of action of interferon beta (IFN-β) in relapsing-remitting (RR) MS patients is largely unknown. miR-145 and miR-20a-5p previously reported as diagnosis biomarker in treatment naïve RRMS patients and their expression after IFN-β therapy might be indicative of molecular mechanism of IFN-β. Cross-talking between JAK/STAT pathway and complementary pathways like MAPK is important in IFN-β signaling. Here, in order to clarify the ambiguous molecular mechanism of IFN-β and evaluate the potential use of them as a biomarker for monitoring of therapy, we investigated the expression of miR-145 and miR-20a-5p in blood sample of 15 treatment naïve RRMS patients, 15 IFN-β-treated RRMS patients, and 15 healthy volunteers (HVs)...

The effect of Ca(2+) ion cross-linker on acryalamide grafted carboxymethyl xanthan gum (CMXG-g-PAAm) on the drug release was investigated. Previously, CMXG was synthesized from XG and further grafted to CMXG-g-PAAm to retard the drug release. Once the CaCl2 solution is added to CMXG-g-PAAm, Ca(2+) considerably affected the drug release mechanism mainly by diffusion and erosion. In order to validate the grafted polymer, tablets were prepared using wet granulation and dry granulation methods It has been noticed that the tablets prepared by wet granulation successfully controls the release of the drug over an extended period of time...

PURPOSE: Nocturia is associated with poor sleep quality; however, little is known about the relationship between nocturia and sleep quality across different workforce-relevant age groups of adults. This has implications for developing new treatment strategies that are well tolerated across populations. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving merged data from the 2005-2006 and 2007-2008 waves of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey...

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health problem worldwide. Several factors have been found to be associated with an increased prevalence of IPV, such as substance use. A cross-sectional study was conducted with the aim of determining the prevalence of IPV among women entering Hospital del Mar (Barcelona) for any medical/surgical reason, and who had a diagnosis of substance use disorder. Secondly, it was intended to psychometrically validate the Spanish version of the Hurt, Insulted, Threatened with Harm, Screamed (HITS) questionnaire...

Local variation in the density of Anopheles mosquitoes and the risk of exposure to bites are essential to explain the spatial and temporal heterogeneities in the transmission of malaria. Vector distribution is driven by environmental factors. Based on variables derived from satellite imagery and meteorological observations, this study aimed to dynamically model and map the densities of Anopheles darlingi in the municipality of Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock (French Guiana). Longitudinal sampling sessions of An...

The competing risk method has become more acceptable for time-to-event data analysis because of its advantage over the standard Cox model in accounting for competing events in the risk set. This study aimed to construct a prediction model for diabetes using a subdistribution hazards model. We prospectively followed 1857 community residents who were aged ≥ 55 years, free of diabetes at baseline examination from August 1992 to December 2012. Diabetes was defined as a self-reported history of diabetes diagnosis, taking antidiabetic medicine, or having fasting plasma glucose (FPG) ≥ 7...
