The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program development was identified as a pivotal part of the Coppin State University (CSU) Helene Fuld School of Nursing's' Strategic Plan. The program was launched as early as 2009 with plans to be implemented before 2015. The program was developed in response to the October 2004 endorsement of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) position statement which recognizes the DNP as the appropriate credential for all advanced nursing practice roles by 2015. The Helene Fuld School of Nursing began its inaugural doctoral program in May 2015...

BACKGROUND: There is controversy about how to manage requests by patients or surrogates for treatments that clinicians believe should not be administered. PURPOSE: This multisociety statement provides recommendations to prevent and manage intractable disagreements about the use of such treatments in intensive care units. METHODS: The recommendations were developed using an iterative consensus process, including expert committee development and peer review by designated committees of each of the participating professional societies (American Thoracic Society, American Association for Critical Care Nurses, American College of Chest Physicians, European Society for Intensive Care Medicine, and Society of Critical Care)...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
Kristofer Kusano, Hampton C Gabler
OBJECTIVE: The odds of death for a seriously injured crash victim are drastically reduced if he or she received care at a trauma center. Advanced automated crash notification (AACN) algorithms are postcrash safety systems that use data measured by the vehicles during the crash to predict the likelihood of occupants being seriously injured. The accuracy of these models are crucial to the success of an AACN. The objective of this study was to compare the predictive performance of competing injury risk models and algorithms: logistic regression, random forest, AdaBoost, naïve Bayes, support vector machine, and classification k-nearest neighbors...

An empowering clinical nurse advancement system can facilitate institutional behaviors that embrace all of AACN's healthy work environment standards and thus serve as a building block for developing a flourishing health care environment. The results generate positive outcomes that are evident to health care professionals, patients, patients' families, and health care organizations. Patients benefit from highly satisfied employees who work in a culture of caring and excellence.

Significant advances in biomedical science and in the complexity of health care, coupled with a worsening nursing shortage and numerous reports of unsafe and inadequate patient care, have prompted concerns about both nursing education and nursing practice. Beginning in 2000, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) made a thorough study of nursing education, regulation, and practice issues. Input and consultation were sought from AACN members, nursing practice leaders, regulators, and other health professionals...

The students and faculty enrolled in the first TNP class have set a standard for future TNPs: a rigorous course of education with advanced practice and scholarship within an advanced practice collaborative model. Because of the increasingly number of trauma victims and the highly specialized care they require, nurses must come forward and provide quality care. The TNPs and their faculty must promote further recognition of the TNP role, become leaders in the field of acute care, and continue to develop and maintain collaborative relationship with physicians in support of advanced practice nursing in many areas of tertiary care...

AACN exists to promote the health and welfare of mankind by advancing the science and art of critical care nursing. One of AACN's long-range goals is to promote educational standards for critical care nursing. As a prelude to dissemination of AACN's Education Standards for Critical Care Nursing, this article presented the conceptual framework used to develop this set of standards.
