OBJECTIVE: To determine if the point mutation of nt313713 T --> C in the promoter region of capsular polysaccharide biosynthesis (cps) operon is responsible for the deficiency of capsular polysaccharide in S. pneumoniae SPY1 strain. METHODS: Western blot was used to compare the amounts of capsular polysaccharide between the wild-type strain and SPY1 strain. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to determine transcription levels of the first four genes of cps operon , cps2A, cps2B, cps2C and cps2D...

We report a new technique of pharyngoesophagoplasty by right coloplasty, indicated in postcaustic severe pharyngeal stenosis, analyzing the anatomical and functional results in terms of respiratory tract and phonation as well as digestive tract outcome. We compared our results with those obtained with other procedures. Between March 1995 and September 1998, pharyngoesophagoplasty by right coloplasty was performed in 13 patients. All had severe hypopharyngeal stricture with total obliteration of the two piriform sinuses and the upper esophageal sphincter...

Anti-bacterial activities of a sulfonated human immunoglobulin preparation against penicillin resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were examined. Five week old CBA/J mice were challenged by 10 times of 50% lethal doses of penicillin sensitive (SP1) and resistant (SP2) strains of Streptococcus pneumniae serotype 19, and were treated with a sulfonated human immunoglobulin preparation (hIg). Fifty % protective dose (ED50) were 2-4 mg hIg/ mouse. These doses were parallel with the challenged doses despite of the challenged bacteria, and it was calculated that 6 x 10(6) bacteria were killed by one mg of hIg in both bacteria...
