Life developed on Earth probably about 3.8 billion years ago, on a planet that was already largely covered by oceans and where the atmosphere was very humid. The reactions, which may have led to the formation of the first polymers, particularly to the first peptides and nucleic acids, must have been compatible with these conditions. This is the case of the reaction of nitriles with aminothiols, such as cysteine and homocysteine. Since aminonitriles are the probable precursors of amino acids, this condensation reaction has been able to rapidly yield dipeptides, tripeptides, oligomers and even true polymers, each containing thiol functions...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Shanghai adults, and explore their associations with dietary patterns. METHODS: Food frequency questionnaire information of 1535 adults aged > or = 18 years old were collected by multi-stage cluster random sampling method, and used for the identification of overweight and obesity based on the criteria from Working Group On Obesity In China. Factor analysis was applied to determine major dietary patterns that may potentially associated with overweight and obesity...

AIMS: Surgical treatment of obstructed defecation (OD) carries frequent recurrences. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role dynamic magnetic resonance imaging defecography, and to elucidate the underlying anatomic and pathophysiologic background of pelvic floor disorders in these patients in order to minimize failures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty consecutive constipated patients with OD symptoms (31 females) with mean age 48.15+/-14.29 years. They underwent perineal examination, proctoscopy, anorectal manometry and Dynamic MRI defecography...

AIM OF THE STUDY: Damage control laparotomy is a new approach to the more severe abdominal traumas. It stems from a better understanding of the physiopathology of the haemorragic shock. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A national retrospective study from 27 centers about 109 trauma patients who underwent a damage control procedure between January 1990 and December 2001, is analysed. Surgical procedures included 97 hepatic packing, 10 abdominal packing, 4 exclusive skin closure, 1 open laparotomy technique and 3 digestive stapplings...

UNLABELLED: Ultrasonography is a nonsophisticated, cheap and safe exploration, that makes it the most used non-invasive method in the diagnosis of biliary diseases. Present study aims to evaluate preoperative ultrasonography's capacity of predicting technical challanges in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). MATERIAL AND METHOD: The trial is represented by a sequence of 100 patients undergoing LC in 2001. The conversions to open procedure were excluded. Patients with certified lithaisis were re-examined by ultrasonography the day before surgery...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The authors describe a new internal fixation device, and report on 17 proximal humeral fractures managed with this technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The fracture patterns, using Neer's classification were: 9 displaced three-part fractures, 4 displaced four-part fractures and 4 interior fracture dislocations (mean age of the patients: 70 years). The device is a two-part titanium device. The humeral component has a long vertical stem cemented in the humeral shaft; and a short proximal portion set at an angle of 135 degrees on the stem, with a neck and a Morse taper cone...

A randomized controlled study between Shouldice technic (119 cases) and laparoscopic totally pre-peritoneal hernia repair (122 cases) was performed to evaluate the different costs. Only with reusable devices, and if the Prolene Mesh is not fixed by stapple, laparoscopic repair, even a specific increasing expenses (700 FF) allow a little benefit (1100 FF per patient). Laparoscopic hernia repair is really benefit for active workers, specially in liberal practice. These conclusion suggest to correlate the technic with professional activity...

The authors report the datas of 14 patients with perforation of the esophagus who underwent surgical treatments. Three patients died (21%). Various technics have been used, but a new personal one consisting in stappling the cervical esophagus--and sometimes the lower end in the chest-is brought forward. The last six patients who underwent this technic healed. Five out five have got a spontaneous repermeation of the esophagus. The sixth healed after fiberendoscopic dilatation.

UNLABELLED: Since the beginning of our pancreas transplantation program in November, 1987, 50 patients have received a segmental intraperitoneal neoprene-occluded pancreas graft and a contralateral kidney graft. The aim of this study is to present our surgical technique and the postoperative complications encountered. Operation in the donor: subtotal pancreatectomy is performed. A venous patch is preserved at the end of the splenic vein. The splenic artery is removed with a patch taken from the end of the celiac trunk and the origin of the common hepatic artery, even in case of right (n = 1) or left (n = 4) hepatic artery...
