OBJECTIVE: We correlate and evaluate the accuracy of accepted anthropometric methods of percent body fat (%BF) quantification, namely, hydrostatic weighing (HW) and air displacement plethysmography (ADP), to 2 automatic adipose tissue quantification methods using computed tomography (CT). METHODS: Twenty volunteer subjects (14 men, 6 women) received head-to-toe CT scans. Hydrostatic weighing and ADP were obtained from 17 and 12 subjects, respectively. The CT data underwent conversion using 2 separate algorithms, namely, the Schneider method and the Beam method, to convert Hounsfield units to their respective tissue densities...

Combined stress of salinity and heavy metal is a serious problem for crop production; however, physiological mechanisms of tolerance to such condition remain elusive in cotton. Here, we used two cotton genotypes differing in salt tolerance, to understand their response to salinity (NaCl) and cadmium (Cd) either alone or in combination (Cd + Na) via hydroponics. Results showed that salinity and/or Cd drastically reduced plant growth, chlorophyll content and photosynthesis, with greater effect observed in Zhongmian 41 (sensitive) than Zhong 9806 (tolerant)...

Ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) was used to extract flavonoid-enriched antioxidants from alfalfa aerial part. Response surface methodology (RSM), based on a four-factor, five-level central composite design (CCD), was employed to obtain the optimal extraction parameters, in which the flavonoid content was maximum and the antioxidant activity of the extracts was strongest. Radical scavenging capacity of the extracts, which represents the amounts of antioxidants in alfalfa, was determined by using 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonicacid) (ABTS) and 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods...

BACKGROUND: For decades, the incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have declined. More recently, we have seen a halting in these declines, especially at younger ages. It is difficult to predict how these changing trends will impact CVD prevalence. We aimed to predict future prevalence of CVDs in Western Australian adults from 2005-2045 based on current incidence and mortality probabilities, population growth and ageing. METHODS AND RESULTS: Multi-state life table models were developed using 2005-2009 age- and sex-specific incidence and mortality probabilities from the Western Australian Data Linkage System...

BACKGROUND: We describe older (>50 years) HIV-infected adults after antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation, evaluating immunological recovery by age category, considering individual trajectories based on the pretreatment CD4. We also describe mortality on ART and its risk factors by age category including the contribution of poor immunological recovery at a large urban clinic in Kampala, Uganda. METHODS: We performed a cohort analysis of adult (>18 years) HIV-infected patients who initiated ART between January 1, 2004 and January 3, 2012...

BACKGROUND: After neurological injury, gait rehabilitation typically focuses on task oriented training with many repetitions of a particular movement. Modern rehabilitation devices, including treadmills, augment gait rehabilitation. However, they typically provide gait training only in the forward direction of walking, hence the mechanisms associated with changing direction during turning are not practiced. A regular treadmill extended with the addition of rotation around the vertical axis is a simple device that may enable the practice of turning during walking...

In the dispensing process, powdered medicines are often blended with diluents or different kinds of powder. With blending, the mass percent of the medicine in the mixture is unknown until the active pharmaceutical ingredient is determined with techniques such as spectroscopy and chromatography. However, pharmacists need to confirm the exact blending ratio of the dispensing mixture in pharmacies. We aimed to develop a precise and concise method to measure the mass percent of powdered medicine mixtures without an expensive analytical apparatus...

The Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) initiated the single-arm, phase II study 9806 to determine the safety and efficacy of daily thalidomide with radiation therapy in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. Patients were treated with thalidomide (200 mg daily) from day one of radiation therapy, increasing by 100-200 to 1,200 mg every 1-2 weeks until tumor progression or unacceptable toxicity. The median survival time (MST) of all 89 evaluable patients was 10 months. When compared with the historical database stratified by recursive partitioning analysis (RPA) class, this end point was not different [hazard ratio (HR) = 1...

Disruptive behaviour disorders (DBDs), including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) are chronic disorders with significant overlap in aetiology and presentation. An integrative examination of environmental risk factors is lacking. Six literature searches of web-based bibliographic databases were completed to identify literature on DBDs in general and five disorders in particular: CD, ODD, ADHD, deficits of attention, motor control and perception, and reactive attachment disorder...

The title compound, [Zn(C(7)H(4)N(2)O(3)S)(2)(C(2)H(6)OS)(2)], is a neutral four-coordinate complex with a tetra-hedral geometry. The metal atom is surrounded by the two dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) ligands, each coordinating through the O atom, and two anionic saccharinate (1,1,3-trioxo-2,3-dihydro-1λ(6),2-benzo-thia-zol-2-ide) ligands coordinating through the N atom. The tetra-hedral geometry is slightly distorted as is evident from the N-Zn-N bond angle of 113.85 (6)°, the O-Zn-O bond angle of 98.92 (6)° and O-Zn-N bond angles of 116...

There are many studies in the literature suggesting an acquired, apparently progressive infertility due to varicocele. In fact, varicocelectomy has become the most commonly performed male infertility surgery. Assisted reproductive technologies such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are also important for couples with male factor infertility associated with varicocele. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of varicocelectomy on sperm quality and pregnancy rate with ICSI. Data were analyzed from 248 patients who had varicocele or underwent a previous varicocelectomy and were treated with ICSI between 2000 and 2008...

The state of Santa Catarina (Brazil) is known to have represented a cultural crossroads in South America due to several historic migrations mainly from Europe and Africa. We set out to scrutinize whether the genetic imprint of these migrations could be traced through analysis of the matrilineal gene pool of the Catarinenses. The entire control region of the mitochondrial DNA was studied in 80 healthy and maternally unrelated individuals. The analysis of haplogroup distribution revealed that this population is extremely heterogeneous, showing the coexistence of matrilineal lineages with three different phylogeographic origins...

BACKGROUND: One of the most important factors for the success of health information technology (IT) implementation is users' acceptance and use of that technology. Thailand has implemented the national universal healthcare program and has been restructuring the country's health IT system to support it. However, there is no national data available regarding the acceptance and use of health IT in many healthcare facilities, including community health centers (CHCs). This study employed a modified Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) structural model, to understand factors that influence health IT adoption in community health centers in Thailand and to validate this extant IT adoption model in a developing country health care context...
