Traveling with babies and children is challenging for parents and the doctor providing travel medicine advice. Especially pediatric VFR (visiting friends and relatives) travelers have a higher risk for infectious diseases due to lower risk perception and higher exposure. Being well prepared helps in exploring the world while staying healthy. Topics to be discussed in pediatric travel consultation are travel vaccinations, mosquito repellents, malaria prophylaxis, thorough sun protection, rehydration for gastroentritis, avoidance of rabies exposure, an agetailored travel pharmacy and more...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Delayed gastric emptying (DGE) is one of the most frequent complications after pyloric preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD). The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of antecolic versus retrocolic reconstruction of gastroentric anastomosis on DGE after PPPD. METHODS: 30 patients with diagnosis of operable periampullary malignancies who candidate for PPPD, randomized in two equal groups. Gastroentric reconstruction were done in two methods: antecolic and retrocolic...

UNLABELLED: Acute gastroentritis is one of the most common diseases in humans, and continues to be a significant cause of morbidity worldwide. AIMS: To determine the bacterial pathogens associated with gastroenteritis in patients admitted to the Iasi Infectious Diseases Hospital in the last ten years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 40481 stool samples were examined using conventional methods. RESULTS: Bacteria were found in 7...

A total of 276 fecal specimens collected from infants and children admitted to hospital with acute gastroenteritis in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from October 2002 to September 2003, were tested for the presence of enteroviruses by RT-PCR and virus isolation. Enteroviruses were detected in 27 patients by RT-PCR corresponding to 9.8%. However, only four enterovirus strains could be isolated by cell culture with two different cell lines CaCo2 and Vero, showing specific cytopathic effect (CPE). The results clearly indicate that RT-PCR is a sensitive, specific assay to investigate the true burden of acute gastroenteritis due to enteroviruses in clinical fecal specimens...

Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota was selected as a bacterial carrier for the development of live mucosal vaccines against coronavirus. A 75 kDa fragment of transmissible gastroenteritis coronavirus (TGEV) spike glycoprotein S was used as the model coronavirus antigen. The S glycoprotein was cloned into a Lactobacillus/E. coli shuttle vector (pLP500) where expression and secretion of the glycoprotein S from the recombinant lactobacilli was detected via immunoblotting. Oral immunization of BALB/c mice with recombinant LcS that constitutively expresses the 75 kDa fragment of the glycoprotein S, induced both local mucosal and systemic immune responses against TGEV...

We report a case of a 45 year old woman which fulfilled the criteria of chronic urticaria (remitting and relapsing bouts of erythematous and pruriginuos lesions without angioedema, lasted four months). Cutaneous manifestations were not related to a specific inducing factor, had no benefit from antihystamine and steroid drugs and were associated sometimes with mild gastroentric disorders. Patient was submitted to extensive clinical, laboratory and intrumental investigations which permit to exclude many conditions: allergy to inhalants, food, insects and drug adverse reactions, autoimmune urticaria, autoimmune diseases, neoplastic and infectious diseases...
