"7 day cycle"

Zhongbing Chen, Jan Vymazal, Peter Kuschk
Three different flow regimes were carried out in a pilot-scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland-treating sulfate rich wastewater contaminated with monochlorobenzene (MCB) and perchloroethene (PCE). The three regimes were continuous flow, 7-day cycle discontinuous flow, and 2.5-day cycle discontinuous flow. The results show that intensifying the tidal regime (2.5-day cycle) significantly enhanced MCB removal before 2 m from the inlet and increasing PCE removal efficiency at 0.5 m. The PCE dechlorination process was promoted with tidal operation, especially under the 2...

BACKGROUND: The legislation requires all scientific societies in the field of inpatient psychiatric and psychosomatic healthcare to survey and assess the effects and financial incentives of the new flat rate day-based remuneration system in psychiatric and psychosomatic facilities (PEPP system). As day-based remuneration systems may be an incentive to extend treatment, it is necessary to measure and analyze the future development of the number of cases and the duration of treatment. OBJECTIVES: This article surveys admission and discharge decisions of psychiatric and psychosomatic facilities...

Temozolomide (TMZ) is an oral alkylating agent with established effects on the central nervous system of glioblastoma (GBM) patients. Clinical trials have demonstrated a significant impact on overall survival (OS) with TMZ. Ever since, several TMZ regimens have been designed to improve treatment efficacy by increasing the cumulative dose per cycle. We report a meta-analysis to systematically evaluate different treatment schedules of TMZ in GBM patients. All searches that were conducted in the Cochrane library, Science Direct, and PubMed Databases, and 3 randomized controlled trials (1141 patients) were included...

Denture-wearing affects the quality and quantity of epithelial cells in the underlying healthy oral mucosa. The physiologic mechanisms, however, are poorly understood. This study aimed to compare histologic changes and cellular responses of an epithelial cell layer to cyclic mechanical pressure-loading mimicking denture-wearing using an organotypic culture system to develop a three-dimensional in vitro oral mucosa model (3DOMM). Primary human oral keratinocytes and fibroblasts were serially grown in a monolayer culture, and cell viability was measured under continuous cyclic mechanical pressure (50 kPa) for 7 days (cycles of 60 min on, 20 s off to degas and inject air)...

Ulcerative colitis is associated with an alteration in gonadal hormones and affects testicular weight in rodents. However, association of ulcerative colitis with testicular damage is not clearly known. Ulcerative colitis was induced using 5% (w/v) dextran sulfate sodium in normal drinking water for 1, 7-day cycle in short-term study and 2.5% (w/v) dextran sulfate sodium in normal drinking water for 4 cycles with 2 weeks remission period between each cycle in long-term study. Ulcerative colitis was associated with a significant increase in inflammation, oxidative stress, DNA damage in testes and sperm DNA damage and a significant decrease in the epididymal sperm count and 3β-HSD expression...

BACKGROUND: Olaparib, an oral PARP inhibitor, has shown antitumour activity as monotherapy in patients with germline BRCA1/2 (gBRCA)-mutated breast and ovarian cancer. This study evaluated olaparib capsules in combination with liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) in patients with advanced solid tumours (NCT00819221). METHODS: Patients received 28-day cycles of olaparib, continuously (days 1-28) or intermittently (days 1-7), plus PLD (40 mg m(-2), day 1); seven olaparib dose cohorts (50-400 mg bid) were explored to determine the recommended dose...

BACKGROUND: Colitis is a common clinical complication in chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a primary immunodeficiency caused by impaired oxidative burst. Existing experimental data from NADPH-oxidase knockout mice propose contradictory roles for the involvement of reactive oxygen species in colitis chronicity and severity. Since genetically controlled mice with a point-mutation in the Ncf1 gene are susceptible to chronic inflammation and autoimmunity, we tested whether they presented increased predisposition to develop chronic colitis...

A 63-year-old woman was suffering from HER2-positive and hormone receptor-negative breast cancer with bone metastasis. She received 16 cycles of paclitaxel(PTX 80mg/m2)plus trastuzumab(TRA 2mg/kg)on a 7-day cycle, and zoledronic acid(ZOL 4mg/body every 28 days), resulting in a near clinical complete response(cCR). Two years later, the patient complained of dizziness and nausea, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple brain metastases. The prior treatments with PTX and TRA were changed to lapatinib(LAP)(orally at 1, 250mg/day every day)and capecitabine(CAP)(orally at 2, 000mg/m2 every day for 2 weeks, followed by a 1-week rest interval as 1 cycle)because of the multiple brain metastases...

Nomegestrol acetate/estradiol is a combined oral contraceptive with approval in many countries. This fixed-dose combination tablet contains nomegestrol acetate, a highly selective progestogen, and estradiol, a natural estrogen. It is the first monophasic combined oral contraceptive to contain estradiol, and is taken in 28-day cycles, consisting of 24 active therapy days with 4 placebo days (i.e. 24/4-day cycles). In two large, 1-year, randomized, open-label, multicentre, phase III trials in healthy adult women (aged 18-50 years), nomegestrol acetate/estradiol was at least as effective as drospirenone/ethinylestradiol as contraceptive therapy, as the pregnancy rates in women aged 18-35 years (primary efficacy population) in terms of the Pearl Index (primary endpoint) were numerically lower with nomegestrol acetate/estradiol, although the between-group difference was not statistically significant...

BACKGROUND: Treatment of Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemias (Ph-positive ALL) with clinically approved inhibitors of the Bcr/Abl tyrosine kinase frequently results in the emergence of a leukemic clone carrying the T315I mutation in Bcr/Abl, which confers resistance to these drugs. PHA-739358, an Aurora kinase inhibitor, was reported to inhibit the Bcr/Abl T315I mutant in CML cells but no preclinical studies have examined this in detail in human ALL. RESULTS: We compared the sensitivity of human Bcr/Abl T315I, Bcr/Abl wild type and non-Bcr/Abl ALL cells to this drug...

BACKGROUND: Telaprevir is a hepatitis C virus protease inhibitor that is both a substrate and an inhibitor of CYP3A. STUDY DESIGN: The effect of steady-state telaprevir (administered 750 mg every 8 hours) on the steady-state pharmacokinetics of ethinyl estradiol (EE) and norethindrone (NE) was evaluated in 24 healthy women receiving oral contraceptives (OC) containing 0.5 mg NE and 0.035 mg EE for at least 3 months at the time of screening. This was a phase 1, open-label, single-center, nonrandomized study that included a cycle 1 (OC only for 21 days, followed by no OC for 7 days), cycle 2 (OC plus telaprevir for 21 days, followed by telaprevir alone for 7 days), and a follow-up period...

This paper examines the optimization of an existing two-phase anaerobic digestion process using grass silage as a feedstock. The system comprises 6 leach beds connected to an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB). The existing system produced 305 L CH(4) kg(-1) VS added at an overall retention time of 42 days (6 leach beds emptied and fed sequentially every 7 days in series). The desired improvements were a reduction in retention time with increased methane production. It was noted in the existing system that biogas production and COD levels fell off in the last 2 days of each 7-day cycle...

We report a case of Hymenolepis diminuta infection in a 2-year-old child living in a suburban area of Catania, Italy. This case was initially referred to us as Dipylidium caninum infection, which was not cured after being treated twice with mebendazole. However, by analyzing the clinical presentation and stool samples we arrived to the diagnosis of H. diminuta infection. The case presented with atypical allergic manifestations which had never been reported as clinical features of symptomatic H. diminuta infection; remittent fever with abdominal pain, diffuse cutaneous itching, transient thoracic rash, and arthromyalgias...
