Background: Molecular methods for the detection of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) are potentially more rapid than conventional culture-based drug susceptibility testing, facilitating the commencement of appropriate treatment for patients with DR-TB. The aim of this study was to evaluate and develop polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assays for the detection of mutations within rpsL , and for the determination of streptomycin (STR) resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis ...

A 37-year-old woman was re-admitted to our hospital because the recurrence of endobronchial tuberclosis was suspected. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was not detected by culture of sputum and gastric fluid, and computed tomography revealed a left superior segmental bronchus obstruction and pneumonia. Her pneumonia improved by administration of antibiotics, but the strong cough persisted. Bronchoscopic examination revealed that the left superior segmental bronchus was blind. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was not detected from a biopsy of the blind bronchus wall...

As a member of 18 glycosyl hydrolase (GH) family, chitotriosidase (Chitinase 1, CHIT1) is a true chitinase mainly expressed in the differentiated and polarized macrophages. CHIT1 is an innate immune mediator that digests the cell walls of chitin-containing eukaryotic pathogens, such as fungi. However, CHIT1 is dysregulated in granulomatous and fibrotic interstitial lung diseases characterized by inflammation and tissue remodeling. These include tuberclosis, sarcoidosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, scleroderma-associated interstitial lung diseases (SSc-ILD), and chronic obstructive lung diseases (COPD)...

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis presents in various pathological patterns. The clinical presentation and often the management depend on exact pathological findings. Objective of study was to evaluate the Pathology of spinal tuberculosis as depicted by MRI findings in 119 consecutive cases of spinal TB. METHODOLOGY: It was a cross sectional and observational study conducted at Civil Hospital, Karachi from July 2010 to December 2012.Total numbers of participants were 119...

We report a case of the coexistence of pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer maked a wrong diagnosis of lung cancer and metastatic lung carcinoma. The patient was a 80-years-old woman who had ascites and anorexia and decreased weight. Chest CT film showed a mass shadow in the right S, and infiltrative shadows on bilateral lung fields. FDG-PET revealed the tumor in the right lower lung field and many infiltrative shadows in all lung fields, and showed that FDG accumulated diffusely along the peritoneum. We made a diagnosis of lung cancer and metastatic lung carcinoma...

Fifty-four cases (36 men) with chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure were prescribed domiciliary NPPV during 9 years. COPD (26 patients) and sequelae of tuberclosis (16 patients) were the major primary diseases. At the initiation of NPPV, the age was 71.2 +/- 7.3 years-old (mean +/- standard deviation) and PaCO2 was 76.7 +/- 16.2Torr. Overall, the 1-year and 5-year survival rates were 63.8% and 26.0%, respectively. Multivariate analysis identified BMI (body mass index) (hazzard ratio : 0.837, p = 0.020) and the number of days of hospitalization during 1 year before NPPV (hazzard ratio: 1...

The effects of basic drugs of chemotherapy for tuberclosis, such as isoniazid and rifampicin, on the activity of the most important mitochondrial enzymes of lymphocytic energy metabolism were studied in patients with infiltrative tuberculosis and healthy donors. The authors detected the significantly inhibited activity of succinate dehydrogenase and the redistribution of lymphocytic populations with the increased proportion of cells with the low and high activities of the enzyme. The more significant negative effect on the lymphocytes of patients with tuberculosis was observed when rifampicin was administered...

This study was conducted to amplify the cfpl0-esat6 fusion gene by SOE and insert into the integrating shuttle plasmid pMV361 to form the recombinant plasmid. Then another recombinant plasmid was constructed by insertinga-A g signal sequence of BCG. The two recombinant plasmids were introduced into BCG and the induced products from recombinant BCG were analyzed. In conclusion, the successful construction of rBCG expressing the fusion protein CFP10-ESAT6 will be the base of the development of novel Mycobacterium tuberclosis vaccines...

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequencies of opportunistic diseases among AIDS patients at the Jeanne Ebori Foundation (JEF) in Libreville, Gabon. A total 6313 file of patients treated in the internal medicine unit between 1994 and 1998 were analyzed. Findings showed that the main diseases related to AIDS classified according to seroprevalence were as follows: purigo (100%), cerebral toxoplasmosis (100%), oral candidiaisis (88%), bacteremia (87.8%), shingles (84.6%), minor salmonelosis (72%), and tuberclosis...
