BACKGROUND: The purpose of this research is to discover whether measurement of cervical length and cervical volume at term is helpful in predicting the onset of labor in VBAC candidates. METHODS: Transvaginal sonographic evaluations of the cervixes of pregnant women who desired to undergo VBAC were performed between 36 - 40 weeks gestation. Clinical information such as labor onset time, gestational age at delivery and delivery mode was gathered from medical records...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
Brenda C Timmons, Mala Mahendroo
A greater understanding of the processes that regulate cervical remodeling during pregnancy, parturition, and the postpartum period is required to understand causes of preterm and posterm birth in which abnormal cervical function is the primary culprit. In the current study, gene expression patterns unique to cervical ripening as compared with cervical dilation and/or postpartum repair are identified in a mouse model. Genes differentially regulated from gestation day 15 to late day 18 reveal processes important for cervical ripening...

Between 1 May 1984 and 30 April 1985, 1,354 term or posterm neonates being white and having asphyxia in controlled delivery were studied to predict development of neurological signs and its seriousness. In each case correlations were estimated between the existence of neurological signs and its grade and 100 gestational, obstetric and neonatal factors of potential predictor. The discriminatory analysis indicated that the more significants predictors were: Apgar at five minutes, prolonged labor, twins, resuscitation, DIP I, cephalhematoma, caput succedaneum, umbilical artery pH, urgent cesarean section, hemorrhagic amniotic fluid, gestational edema, variable DIP, high forceps...

Posterm pregnancy still is a topic full of controversies in many aspects, such as diagnosis, perinatal risk and management. This paper suggests that a great number of fetuses from prolonged pregnancies, still grow after term, secondary to a persistent and adequate placental function; it's demonstrated, by comparing the distribution of newborn weights between term and posterm pregnancies. In the posterm group a significant increase in the incidence of hypertrophic newborns, is found. Dismature newborns, products of the placentary insufficiency in posterm pregnancy, although the point of interest of obstetricians, pediatricians and perinatologists because of its high rates of morbimortality, constitute a minority in comparison with fetus of posterm pregnancies with high newborn weights...
