OBJECTIVES: Glimepiride Orodispersable Tablets (ODT) were prepared with the goal to have rapid onset of action and higher bioavailability with ease administration to individuals with swallowing difficulty to ameliorate patient compliance. SIGNIFICANCE: Glimepiride is a contemporary hypoglycaemic medication that belongs to the family of sulfonylurea derivatives. It is used in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Compliance adherence remains one of the limitations with the conventional drug delivery system especially in paediatric, geriatric, psychiatric, and travelling patients, for such population ODT provides a good alternate dosage form compared with Commercial Tablets...

Introduction A patient suffering from diabetes mellitus (DM) has a high chance of developing a diabetic foot. Awareness and attitude toward the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers are necessary for a better quality of life. Educating patients with diabetes about the methods of foot care plays an important role in preventing diabetic foot complications in individuals with DM. This study aims to determine the level of knowledge, attitude, and practices of diabetic patients about the risk of diabetic feet in Madinah, Saudi Arabia...

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has posed an enormous global health and economic burden. To date, 324 million confirmed cases and over 5.5 million deaths have been reported. Several studies have reported comorbidities and coinfections associated with complicated and serious COVID-19 infections. Data from retrospective, prospective, case series, and case reports from various geographical locations were assessed, which included ~ 2300 COVID-19 patients with varying comorbidities and coinfection. We report that Enterobacterales with Staphylococcus aureus was the most while Mycoplasma pneumoniae was the least prevalent coinfection in COVID-19 patients with a comorbidity...

Background: Physician-pharmacist collaboration is a well-established care mode for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in developed countries, but no study has been conducted in primary healthcare in China. This study aims to evaluate the effects of physician-pharmacist collaborative clinics to manage T2DM in primary healthcare in China, and to better understand the factors influencing the implementation of physician-pharmacist collaborative clinics. Methods: Two hundred and sixty-seven patients involved in a 12-month randomized controlled trial were assigned to physician-pharmacist collaborative clinics and usual clinics, completing surveys regarding medication compliance, quality of life (QoL) and care-seeking behavior at the baseline, 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th month respectively, and diabetes knowledge at baseline and 12th month...

An increase in the severity of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was observed in patients infected with the acute severe metabolism syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Patients who have COVID-19 infection may also be more susceptible to hyperglycemia. When paired with other risk factors, hyperglycemia might alter immune and inflammatory responses, predisposing people to significant COVID-19 and perhaps deadly outcomes. Angiotensin-converting accelerator 2 (ACE2), a component of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), is the principal entry receptor for SARS-CoV-2; nevertheless, dipeptidyl enzyme 4 (DPP4) may potentially serve as a binding target...

AIMS: Glucokinase-maturity-onset diabetes of the young (GCK-MODY) is the most common monogenic diabetes in China. We have previously reported on the low levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in patients with GCK-MODY. In this study, we further explored the correlation between the serum lipid profiles and hsCRP levels of patients with different types of diabetes. We also proposed to determine the possible mechanism of macrovascular protection in GCK genetic variants. METHODS: The serum lipid profiles of the GCK-MODY group ( n  = 50) were compared with those of the hepatocyte nuclear factor-1 alpha (HNF1A)-MODY group ( n  = 19), the type 1 diabetes (T1D) group ( n  = 50), and the type 2 diabetes (T2D) group ( n  = 54)...

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) during pregnancy is rare but fatal complication. Recent incidence of pregnancy related AMI and trends in the related outcomes are unknown. The Nationwide Inpatient Sample database was utilized from years 2005 to 2014. International Classification of Disease-Ninth Revision were used to identify pregnancy related admissions and AMI. Primary outcome was incidence and trend of AMI related to pregnancy and Secondary outcomes were trends in mortality, resource utilization, and predictors of AMI during pregnancy...

The sulfonylurea urea drug glyburide (glibenclamide) is widely used for the treatment of diabetes milletus and gestational diabetes. In previous studies monohydroxylated metabolites were identified and characterized for glyburide in different species, but the metabolite owing to the loss of cyclohexyl ring was identified only in mouse. Glyburide upon incubation with hepatic microsomes resulted in 10 metabolites for human. The current study identifies new metabolites of glyburide along with the hydroxylated metabolites that were reported earlier...

Stroke, caused by either infartion or subarachnoid haemorrhage, can have devastating and debilitating effect on its victims. Traditional therapy has focused on the risk factors of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerotic heart disease and diabetes milletus. More recently, the literature has focused on smoking and the short and long term effects of cerebral blood flow. The purpose of this paper will be to review the most recent research literature on both the chronic and acute effects of smoking on the cerebral vascular system...
