Oceanic islands are exposed to plastic debris that has accumulated in the open ocean, particularly in the subtropical gyres. This study investigates the abundance and typology of microplastics (from 0.1 to 5 mm) on 19 sandy beaches spread across 8 oceanic islands of the Azores archipelago. Between January and April 2016, a total of 341 particles retrieved from all beaches, were identified as microplastics. The highest concentration (50.19 ± 21.93 particles kg-1 dw) was found in Terceira Island...

The impact of different pressure levels in the HHP-assisted hydrolysis by Alcalase of quinoa proteins on the catalytic efficiency, peptide release, phenolic compounds content, and biological activities was investigated. The protein profile (SDS-PAGE) showed a more extensive peptide breakdown for the HHP-assisted proteolysis at 300-400 MPa, which was confirmed by the higher extent of hydrolysis and peptide concentration. Quinoa protein hydrolysates (QPH) produced at 200 and 300 MPa exhibited higher total phenolic contents and antioxidant activities (methanol-acetone and aqueous extracts) when compared to the non-hydrolyzed (QPI) and non-pressurized hydrolyzed samples...

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a debilitating disease for which effective therapies are now available. Effective identification of candidates for therapy relies heavily on noninvasive imaging that must be interpreted accurately in a short timeframe. This review summarizes the evolution of AIS therapies and the implications for noninvasive imaging. The review concludes with consideration of longstanding assumptions about imaging of ischemic stroke and potential paradigm shifts on the horizon.

Background and study aims In 2019, the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) created a working group to develop technical and quality standards for small-bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) to improve the daily practice of endoscopy services. They developed 10 quality parameters, which have yet to be tested in a real-life setting. Our study aimed to evaluate the accomplishment of the quality standards in SBCE established by the ESGE in several Spanish centers. Materials and methods An online survey of 11 multiple-choice questions related to the ESGE performance measures was sent to Spanish centers with experience in SBCE...

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a tick-borne zoonotic orthonairovirus of public health concern and widespread geographic distribution. Several animal species are known to seroconvert after infection with CCHFV without showing clinical symptoms. The commercial availability of a multi-species ELISA has led to an increase in recent serosurveillance studies as well as in the range of species reported to be exposed to CCHFV in the field, including wild boar (Sus scrofa). However, development and validation of confirmatory serological tests for swine based on different CCHFV antigens or test principles are hampered by the lack of defined control sera from infected and non-infected animals...

Microsporum canis is a widely distributed dermatophyte, which is among the main etiological agents of dermatophytosis in humans and domestic animals. This fungus invades, colonizes and nourishes itself on the keratinized tissues of the host through various virulence factors. This review will bring together the known information about the mechanisms, enzymes and their associated genes relevant to the pathogenesis processes of the fungus and will provide an overview of those virulence factors that should be better studied to establish effective methods of prevention and control of the disease...

Cured meat products constitute one of the meat categories commonly consumed in Ireland and has been part of the Irish cuisine and diet for many years. Ham, gammon, and bacon are some of the products that involve curing as part of the traditional processing methods. Common among these products are high levels of salt and the addition of nitrites. These products undergo processing treatments to create variety, preserve shelf-life, and develop their unique quality and safety characteristics. However, consumers are becoming more conscious of the level of processing involved in these products, and the effects of some components and ingredients might be perceived as unhealthy...

UNLABELLED: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. The etiology of IBD remains elusive, but the disease is suggested to arise from the interaction of environmental and genetic factors that trigger inadequate immune responses and inflammation in the intestine. The gut microbiome majorly contributes to disease as an environmental variable, and although some causative bacteria are identified, little is known about which specific members of the microbiome aid in the intestinal epithelial barrier function to protect from disease...

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has set forth Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) to help guide management of closed, displaced distal radius fractures (DRFs). There still exists variation in practice regarding operative vs nonoperative decision-making. This study aims to identify which factors influence the decision to treat DRFs not indicated for surgery by the CPGs after initial closed reduction. METHODS: Fifteen sets of DRFs and clinical vignettes were distributed via email to over 75 orthopedic residency programs, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and New York Society for Surgery of the Hand membership...

Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a prevalent medical condition with potentially severe consequences if left untreated. While surgical removal has traditionally been the standard approach for treatment, middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization has emerged as a promising minimally invasive alternative to reduce recurrences. This comprehensive review provides the general radiology community with an overview of MMA embolization as a therapeutic option for managing CSDH. The authors base their insights on existing evidence and their institutional experience...

Pathogenic variants of the SOHLH1 gene are responsible for an autosomal recessive form of ovarian dysgenesis; this gene encodes a transcription factor expressed early in spermatogonia and oocytes and contributes to folliculogenesis. Previously, four affected women from two unrelated families reported homozygous variants in the SOHLH1 gene, but none had a history of gonadal malignancy or a histologic description. We present two sisters and their paternal great-aunt with a history of primary amenorrhea, pubertal delay, and hypergonadotrophism who came from an inbred Mexican family...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In phase 2 studies, efruxifermin, an Fc-FGF21 analog, significantly reduced steatohepatitis and fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), now called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), for which there is no approved treatment. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity are prevalent among patients with MASH and increasingly treated with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs). This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of efruxifermin in patients with MASH, fibrosis, and T2D taking a GLP-1RA...

BACKGROUND: The recent Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has dramatically exposed our gap in understanding the pathogenesis of airborne infections. Within such a context, it is increasingly clear that the nasal cavity represents a critical checkpoint not only in the initial colonization phase but also in shaping any infectious sequelae . This is particularly relevant to COVID-19 in that the nasal cavity is characterized by high-level expression of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) receptor, Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2), all along the respiratory tract...
