Biliary cancers include gallbladder cancer (GBC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). GBC may appear as a mass replacing the gallbladder, thickened gallbladder wall, or polypoid lesion in the gallbladder. Gallbladder polyps with low risk of GBC (eg, 6- to 10-mm polyps without other risk factors) are screened with sonography. In general, polyps smaller than 5 mm are ignored and those larger than 10 mm require surgical consideration. Screening for CCA is less well-established. On imaging, CCA may be divided into mass-forming, periductal infiltrating, and intraductal types...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Most cases of colorectal cancer develop via an adenoma to carcinoma sequence. Gallbladder polyps share some risk factors with colorectal polyps. Little is known about the relationship between gallbladder diseases and different status of colorectal polyps by gender. This study was to investigate the association of gallbladder stones and polyps with colorectal adenomas by gender in a Taiwanese population. METHODS: We recruited 7,066 eligible subjects who underwent a total colonoscopy as a part of health check-up between Jan 2001 and August 2009...

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Gallbladder polyps (GBPs) are found in 5-7% of the adult population. However, it is very important to differentiate between benign and malignant polyps to establish an appropriate treatment. The present study aimed to determine the relevance of the 10-mm size criterion and attempted to determine the cut-off diameter of T1b tumours, which requires additional surgical intervention. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cases with GBPs were collected between January 2005 and January 2015...

BACKGROUND: Incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC) is found in 0.3-1.5% of cholecystectomy specimens. GBC is uncommon with significant variation amongst geographical regions and ethnic groups. Less than 100 GBC's have been reported in sub Saharan Africa, hence the need for this national audit in South Africa. METHOD: National data was obtained from the South African NHLS for 2003-2015. 34 294 cholecystectomy specimens were included of which 239 were GBCs; 135 were iGBC...

Gallbladder polypoid-lesions (GPs) are found in 5-10% of the general population. Although the majority of GPs are asymptomatic and benign in nature, some of them can develop into cancer, which carries a poor prognosis. Currently, the risk factors, natural history and classification of GPs remain unclear, differentiation of benign from malignant or premalignant GPs based on available diagnostic modalities and/or features of patients and GPs remain difficult, and there are still no evidence-based guidelines to dictate when and how GPs of varying sizes and subtypes should be managed...

GOAL: To provide the statistical predictive model for neoplastic potential of gallbladder polyp (GBP). BACKGROUND: Many studies have attempted to define the risk factors for neoplastic potential of GBP. It remains difficult to precisely adapt the reported risk factors for the decision of surgery. Estimating the probability for neoplastic potential of GBP using a combination of several risk factors before surgical resection would be useful in patient consultation...

Asymptomatic patients with gallstones typically do not require treatment. Surgical intervention is indicated in most symptomatic patients with gallstones. For patients with uncomplicated cholecystitis, laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed within 24 hours of admission is associated with significantly decreased morbidity, hospital length of stay, and cost. Most gallbladder polyps are found incidentally during ultrasonography. Patients with gallbladder polyps are at increased risk of malignant transformation if they are older than 50 years; the gallbladder wall is thickened; or the polyp is adenomatous, solitary, larger than 10 mm, sessile in appearance, or has a rapid increase in size...

A 50-year-old man had undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy for malignant lymphoma 1 year earlier. Follow-up computed tomography revealed a gallbladder polyp. Transabdominal ultrasound demonstrated a 20-mm hypoechoic sessile polyp with basal waist in the gallbladder fundus; the surface was covered with a hyperechoic layer of non-uniform thickness. On contrast-enhanced computed tomography, the polyp showed an early uniform and sustained staining pattern. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed that the polyp had low and slightly high signal intensities on T1- and T2-weighted imaging, respectively...
