Asymptomatic patients with gallstones typically do not require treatment. Surgical intervention is indicated in most symptomatic patients with gallstones. For patients with uncomplicated cholecystitis, laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed within 24 hours of admission is associated with significantly decreased morbidity, hospital length of stay, and cost. Most gallbladder polyps are found incidentally during ultrasonography. Patients with gallbladder polyps are at increased risk of malignant transformation if they are older than 50 years; the gallbladder wall is thickened; or the polyp is adenomatous, solitary, larger than 10 mm, sessile in appearance, or has a rapid increase in size...

A 50-year-old man had undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy for malignant lymphoma 1 year earlier. Follow-up computed tomography revealed a gallbladder polyp. Transabdominal ultrasound demonstrated a 20-mm hypoechoic sessile polyp with basal waist in the gallbladder fundus; the surface was covered with a hyperechoic layer of non-uniform thickness. On contrast-enhanced computed tomography, the polyp showed an early uniform and sustained staining pattern. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed that the polyp had low and slightly high signal intensities on T1- and T2-weighted imaging, respectively...

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder cancer is a rare neoplasm with a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis and correct treatment strategy is important. The aim of this study was to identify predictors for incidental gallbladder cancer. METHODS: Data from cholecystectomies registered in the nationwide Swedish Register for Gallstone Surgery between 2007 and 2014 were analyzed for incidental gallbladder cancer. Exclusion criteria were patients with a gallbladder not sent for histopathology, preoperative suspicion of polyps/gallbladder cancer, and indication for operation for other reasons than gallstone disease...

The gallbladder polyps are a common finding during ultrasonography but only in rare cases they may be a cancer. When a polyp is greater than 1 cm, the cholecystectomy is usually performed. In these images, a polyp of 4 cm corresponding to a collection of mucus (mucocele) is reported. This unusual polyp of the gallbladder was caused by heterotopic intestinal mucosa.

OBJECTIVES: The management of incidentally detected gallbladder polyps on radiological examinations is contentious. The incidental radiological finding of a gallbladder polyp can therefore be problematic for the radiologist and the clinician who referred the patient for the radiological examination. To address this a joint guideline was created by the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR), European Association for Endoscopic Surgery and other Interventional Techniques (EAES), International Society of Digestive Surgery - European Federation (EFISDS) and European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE)...

Near-infrared fluorescent cholangiography (NIRFC) is an emerging technique for easy intraoperative recognition of biliary anatomy. We present a case of cystic duct variation detected by NIRFC which had a potential risk for biliary injury if not detected. A 32-year-old female was admitted to the Seoul St. Mary's Hospital for surgery for an incidental gallbladder polyp. We performed laparoscopic cholecystectomy with NIRFC. In fluorescence mode, a long cystic duct and an accessory short hepatic duct joining to the cystic duct were found and the operation was completed safely...

The most common causes of chronic cholestatic liver disease are primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Both disease processes are characterized by a destruction of intrahepatic and/or extrahepatic biliary ducts. The etiology is not entirely clear; however, there is an underlying autoimmune component contributing to both disease processes. Although PBC and PSC are often diagnosed and managed in the outpatient setting, in some instances, a patient may have jaundice, fatigue, and pruritus requiring evaluation and determination of the cholestatic cause...

We report a case of two peculiar gallbladder polyps in a sixty-four year old male who presented with symptomatic cholelithiasis. Cholecystectomy was performed, which revealed two polyps measuring 0.6 cm and 1.9 cm, located in the body of the gallbladder. Microscopic examination of the polyps showed composite mesenchymal lesions with vascular proliferation of small-to-medium sized arterioles, myoid stroma, and lipomatous periphery. The myoid component was characterized by wisps of bland smooth muscle fibers loosely separated by proteinaceous and focally myxoid matrix...
