BACKGROUND: Incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC) is found in 0.3-1.5% of cholecystectomy specimens. GBC is uncommon with significant variation amongst geographical regions and ethnic groups. Less than 100 GBC's have been reported in sub Saharan Africa, hence the need for this national audit in South Africa. METHOD: National data was obtained from the South African NHLS for 2003-2015. 34 294 cholecystectomy specimens were included of which 239 were GBCs; 135 were iGBC...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of ex vivo multispectral photoacoustic (PA) imaging in differentiating cholesterol versus neoplastic polyps, and benign versus malignant polyps, of the gallbladder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 38 surgically confirmed gallbladder polyps (24 cholesterol polyps, 4 adenomas, and 10 adenocarcinomas) from 38 patients were prospectively included in this study. The surgical specimens were set on a gel pad immersed in a saline-filled container...

Gallbladder polypoid-lesions (GPs) are found in 5-10 % of the general population. Although the majority of GPs are asymptomatic and benign in nature, some of them can develop into cancer, which carries a poor prognosis. Currently, the risk factors, natural history and classification of GPs remain unclear, differentiation of benign from malignant or premalignant GPs based on available diagnostic modalities and/or features of patients and GPs remain difficult, and there are still no evidence-based guidelines to dictate when and how GPs of varying sizes and subtypes should be managed...

OBJECTIVE: As there is continuing disagreement among the observers on the differential diagnosis between the epithelial changes/lesions and neoplasms of the gallbladder, this multicentre study was planned in order to assess the rate of the epithelial gallbladder lesions in Turkey and to propose microscopy and macroscopy protocols. MATERIAL AND METHOD: With the participation of 22 institutions around Turkey that were included in the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Study Group, 89,324 cholecystectomy specimens sampled from 2003 to 2016 were retrospectively evaluated...

GOAL: To provide the statistical predictive model for neoplastic potential of gallbladder polyp (GBP). BACKGROUND: Many studies have attempted to define the risk factors for neoplastic potential of GBP. It remains difficult to precisely adapt the reported risk factors for the decision of surgery. Estimating the probability for neoplastic potential of GBP using a combination of several risk factors before surgical resection would be useful in patient consultation...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gallbladder polypoid-lesions (GPs) are commonly seen on ultrasonography (USG), but several aspects of this problem are ill-defined. This study aimed to analyze clinic and pathologic characteristics of 1446 USG-detected GPs, identify predictive factors for cholesterol lesions and malignancy, and provide comments and recommendations on specific aspects of GPs. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinic files of 1446 patients who underwent cholecystectomy for USG-detected GPs between 2008 and 2015 in Gallbladder Diseases Center, East Hospital of Tongji University...

OBJECTIVES: To assess important features for risk stratification of gallbladder (GB) polyps >10 mm using high-resolution ultrasonography (HRUS) and texture analysis. METHODS: We included 136 patients with GB polyps (>10 mm) who underwent both HRUS and cholecystectomy (non-neoplastic, n = 58; adenomatous, n = 32; and carcinoma, n = 46). Two radiologists retrospectively assessed HRUS findings and texture analysis. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify significant predictors for neoplastic polyps and carcinomas...

Asymptomatic patients with gallstones typically do not require treatment. Surgical intervention is indicated in most symptomatic patients with gallstones. For patients with uncomplicated cholecystitis, laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed within 24 hours of admission is associated with significantly decreased morbidity, hospital length of stay, and cost. Most gallbladder polyps are found incidentally during ultrasonography. Patients with gallbladder polyps are at increased risk of malignant transformation if they are older than 50 years; the gallbladder wall is thickened; or the polyp is adenomatous, solitary, larger than 10 mm, sessile in appearance, or has a rapid increase in size...

A 50-year-old man had undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy for malignant lymphoma 1 year earlier. Follow-up computed tomography revealed a gallbladder polyp. Transabdominal ultrasound demonstrated a 20-mm hypoechoic sessile polyp with basal waist in the gallbladder fundus; the surface was covered with a hyperechoic layer of non-uniform thickness. On contrast-enhanced computed tomography, the polyp showed an early uniform and sustained staining pattern. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed that the polyp had low and slightly high signal intensities on T1- and T2-weighted imaging, respectively...

AIM: To evaluate a laparoscopic approach to gallbladder lesions including polyps, wall-thickening lesions, and suspected T1 and T2 gallbladder cancer (GBC). METHODS: We performed 50 cases of laparoscopic whole-layer cholecystectomy (LCWL) and 13 cases of laparoscopic gallbladder bed resection (LCGB) for those gallbladder lesions from April 2010 to November 2016. We analyzed the short-term and long-term results of our laparoscopic approach. RESULTS: The median operation time was 108 min for LCWL and 211 min for LCGB...

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder cancer is a rare neoplasm with a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis and correct treatment strategy is important. The aim of this study was to identify predictors for incidental gallbladder cancer. METHODS: Data from cholecystectomies registered in the nationwide Swedish Register for Gallstone Surgery between 2007 and 2014 were analyzed for incidental gallbladder cancer. Exclusion criteria were patients with a gallbladder not sent for histopathology, preoperative suspicion of polyps/gallbladder cancer, and indication for operation for other reasons than gallstone disease...

METHODS: The pooled data for analysis were collected from the case of metastatic RCC to gallbladder encountered by our institution along with sporadic cases reported in literature from 1991 to 2015. RESULTS: A total of 50 cases of metastatic RCC to gallbladder were recruited for study...

The gallbladder polyps are a common finding during ultrasonography but only in rare cases they may be a cancer. When a polyp is greater than 1 cm, the cholecystectomy is usually performed. In these images, a polyp of 4 cm corresponding to a collection of mucus (mucocele) is reported. This unusual polyp of the gallbladder was caused by heterotopic intestinal mucosa.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Distinguishing between neoplastic and nonneoplastic gallbladder polyps (GBPs) in the preoperative workup is of great importance for appropriate treatment. The present study aimed to investigate the characteristics of GBPs and to determine potential predictive factors of neoplastic polyps. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data of 278 patients who were confirmed to have GBPs through laparoscopic cholecystectomy were retrospectively analyzed. Polyps were classified as nonneoplastic and neoplastic GBPs, according to histopathological diagnoses...

OBJECTIVES: The management of incidentally detected gallbladder polyps on radiological examinations is contentious. The incidental radiological finding of a gallbladder polyp can therefore be problematic for the radiologist and the clinician who referred the patient for the radiological examination. To address this a joint guideline was created by the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR), European Association for Endoscopic Surgery and other Interventional Techniques (EAES), International Society of Digestive Surgery - European Federation (EFISDS) and European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE)...
