INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Idiopathic Sclerosing Encapsulating Peritonitis (ISEP) is an uncommon condition of intestinal bowel obstruction due to encapsulation of the abdominal organs in a thick fibro-collagenous membrane. The case presented here describes the emergency acute presentation of septic peritonitis discovered intraoperatively upon laparotomy. CASE PRESENTATION: A middle-aged woman was admitted to the emergency department and presented with generalized colicky abdominal pain associated with repetitive vomiting, abdominal distention, and absolute constipation...

Primary sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (PSEP), also known as abdominal cocoon syndrome, is a rare condition characterized by small bowel encapsulation by a fibrous membrane or a cocoon-like sac. It is an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction, as less than 300 cases have been reported from all over the world. We present the case of a 57-year-old male patient who presented with acute abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and constipation. A trial of conservative management failed, which warranted surgical intervention...

We focus on the morphology of the "segmental glands" and their openings in third instar Stenus larvae. The location of the openings was similar in both studied species, with paired rosette-like structures present on the head, all thoracic segments and abdominal segments 1-9. No such openings could be found on the antennae, the maxillary palps, the urogomphi, and the legs as suggested in some older publications. We presume that the glands up to abdominal segment 7 are "adhesive" glands. They are compound glandular units consisting of a secretory syncytium with a common reservoir and a canal cell...

Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) is a rare disease. Preoperative diagnosis of SEP can be made with imaging, such as computed tomography (CT). SEP is characterized by a partial or complete encasement of the small intestine by a layer of a thick grayish-white fibro collagenous membrane similar to an abdominal cocoon. The most common symptoms of SEP are abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. This rare disease often leads to acute or sub-acute intestinal obstruction. We discuss, in this report, how we managed a case of primary sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis with Meckel's diverticulum at our institution...

Lasiocampidae belongs to superfamily Lasiocampoidea and contains more than a thousand species nearly distributed worldwide. Despite the great species richness and wide distribution, this group has internal phylogenetic relationships still little explored and with few studies on the morphology and biology of its immatures. This study describes the immature stages of the neotropical species Tolype medialis (Jones, 1912), focusing on the morphology and natural history. The eggs of T. medialis are oviposited freely inside a conical structure, and the larvae showed gregarious behavior in all instars...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) is a disease characterized by a chronic inflammatory process in which the small intestines are encased by a dense fibrocollagenous membrane. In this article, we report a 57 year old male who presented with bowel obstruction secondary to sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis with an initial imaging suggesting internal hernia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old male, who presented to the emergency department at our center with a chronic persistent nausea and vomiting, associated with anorexia, constipation and weight loss, CT scan showed a transition zone seen at the duodeno-jejunal (DJ) junction and findings suggesting internal hernia, he was treated conservatively initially followed by a diagnostic laparoscopy that was converted to open with intraoperative findings of intra-abdominal cocoon rather than an internal hernia, managed with adhesolysis and discharged home in stable good condition...

UNLABELLED: Primary sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP), commonly known as abdominal cocoon syndrome (ACS), is considered to be one of the rare causes of intestinal obstruction. This syndrome is characterized by the formation of a fibrous-collagenous membrane that encapsulates the intestine and other abdominal organs. Several theories have been proposed to explain the disease's etiology. Patients often present with symptoms of partial intestinal obstruction, which is challenging to diagnose before laparotomy...

Abdominal cocoon syndrome is defined as idiopathic encapsulation of the bowel within a fibrocollagenous membrane and is considered as a rare cause of small bowel obstruction. A 15-year-old female presented complaining of right lower abdominal pain, distension and vomiting for 24 hours with previous similar attacks in the last four years. She had no another significant medical or surgical history. Computed tomography study revealed matted mildly distended bowel loops centrally with a suspicion of acute appendicitis...

BACKGROUND: Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a congenital condition wherein organs in abdominal or thoracic cavity are mirrored from their normal positions. Abdominal cocoon, is a rare disease of unknown aetiology that is characterised by total or partial small intestine encapsulation by a compact fibrocollagenous membrane. Aside from having two extremely rare conditions (SIT and Abdominal cocoon), our patient developed renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which makes this case even more uncommon...

Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP), also referred to as abdominal cocoon syndrome, is a rare cause of bowel obstruction characterized by a thickened fibrous peritoneum that encapsulates the intestines. The exact etiology is idiopathic but may be associated with long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD). In the absence of risk factors for adhesive disease, preoperative diagnosis can be difficult and may require operative intervention or advanced imaging to diagnose. Thus, the inclusion of SEP in the differential diagnosis for bowel obstruction is essential for early detection...

Peritoneal adhesions, a common postoperative complication of laparotomy, are still treated with physical barriers, but their efficacy and ease of use are controversial. In this paper, we developed a wound microenvironment-responsive hydrogel composed of Antheraea pernyi silk protein (ASF) from wild cocoons and tyramine-modified hyaluronic acid (HA-Ph) loaded with azithromycin (AZI), glucose oxidase (GOX), and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In addition, GOX-catalyzed oxygen production enhanced the antibacterial ability of the hydrogel...

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) frequently present with inflammatory episodes, and during flared inflammatory episodes, hematopoietic function is further exacerbated. The gastrointestinal tract is the most common site for infectious and inflammatory diseases, and its structural and functional features confer on it the most potent capacity to affect hematopoietic and immune functions. Computed tomography (CT) is a readily accessible approach to provide highly useful information in detecting morphological changes and guiding further work-ups...

A transmesenteric internal hernia (TIH) is a protrusion of a viscus through the mesenteric defect. It is secondary to previous gastrointestinal surgery in an adult. Early diagnosis and management are warranted to prevent the strangulation of the bowel in a TIH. Here, we are reporting a case of a 24-year-old gentleman with COVID-positive status who has presented with cough, abdominal cocoon, and features of subacute intestinal obstruction (SAIO) without any previous history of abdominal surgery. A nonoperative trial is given in the management of abdominal cocoon with SAIO...

Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis is a rare chronic inflammatory condition often with unknown origins. We report a case of an abdominal cocoon or sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis, which was suspected to be a result of bowel obstruction. Tuberculosis peritonitis was also suspected. However, the exact diagnosis was unclear, and it was diagnosed as an idiopathic abdominal cocoon. The patient's history is of clear relevance in this diagnosis, and this report will be of interest to clinicians attending to cases of bowel obstruction...

Congenital peritoneal encapsulation (CPE) is a rare, congenital entity in which an accessory peritoneal membrane surrounds the small bowel. This condition is usually asymptomatic and rarely causes intestinal obstruction. Despite the rare cause of intestinal obstruction, it has excellent post-operative recovery. There is no gold standard approach for investigating CPE; however, a computerized tomography scan of the abdomen might be helpful. Furthermore, diagnostic laparoscopy could be considered an adjunct...

Baicalein (BA) is a flavonoid with wide-ranging pharmacological activity. However, its biological evaluation is hampered by its low solubility in aqueous medium, making forms of incorporation that improve its solubility necessary. In the present study, BA was combined with a solution of silk fibroin protein (SF), a biomaterial used too as a drug carrier, to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of this combination, in vivo, in an experimental model, zebrafish (Danio rerio). Baicalein-silk fibroin (BASF) improved the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) free radical scavenging rate (95%) in comparison with BA in solution...
