Complex samples benefit from multidimensional measurements where higher resolution enables more complete characterization of biological and environmental systems. To address this challenge, we developed a drift tube-based ion mobility spectrometry-Orbitrap mass spectrometer (IMS-Orbitrap MS) platform. To circumvent the time scale disparity between the fast IMS separation and the much slower Orbitrap MS acquisition, we utilized a dual gate and pseudorandom sequences to multiplex the injection of ions and allow operation in signal averaging (SA), single multiplexing (SM), and double multiplexing (DM) IMS modes to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio of the measurements...

The tiger beetles (Carabidae: Cicindelinae) include about 2,822 species and 120 genera around the world. They are one of the most widely studied families of Coleoptera. However, the knowledge about their immature stages is incipient and usually restricted to the larval stages. Pupal characteristics have been among the most ignored aspects of tiger beetle biology. Here we compile and update the current knowledge of tiger beetle pupae.

BACKGROUND: Bentazon is a widely used herbicide in rice agroecosystems that has commonly been found in water resources. To assess how tillage and water regimes impact the sorption-desorption, dissipation, and leaching of bentazon in Mediterranean rice growing conditions, field experiments were carried out using tillage and flooding (TF), tillage and sprinkler irrigation (TS), no-tillage and sprinkler irrigation (NTS), and long-term no-tillage and sprinkler irrigation (NTS7). RESULTS: After three years, the Kd values in TS were 2...

: 2 Background: In FY 2012, Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) established a palliative care inpatient unit (PCU). The PCU received patients as transfers and direct admissions. PCUs can improve care (Roza K, et al. JPM 2015) and lower per diem costs compared to usual care (Smith TJ, et al. JPM 2003; Goldstein J, et al. JPSM 2015). This project studied the financial impact of the PCU and PC program on JHM. METHODS: Using one fiscal year of admissions, the team calculated the per day variable cost of pre-transfer in to palliative care (from ED) and palliative care transfer...

The bacteria isolated from Hymeniacidon heliophila sponge cells showed bioleaching activity. The most active strain, Hyhel-1, identified as Bacillus sp., was selected for bioleaching tests under two different temperatures, 30°C and 40°C, showing rod-shaped cells and filamentous growth, respectively. At 30°C, the bacteria secreted substances which linked to the leached copper, and at 40°C metallic nanoparticles were produced inside the cells. In addition, infrared analysis detected COOH groups and linear peptides in the tested bacteria at both temperatures...

Left ventricular assist device implantation disrupts the natural intracavitary blood flow path through the heart, introducing flow patterns potentially associated with thrombosis, especially around the inflow cannula. We describe a novel technique for completely excluding the left ventricle with an assist device by using a cone shaped ring-reinforced prosthesis.

Understanding the biological roles and mechanisms of lipids and glycolipids is challenging due to the vast number of possible isomers that may exist. Mass spectrometry (MS) measurements are currently the dominant approach for studying and providing detailed information on lipid and glycolipid presence and changes. However, difficulties in distinguishing the many structural isomers, due to the distinct lipid acyl chain positions, double bond locations or specific glycan types, inhibit the delineation and assignment of their biological roles...

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve-in-valve implantation (TAVI-ViV) is an evolving treatment strategy for degenerated surgical aortic valve bioprostheses (SAVBs). However, there is some concern regarding coronary obstruction, especially after TAVI-ViV in calcified SAVBs with externally mounted leaflets. We investigated in vitro coronary flow and hydrodynamics after TAVI-ViV using 2 modern SAVBs with externally and internally mounted leaflets. METHODS: Aortic root models including known risk factors for coronary obstruction served for the implantation of SAVBs with either externally mounted leaflets (St Jude Trifecta, size 25) or internally mounted leaflets (Edwards Perimount Magna Ease, size 25)...

Biomechanical analysis of pelvic floor dysfunction requires knowledge of certain biomechanical parameters, such as muscle fiber direction, in order to adequately model function. Magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides an estimate of overall muscle fiber directionality based on the mathematical description of water diffusivity. This work aimed at evaluating the concurrence between pubovisceralis muscle fiber representations obtained from DTI, and the maximum principal stress lines obtained through the finite element method...

Resveratrol (RSV) has been shown to effectively suppress chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in a mouse model; however, when locally administered to the sinonasal cavity, bolus RSV is limited by low drug bioavailability owing to its low aqueous solubility and relatively rapid clearance from the administration site. To address this limitation, we propose mucoadhesive nanostructured microparticles (PLGA/PEG NM) as a potential carrier for the sinonasal delivery of RSV. In this study, PLGA/PEG NM released RSV in a sustained manner...

Semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) catalyses oxidative deamination of primary amines. Since there is no data about its function in pain and arthritis mechanisms, we investigated the effects of our novel SSAO inhibitor SzV-1287 in chronic mouse models of joint inflammation. Effects of SzV-1287 (20 mg/kg i.p./day) were investigated in the K/BxN serum-transfer and complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-evoked active immunization models compared to the reference SSAO inhibitor LJP-1207. Mechanonociception was assessed by aesthesiometry, oedema by plethysmometry, clinical severity by scoring, joint function by grid test, myeloperoxidase activity by luminescence, vascular leakage by fluorescence in vivo imaging, histopathological changes by semiquantitative evaluation, and cytokines by Luminex assay...

Mesenchymal stroma cells (MSCs) have potential as an emerging cell therapy for treating many different diseases, but discovery of the practical sources of MSCs is needed for the large-scale clinical application of this therapy. This study was to identify MSCs in peritoneal dialysis (PD) effluents that were discarded after PD. The effluents were collected from patients who were on the dialysis for less than 1 month. Adherent cells from the effluents were isolated by incubation in serum-containing medium in plastic culture dishes...
