Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) is an orphan disease of clonal dendritic cells which may affect any organ of the body. Most of the knowledge about the diagnosis and therapy is based on pedriatic studies. Adult LCH patients are often evaluated by physicians who focus on only the most obviously affected organ without sufficient evaluation of other systems, resulting in patients being underdiagnosed and/or incompletely staged. Furthermore they may be treated with pediatric-based therapies which are less effective and sometimes more toxic for adults...

PURPOSE: To assess factors associated with myopia in school children in rural and urban parts of Greater Beijing. METHODS: The Beijing Pedriatic Eye Study was a population-based cross-sectional study, in which one school of each level (primary, junior high, senior high) was randomly selected from nine randomly selected districts out of 18 districts of Greater Beijing. The children underwent non-cylcoplegic refractometry and their parents an interview. RESULTS: Of 16,771 eligible students, 15,066 (89...

Malignant tumors of mesenchimal origin such as rhabdomyosarcoma and osteosarcoma are highly aggressive pedriatic malignancies with a poor prognosis. Indeed, the initial response to chemotherapy is followed by chemoresistance. Diallyl disulfide (DADS), resveratrol (RES) and curcumin (CUR) are dietary chemopreventive phytochemicals which have been reported to have antineoplastic activity on rhabdomyosarcoma and osteosarcoma cells as single drugs. In this study we evaluated whether, as compared to the single compounds, the combination of DADS+RES, DADS+CUR and RES+CUR resulted in an enhancement of their antitumor potential on malignant rhabdoid (SJ-RH4, RD/18) or osteosarcoma (Saos-2) cell lines...

PURPOSE: The objective of this article is to highlight the fact that cerebral aneurysms in children are heterogeneous unlike in the adult population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective review of 17 children with intracranial aneurysms who were managed at a single institution from 2004 to 2009. RESULTS: The median age was 12 years (range 10 months-17 years). Sixty-five percent of the aneurysms were saccular and 24% were fusiform...

BACKGROUND: Retinal microvascular abnormalities associated with multiorgan disease may be observed in a number of systemic illnesses and syndromes. PATIENTS: Two sisters with identical signs of a hereditary cerebroretinal vasculopathy (occlusive retinal angiopathy--cerebral vasculopathy--microcephalus) were treated at the University Hospital of Saarland. COURSE: Photocoagulation for treatment of neovascular complications secondary to retinal ischemia was performed...

Cytopathological findings on three pedriatic gonadic-extragonadic pure yolk sac tumor are reported: the highly variable histological patterns (reticular, solid, festooning or pseudopapillary, polyvesicular vitelline), reflecting differentiation towards extraembryonic yolk sac structures, are not appreciated in cytologic samples. Since the tumor's cytologic spectrum is very broad, the most diagnostic differential difficulty with yolk sac tumor is adenocarcinoma. The presence of intracellular and extracellular hyaline globules, that are periodic acid-Schiff stain (PAS) positive and diastase resistant and correspond to alpha-fetoprotein production, alpha-fetoprotein positivity of the neoplastic cells; showing nuclear pleomorphism and vacuolated "bubbly" cytoplasm are the most consistent cytologic hallmarks of this neoplasm, which diagnosis would be confirmed by histologic, immunocytochemical and clinical findings...
