A child's illness and admission in a hospital are stressful and can negatively affect the child and his/her caregivers. The stress is further exacerbated when a child is critically ill and has been admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). The effects can be reduced when caregivers of the sick children are present and involved in decision making and actual care of their hospitalized children, a care model called family-centered care. Malawi has adopted family-centered care model in the newly instituted Mercy James Pediatric ICU...

This article presents the findings of a service evaluation on the role of the youth worker offered to young people in the hospital setting across the United Kingdom and what differentiates the role of the youth worker from other health-care professionals, as described by young people, parents, and members of the existing multidisciplinary team. Young people, parents, and members of multidisciplinary teams were approached by a youth worker in the hospital regarding the purpose of the evaluation and the online survey relating to their views and experiences of working with a youth worker in the hospital setting...

A partnership between a nursing program and a rural obstetric office provided education to pregnant and postpartum women about coping with infant crying and the dangers of shaking a baby. Undergraduate nursing students delivered the Period of PURPLE Crying ( PURPLE ) educational program to 148 mothers. Change in knowledge about infant crying and the community clinical experience was evaluated. Pre and post intervention data were collected. Descriptive statistics indicated higher scores on mothers' posttest for knowledge about normal newborn crying behaviors and coping strategies...

Acquiring information about one's child's cancer diagnosis is a complex and ever-changing process, and parents' needs change over time. As yet, we know little about what information parents require at different stages of their child's illness. This paper is part of a larger randomized control trial studying the parent-centered information given to mothers and fathers. The aim of this paper was to describe the topics addressed in person-centered meetings between nurses and parents of children with cancer and how those changed over time...

This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between lifelong learning perceptions of pediatric nurses and self-confidence and anxiety in clinical decision-making processes. One of the most important ways to adapt to change in the developing and changing health care environment worldwide and in evidence based nursing care is lifelong learning. The most essential characteristics of a lifelong learner are reflection, questioning, enjoying learning, understanding the dynamic nature of knowledge and engaging in learning by actively seeking learning opportunities so that evidence-based nursing care can be achieved...

To explore a notion of busyness within the context of pediatric acute care and how this influences the therapeutic relationship, nursing activities and teamwork between pediatric nurses and families. Ethnography was the research design. Semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation were used for data collection, which was undertaken in a level four pediatric inpatient unit in Sydney, New South Wales Australia. Brewer's (2000) ethnographic framework for analysis and interpretation was utilized and findings are presented as a realist tale...

Children's nurses in African pediatric settings are often responsible for leading practice improvements. There is a shortage of contextually relevant guidance to inform the design of practice improvement projects in African care settings. Distinctive features of children's nursing practice in Africa include high levels of family caregiver involvement, and organizational and professional cultures which value participation. While established practice improvement methods offer many strengths, methods developed in other geographies should not be adopted uncritically...

Children and young people (CYP) can be empowered to take on roles as agents of change in their own communities. CYP want to be heard and should be actively involved in the co-production, design and development of services aimed at them to ensure that the resulting services are acceptable and accessible. Little analysis of the framing and discourse of co-production in different contexts has been undertaken.Building on Children's Advocacy Center models from the United States of America (which are held in high esteem by local communities), there is perceived value of such a center in the UK...

The sudden, unexpected death of a child (SUDC) is a devastating experience. It is vital that supportive and investigative services are effective and promote the best outcomes for families. Analysis of 5 years of data from 309 SUDC cases in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom (UK) shows how a number of key service outcomes can be measured and achieved through a raft of actions which are commensurate with and exceed the service level recommended by the UK Government. Annual reports covering the work of the Greater Manchester SUDC team are compiled from audit forms completed by the attending SUDC pediatrician for each case...

An online survey examined parent/child adherence to recommended sun safety practices and barriers and enablers to establishing sun safety practices. Adherence to different sun safety practices varied across age groups. Lack of child cooperation was the most commonly-endorsed barrier while child compliance was the most commonly-endorsed facilitator...

We examined how well-baby care nurses perceive communication with parents regarding their children's obesity and identified main communication barriers. Pediatric obesity is a significant public health concern, and health care personnel are among the first to detect overweight and the first to offer assistance to parents. Yet, research suggests that when nurses identify a weight problem in children, they may have trouble initiating this discussion. This qualitative study, using semi-structured interviews with 20 public health nurses, addressed potential obstacles nurses face when discussing young children's weight...

Blood sampling from a peripheral vein in children can be significant. Pediatric nurses should be able to use the techniques which decrease the pain and fear duration of the blood sampling. This research studied the effect of vibration bee and whistling (concentrate on breathing) blood sampling on pain and fear in the children's emergency. In this randomized clinical trial study, 120 children ages 3-6 years referred to a pediatric ward in Najaf, Iraq, using Random Blocking Method, were divided into three groups; vibration bee, whistling, and control group...

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for children and adolescents ages 10-19 in the United States. Globally, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults ages 15-29. The World Health Organization identifies suicide prevention and promotion as a public health priority. In the United States, one of the key prevention strategies has been the recognition of the need for screening, particularly for children and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the Joint Commission recommend suicide risk screening for those ages 10 and older...
