Currently, the diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) mainly relies on clinical examination and subjective evaluation of depressive symptoms. There is no non-invasive, quantitative test available today for the diagnosis of MDD. In MDD, exploration of biomarkers will be helpful in diagnosing the disorder as well as in choosing a treatment, and predicting the treatment response. In this article, it is aimed to review the findings of suggested biomarkers such as growth factors, cytokines and other inflammatory markers, oxidative stress markers, endocrine markers, energy balance hormones, genetic and epigenetic features, and neuroimaging in MDD and to evaluate how these findings contribute to the pathophysiology of MDD, the prediction of treatment response, severity of the disorder, and identification of subtypes...

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects peripheral nerves inducing diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN). Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are potential causes of DPN. Methods: Nerve conduction studies were performed in 20 type 2 DM patients (11 with DPN) and 15 healthy controls. Perception threshold values of cold, warm and vibration were measured by quantitative sensory testing. Variants of a superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) gene single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs5746136) were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and following NexteraXT DNA Library...

Introduction: Compliance with drug treatment is an important issue in schizophrenia for which many scales have been devised. Turkish version of the Drug Attitude Inventory is frequently employed due to ease of use and high predictive value, although it is not as accurate as blood level testing. To determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Drug Attitude Inventory-10. Methods: Eighty-two schizophrenia patients were included in the study. Subjects were evaluated using Drug Attitude Inventory-10, a Sociodemographic Data Form, Positive and Negative Symptom Scale PANNS, Social Functioning Scale, and Quality of Life Scale for schizophrenia patients...

Aim: The development of whole-genome screening methodologies for the detection of copy number variations (CNVs), such as array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCHG), provides a much higher resolution than karyotyping leading to the identification of novel microdeletion and microduplication syndromes often associated with an autism spectrum disease (ASD) phenotype. The aim of the study was to determine CNVs of patients with ASD by using array-based comparative genomic hybridization...

The differential diagnosis of young-onset progressive dementia is an issue that requires effort. Recording the family history and careful clinical evaluation are useful tools in the diagnosis. In case of genetic bases, definitive diagnosis requires molecular analysis. We report consanguineous two patients presenting with young-onset progressive dementia characterized by behavioral changes and with bone cysts. Concomitant bone pathology and inheritance pattern directed us to investigate TREM2 gene, for differential diagnosis, which resulted with the identification of a causative mutation that confirmed the diagnosis of Nasu Hakola disease...

The diagnostic classification systems in psychiatry practice which are used worldwide extensively, The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) are far away from the psychoanalytical point of view. It is thought that this gap results in the difficulty to understand psychiatric patients in clinical practice for many years. It has also created an obstacle to scientific researches addressing the validity and reliability of the psychoanalytical principles...

Methods: MRI parameters of cerebral atrophy, CMBs and WMLs were herein analyzed in relation to global and main domains (attention, executive, memory, visuospatial, language) of cognitive function. Eighty-five patients older than 50, without neurodegenerative/cerebrovascular disease, but had CMBs were recruited from 2562 with T2*-gradient-echo MR imaging during one-year period...
