Introduction Acute kidney injury (AKI) during hospitalization is associated with a mortality increase in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). In 2016, the European Society of Cardiology introduced the category of HF with mid-range ventricular ejection fraction (HFmrEF) as a distinct stratum, between the HF conditions with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Objectives Evaluating the AKI-associated in-hospital mortality risk in AHF patients, with a focus on the HFmrEF group...

Introduction Antibiotic resistance is nowadays one of the most important public health threats. It is mainly caused by inappropriate antibiotic usage. Objectives We aimed to characterize the seasonal trends of antimicrobial consumption (AC) and to assess the possible relation between the influenza incidence and AC in 2014 at the community level in Poland. Patients and methods Antimicrobial consumption, influenza incidence, and the number of inhabitants vaccinated against influenza were examined at the community level...

Introduction Unexplained Sudden Cardiac Arrest (USCA), unrelated to coronary or structural heart disease, occurs in up to 10% of the patients and is often attributed to an inherited arrhythmia syndrome. Family screening and genetic testing may be helpful in clarifying the cause of the USCA. Objectives To assess usefulness of clinical evaluation and genetic testing in patients after USCA and in their families. Patients and methods In the years 2014-2017, we studied 44 unrelated patients after USCA and 96 of their relatives...

New guidelines were promulgated in 2016 on the management of acute diarrhea in adults. The aim of this review article is to (1) give an overview of the context of acute diarrhea and how to generally approach a patient; (2) present some new areas in the field concerning diagnostics, particularly culture independent testing, as well as some of the risks and benefits of treatment; and (3) discuss prevention particularly in the traveler's diarrhea setting.

Introduction During the last decade, aortic stenosis (AS) has emerged as one of the most significant subjects in cardiovascular diseases. Objectives The following study extracted data from the local registry to present the characteristics of AS patients. Patients and methods The report referred to the SILCARD database, which is based on the agreement between Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases in Zabrze and the Regional Department of National Health Fund in Katowice to conduct a comprehensive analysis of patients with cardiovascular diseases in the Silesian Province...

Introduction Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of stroke risk factors and may be associated with impaired platelet reactivity. Objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate the platelet reactivity in patients with CKD using acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). Patients and methods 108 patients with CKD and 41 controls without CKD taking ASA were enrolled in the study. Platelet function was assessed by impedance aggregometry in the whole blood using a multi-channel platelet function analyzer (Multiplate®). Urine concentration of 11-dehydrotromboxane was measured by AspirinWorks®...

Introduction The positive effect of β-blockers therapy in patients with heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) is being questioned. Objectives Assessment of the effect of β-blockers in patients with HF and AF and analysis of the influence of heart rate (HR) control on one-year outcomes in HF-AF patients. Patients and methods Out of 2 019 Polish patients enrolled in two HF registries of the European Society of Cardiology (Pilot and Long-Term), 797 HF-AF patients were divided into two groups depending on β-blockers use...

Introduction Chronic bronchitis (CB) symptoms are commonly reported in subjects without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but CB is rarely diagnosed in these subjects. Objectives We aimed to determine CB prevalence, burden and risk factors in population without COPD. Patients and methods Data from "Action Health - lung cancer prevention and health care improvement program" held in the Proszowice county was used. All county inhabitants aged 40 or above were invited to participate. A questionnaire to ascertain symptoms and risk factors, along with spirometry, both baseline and post bronchodilator, were administered as a part of the program...

Introduction YKL-40 is a protein released locally by inflammatory cells. Thus, it may constitute a biomarker of inflammatory conditions, such as atherosclerosis. Objectives To determine the YKL-40 level in patients with ischemic heart disease, and to analyze the correlation of this biomarker with the severity of coronary atherosclerosis. Patients and methods The study included 158 patients, among them 52 with stable ischemic heart disease and 67 with an acute coronary syndrome: ST elevation (STEMI) and non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI)...
