BACKGROUND: Ambiguous genitalia is an uncommon situation that happens between 1 and 2 per every 1000 live births and falls under the umbrella diagnosis of disorders of sexual development. CASE: In this article, we report a case of male pseudohermaphroditism with ambiguous genitalia. The proband was a 12 yr old girl without any uterus or ovarian tissues. Karyotype of the case is 46, XY. Genes involved in sexual differentiation such as AR, SRD5A2, LH, LHR, FSH, 17 B HSD and SRY genes were sequenced in both directions...

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) is a serious complication of pregnancy with hallmarks of incomplete placentation, placental ischemia and endothelial dysfunction. Imbalance between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), placenta growth factor (PlGF) and their receptors play important role in pathophysiology of PE. OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to asses PlGF mRNA expression in placenta of women affected with PE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, expression of PlGF mRNA was evaluated in 26 mild PE cases, 15 severe preeclamptic women and 20 normotensive controls...

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (MA) was shown to have harmful effects on male reproductive system. OBJECTIVE: To investigate probable effects of daily administration of MA on sperm parameters and chromatin/DNA integrity in mouse. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-five NMRI male mice were divided into five groups including low, medium, and high dosage groups which were injected intraperitoneally with 4, 8 and 15 mg/kg/day for 35 days, respectively...

BACKGROUND: Equity in distribution of resources is considered as an important priority in health care systems. Equitable distribution of obstetrics and gynecology (Ob/Gyn) services in the country level is critical in maternal and neonatal health for qualitative promotion of maternal care in pregnancy, delivery, and post-delivery periods. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed at determining regional disparity of obstetrics and gynecology services and its association with children and infants mortality rates...

BACKGROUND: Testicular damage due to spermatic cord torsion may lead to infertility. It is probably because of changes in oxidative stress factors such as malondialdehyde. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effect of melatonin (MLT), as an antioxidant, on testicular damage induced by acute unilateral spermatic cord torsion and detorsion (T/D) in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental study, 48 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups (8 rats/group): sham group underwent right scrotal surgery only...

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a condition with heterogeneous pathophysiology which characterized by fetal weight less than the tenth percentile for gestational age. Several factors have impact on maternal, placental and fetal due to growth restriction. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between levels of leptin in the cord, and serum leptin of mothers also abnormal color Doppler indices of umbilical artery with fetal growth restriction...

BACKGROUND: Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist protocol has been proposed as a potentially proper option for the patients with limited ovarian reserve. Nevertheless, there is no significant difference in terms of clinical pregnancy between the GnRH antagonist and agonist cycles. The use of aromatase inhibitors such as letrozole was suggested by some studies. OBJECTIVE: The object of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of letrozole co-treatment with GnRH-antagonist protocol in ovarian stimulation of poor responder patients undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection...

BACKGROUND: Based on different studies it was shown that exercise training is an important factor in preconception and prenatal care. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether regular preconception exercise training with or without exercise training during pregnancy decreases detrimental effects of maternal high fat diet on female offspring bone health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four C57BL/6 female mice were fed high-fat diet (35%) and were randomly divided into four groups: trained in preconception period and exercised during pregnancy (TE); trained in preconception periods but unexercised during pregnancy (TC); untrained in preconception periods but exercised during pregnancy (CE); untrained and unexercised (CC)...

BACKGROUND: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is one of the most important complications of assisted reproduction treatment. Many substances are involved in the regulation of the vascular permeability, which have been concerned to cause OHSS. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has emerged as one of the main angiogenic factors, which could be responsible for increased vascular permeability. OBJECTIVE: In this study the association of vascular endothelial growth factor -460C/T and +405 G/C polymorphisms and susceptibility to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome was evaluated...

Conducting research on the stem cell lines might bring some worthy good to public. Human Stem Cells (hSCs) research has provided opportunities for scientific progresses and new therapies, but some complex ethical matters should be noticed to ensure that stem cell research is carried out in an ethically appropriate manner. The aim of this review article is to discuss the importance of stem cell research, code of ethics for stem cell research in Iran and ethical recommendation. Generation of stem cells for research from human embryo or adult stem cells, saving, maintenance and using of them are the main ethical, legal and jurisprudence concerns in Iran...

BACKGROUND: Although leiomyomas are the most common gynecologic disorders, non-puerperal uterine inversion due to leiomyoma is considered as a rare clinical problem. This condition can occur as a complication of a large sub-mucous leiomyoma that leads to dilate cervix and protrude into vagina. The patient may have several symptoms such as heavy vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain and intermittent acute urinary retention. CASE: We presented a 32-year-old nulliparous woman with 17 years of unexplained infertility and diagnosis of a large vaginal prolapsed non-pedunculated leiomyoma...

BACKGROUND: Clomiphene citrate is one of the effective drugs for infertility treatment due to oligo-ovulation or anovulation. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is one of more adherent methods for treatment of infertile cases which is followed by controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH). OBJECTIVE: the aim of this study was to evaluate Clomiphene citrate versus letrozole with gonadotropins in IUI cycles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective randomized trial, 180 infertile women who were referred to Milad Hospital were selected...

BACKGROUND: Endometrial receptivity plays a key role in the establishment of successful implantation and its impairment may contribute to subfertility and limit the assisted reproduction techniques (ART) success. OBJECTIVE: The aim of present study was to investigate endometrial receptivity in terms of β3 integrin, calcitonin and plexin-B1 expression in women with unexplained infertility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated expression of β3 integrin, calcitonin and plexin-B1 through mRNA level measurement with real-time RT-PCR, in the endometrium of 16 infertile women with unexplained infertility and 10 fertile women...
