BACKGROUND: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is well established in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and cervical cancer (CC). However, the association between both HPV related cancers remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between HPV related cancers of the oropharynx and cervix. METHODS: A provincial cancer registry was used to retrospectively identify all patients diagnosed with OPSCC from 1997-2015. The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of CC history in women with p16+/-OPSCC was measured...

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infects and propagates in the cervical mucosal epithelium. Hence, in addition to assessing systemic immunity, the accurate measurement of cervical immunity is important to evaluate local immune responses to HPV infection and vaccination. This review discusses studies that investigated the presence of infection and vaccine-induced HPV-specific antibodies in cervicovaginal secretions (CVS). METHODS: We searched the two main health sciences databases, PubMed and the ISI Web of Science, from the earliest dates available to March 2019...

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Prevention and Control Board convened a meeting in Bucharest, Romania (May 2018), to discuss the role of healthcare providers (HCPs) in prevention programs, with a focus on HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening. International and local experts discussed the role that HCPs can play to increase the uptake of HPV vaccine and screening. Experts recommended: 1) increasing HCP norms of getting vaccinated; 2) training providers to make effective recommendations; 3) making culturally appropriate materials available, in local languages; and 4) centralizing and coordinating education and information material, to direct both HCPs and the general public to the best material available...

AIM: Prophylactic human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines are highly effective at preventing pre-cancerous cervical lesions when given in a three-dose schedule. Some post-hoc trial data suggest that one dose prevents HPV infection. If one dose could prevent pre-cancerous cervical lesions, then global cervical cancer prevention would be greatly facilitated. We assessed the effectiveness of quadrivalent HPV vaccine by number of doses against cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 2 or 3/adenocarcinoma-in-situ (AIS)/cancer in Australia up to seven years post vaccination...

Persons with HIV are at increased risk of HPV infection, HPV disease, and HPV-related cancers compared to HIV negative persons. In persons with HIV, immune responses to vaccination are often sub-optimal, and while these improve with ART, they often remain lower and decline more rapidly than in HIV-negative individuals. Although the evidence base to support the immunogenicity of HPV vaccines in HIV + ve persons is reasonable, the evidence base to support the efficacy of HPV vaccines in HIV + ve individuals is inconsistent...

BACKGROUND: Flat penile lesions (FPL) in heterosexual men are thought to play a role in the transmission of HPV. We investigated the association between FPL and penile HPV, and explored determinants of FPL in men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: In 2015-2016, MSM were recruited based on HIV and penile HPV status in a previous cohort. MSM self-completed a questionnaire. Peniscopy was performed after application of acetic acid to visualize FPL. Penile physician-collected samples were tested for HPV-DNA using the highly sensitive SPF10-PCR DEIA/LiPA25 system...

Papua New Guinea has among the highest estimated burden of cervical cancer globally, but currently lacks national cervical screening or human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programmes. The Papua New Guinean government is committed to introducing the HPV vaccine for primary prevention, but locally-relevant research evidence is not available to guide implementation. Experience from earlier Papua New Guinean health programmes suggests that appropriate engagement with local health cosmologies and cultures for health/wellbeing, illness/disease, and recognition of the role of 'outsiders' in preventing, promoting or contributing to sickness, are essential to the successful introduction of biomedical interventions in this setting...

Two very effective prevention strategies for cervical cancer exist - vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical screening with primary HPV testing followed by treatment of precancerous lesions. In 2018, the World Health Organisation called for action towards achieving the global elimination of cervical cancer, and a strategic plan encompassing elimination goals and targets for the scale-up of HPV vaccination, cervical screening and precancer and cancer treatment, particularly in low and middle income countries, will be presented to the 2020 World Health Assembly...

OBJECTIVE: Compare the effectiveness of community-based HPV-related education and onsite school-based vaccination versus community-based education only for increasing HPV vaccine uptake in a rural, medically underserved area. METHODS: Our cohort included 2307 Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District (RGCISD) middle school students from 3 schools enrolled in August 2016 and followed until April 2018. Using a quasi-experimental design, this study implemented an onsite school-based vaccination program and physician-led education on HPV and HPV vaccines for parents/guardians, school nurses/staff, and pediatric/family providers in the surrounding community (15-mile radius of RGCCISD) at 1 middle school ("intervention school"), and education-only for the remaining 2 schools ("comparison schools")...

BACKGROUND: Some studies on human papillomavirus (HPV) provide not only type-specific incidence rates (IR), but also IRs of HPV groupings (e.g. the nonavalent grouping). We made an inventory of the different approaches used to calculate such IRs and assessed their impact on the estimated IRs of HPV groupings. METHODS: We performed a systematic review assessing all approaches used in literature to estimate IRs. Subsequently we applied these approaches to data of a Dutch cohort study on HPV in men who have sex with men (H2M)...

Intense research activity in HPV modelling over this decade has necessitated additional guidelines to those for general modelling. A specific framework is required to address different policy questions and unique complexities of HPV modelling. HPV-FRAME is an initiative to develop a consensus statement and quality-based framework for epidemiologic and economic HPV models. Its development involved an established process. Reporting standards have been structured according to seven domains reflecting distinct policy questions in HPV and cancer prevention and categorised by relevance to a population or evaluation...

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a benign neoplasm of the larynx caused mainly by human papillomavirus type 6 or 11 and its standard treatment involves repeated surgical debulking of the laryngeal tumors. However, significant morbidity and occasional mortality due to multiple recurrences occur. Conditional reprogramming (CR) was used to establish a HPV-6 positive culture from an RRP patient, named GUMC-403. High-throughput screening was performed at the National Center for Advanced Technology (NCATS) to identify potential drugs to treat this rare but morbid disease...

The linear reverse blotting assays are valid methods for accurate human papillomavirus (HPV) typing required to manage women at risk of developing cervical cancer. However, some samples showed a positive signal in HPV lines but failed to display a positive signal in subsequent typing lines (designated as HPV-X), which indicate that certain types were not available on the respective typing blots. The aim of this study is to elucidate the types or variants of HPV through the high-throughput sequencing (HTS) of 54 ASCUS cervical samples in which the viruses remained untypeable with INNO LiPA HPV® assays...
