Driving safety for older adults with dementia presents a continuing complex challenge in the community. More than 5 million people in the United States suffer from dementia, and their numbers are expected to grow. Evidence-based resources to identify and manage driving risks in older adults with dementia do exist, but the challenges of limited time in primary care and outpatient settings can make application difficult. This innovative project, funded by a Hartford Foundation Change Agents Action grant award, focused on interprofessional work to address the educational need for primary care professionals and family caregivers to manage driving safety for their loved ones with dementia...

Avi Levitt, Jean O ľNeil
The increasing older adult population guarantees that healthcare providers are more likely to encounter patients requiring treatment for unintended weight loss. Due to physiologic changes that occur in the older adult, it is important to know how to assess for, and diagnose unintended weight loss, as well as understand the treatment options. In addition to the use of enteral and parenteral nutrition, appetite stimulants have been used in older adults. Understanding the dosage, side effects, and proper usage of appetite stimulants, such megestrol acetate, mirtazapine, and dronabinol, is crucial in order to provide safe and effective patient care...

Andrew S Bartlett, Sara Parton, Joseph Lattuca
Heart failure (HF) is the most common reason for admission to the hospital in people over the age of 65 and has been found to be a possible complication following a joint replacement. Self-management education has been shown to reduce hospital readmissions rates among patients with HF and to cause significant improvements. The purpose of this case report was to describe physical therapy (PT) self-management education in the care of a patient with both a recent hip replacement (THR) surgery and HF. CASE DESCRIPTION: 85-year-old female with a THR and HF...

Medication literacy is the ability of individuals to access and understand medication information and then use that information to act and take their medication in a safe and appropriate way. The purpose of this study was to explore medication literacy in a group of Somali older adults and their families using qualitative secondary analysis. We conducted an analytic expansion of an existing qualitative study that explored the home healthcare perceptions of Somali older adults and their families. Qualitative data collected from 14 Somali families about home healthcare were reviewed and analyzed for material related to medication literacy...

The home care nurse can be a valuable resource in the management of lice in the home and can assist the family in understanding the various myths and misconceptions about lice. This article provides an overview of lice management, including identification and treatment of a lice infestation as well as recommendations for environmental control strategies in the home...

Human trafficking is a global problem reaping $150 billion annually, mainly from commercial sex or forced labor activities involving adult and child victims. Eighty-seven percent of human trafficking victims are known to have been seen by a healthcare provider at least once during the time held captive, but due to lack of awareness, this opportunity to identify and aid victims is often missed. Home healthcare providers have access to homes where human trafficking victims may be hidden in plain sight. It is critical that home healthcare providers know the signs of human trafficking, how to screen a potential victim, how to report any suspicious activities, and ways to remain safe while working in the community...
