INTRODUCTION: Many clinicians consider chronic gastritis to be equivalent to Helicobacter pylori infection. However, it is known that there are numerous other causes of the condition. AIM: Determination of the incidence of gastritis in patients with dyspepsia referred for diagnostic endoscopy of the upper part of the digestive tract, identification of the parts of the stomach most frequently affected by the inflammation, as well as the impact of an insufficient number of collected samples on the correct diagnosis...

INTRODUCTION: Consumption of gluten proteins leads to an enteropathy characterised by lymphocytic infiltration of mucous membrane, crypts hypertrophy, and atrophy of villi. Enteropathy leads to disturbances in the immune system as well as secondary deficiency of vitamin E. AIM: Analysis of the concentration of vitamin E in erythrocytes of patients with celiac disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three experimental groups were distinguished among 77 patients with histologically confirmed celiac disease (mean age: 17 years): those who strictly respected gluten-free diet (group I, n = 48), patients breaking dietary recommendations (group II, n = 22), and those with newly diagnosed disease (group III, n = 7)...

INTRODUCTION: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and celiac disease (CD) share some gastrointestinal symptoms. Celiac disease should be considered in a differential diagnosis of IBS. AIM: To estimate the prevalence of predispositions to CD in patients with IBS and its subtypes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 48 patients (40 women, 8 men; average age: 41.1 ±14.6 years) with IBS, and a control group: 20 healthy volunteers. All participants completed a questionnaire on their current gastrointestinal symptoms and had a blood sample taken to determine the HLA-DQ2/DQ8 antigens and serum concentration of anti-tTG IgA and anti-DGP IgA and IgG...

INTRODUCTION: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a necrotising vasculitis of small arteries and veins. In its classical manifestation GPA affects the upper and lower respiratory tract and kidneys. However, other organs, including those of the gastrointestinal tract, may be affected as well. AIM: To present the clinical manifestations of gastrointestinal tract involvement in patients with GPA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analysed case records of 34 patients with GPA treated in the Department of Nephrology, Transplantology, and Internal Medicine of the Medical University of Gdansk from 1991 to 2009...

INTRODUCTION: Various components of metabolic syndrome have an important role in the pathogenesis of both non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and psoriasis, suggesting an association between these diseases. However, at present very few studies have reported on the systematic evaluations of the prevalence of NAFLD in patients with psoriasis disorder. AIM: To investigate the prevalence of NAFLD in patients with psoriasis vulgaris. The study also evaluated the parallel relationship between both of the diseases...

INTRODUCTION: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects a large part of the human population. One of the major environmental factors associated with the risk of NAFLD is the lack of physical activity. AIM: To compare the level of physical activity and the insulin resistance in NAFLD patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty patients with NAFLD underwent a six-month dietary intervention based on the principles of classical dietetics. Data about diet and physical activity was based on 72-hour nutrition diaries and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)...

INTRODUCTION: Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy is a visor complication among patients with cirrhosis of the liver, manifesting during stress, exertion, transjuglar intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), or liver transplantation. Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy is reported to be most common cause of post transplant mortality after rejection of 7% to 21%. AIM: To determine the frequency of cirrhotic cardiomyopathy and was further designed to compare parameters of cardiac dysfunction in patients with or without cirrhotic cardiomyopathy...

INTRODUCTION: It is generally accepted that mitochondria are a primary source of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Under physiological circumstances they are permanently formed as by-products of aerobic metabolism in the mitochondria. To counter the harmful effect of ROS, cells possess an antioxidant defence system to detoxify ROS and avert them from accumulation at high concentrations. Mitochondria-located manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD, SOD2) successfully converts superoxide to the less reactive hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)...

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring the response to biological treatment in Crohn's disease (CD) is a very important element of the therapeutic optimisation. AIM: To evaluate the usefulness of measuring calprotectin, lactoferrin, and myeloperoxidase in stool as markers of long-term clinical and endoscopic response to anti-tumour necrosis factor α (anti-TNF) treatment in CD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The studied group consisted of 35 CD patients treated with anti-TNF-α antibodies...

Fats constitute the most significant nutritional source of energy. Their proper use by the body conditions a number of complex mechanisms of digestion, absorption, distribution, and metabolism. These mechanisms are facilitated by fats made of medium chain fatty acids; therefore, they are an easy and quick source of energy. Thus, an increased supply of medium chain triglycerides (MCT) is particularly important in patients with disturbances of digestion and absorption such as disturbed bile secretion, classic coeliac disease, short bowel syndrome, inflammatory diseases of the intestines, disturbed outflow of lymph, some metabolic disease, and severe food allergies, as well as in prematurely born neonates...

Because of different prognosis of gastric cancer patients with the same T and N stages, the impossibility of N3 staging in patients with fewer than 15 removed lymph nodes, and the presence of stage migration phenomenon, the 6(th) edition TNM Staging System for gastric cancer was updated to the 7(th) edition TNM staging system in 2009. Despite some opposing views, the superiority of the 7(th) edition TNM staging system compared to the 6(th) has been demonstrated in many studies. However, there are doubts about the 7(th) edition that it will reduce the stage migration phenomenon...

INTRODUCTION: Major complications of colonic anastomosis include fistula, bleeding, and anastomotic stricture, and the most common one is anastomotic leakage. Many organic or inorganic tissue adhesives are being used such as fibrin glue or cyanoacrylate to strengthen or protect colonic anastomosis. Up to now, a great number of studies have been carried out to investigate the effects of these biomaterials. AIM: To determine the effect of cyanoacrylate application on anastomosis safety...

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) infection is a systemic disorder that can lead to liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular cancer. The mean platelet volume (MPV) is widely used as an inflammatory marker to evaluate the platelet function and the status of systemic inflammation. AIM: To determine the pre- and post-treatment MPV values in CHC patients who were administered a 48-week antiviral therapy based on systemic inflammation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We enrolled 28 patients, diagnosed with CHC genotype 1b, who received a 48-week antiviral therapy and attended regular follow-up, and 28 healthy individuals...

INTRODUCTION: Oesophageal strictures are rare in children but may require endoscopic dilation. AIM: To gather information on centres performing endoscopic oesophageal dilation in Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data were obtained from questionnaires concerning the relevant data mailed to 22 paediatric endoscopy centres. Completed questionnaires were received from 11 centres. RESULTS: In 2010 the 11 Polish paediatric endoscopy centres performed a total of 10,650 endoscopic procedures...
