OBJECTIVE: The mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types. They control the process of haematopoiesis by secreting regulatory cytokines and growth factors and by the expression of important cell adhesion molecules for cell-to-cell interactions. This investigation intended to examine the effect of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) on the differentiation of the HL-60 cells according to morphological evaluation, flow cytometry analysis, andgene expression profile...

OBJECTIVE: Any erythrocyte transfusion among humans having type A or B blood groups is impossible due to antibodies causing fatal transfusion complications. A cross-match test is performed to prevent immune transfusion complications before transfusion. Our hypothesis is that the Fragment antibody (Fab) part of antibody (incomplete antibody) may be used to prevent an immune stimulus related to complete antibody. Therefore, we designed a pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of these incomplete antibodies with using cross-match tests...

INTRODUCTION: Transformed mycosis fungoides (T-MF) is a rare variant of mycosis fungoides (MF) with an aggressive course. OBJECTIVES: In this study we aimed to describe characteristics MF/Sezary syndrome (SS) cases with transformation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with transformed MF (T-MF) among MF/SS patients between 2000 and 2014 in a single center are evaluated retrospectively.Demographic, clinical, laboratory, immunophenotype features, response to treatment, survival and histopathologic features were analyzed...

OBJECTIVE: As the abnormal shortening of telomeres has been shown in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) patients, this study was to find the relationship between the mRNA expression levels of telomere-binding proteins(TRF1/TRF2/TIN2/TPP1/POT1/RAP1) and the risk in MDS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 40 patients with MDS and 40 normal controls were selected for the study. Using telomere content assays and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, we examined the mRNA levels of telomere-binding proteins TRF1/TRF2/TIN2/TPP1/POT1/RAP1 in patients with MDS...

Turkish Society of Pediatric Hematology set up a National Hemoglobinopathy Registry to demonstrate demographic and disease characteristics of patients, and assessed the efficacy of hemoglobinopathy control program (HCP) over 10 years in Turkey. A total of 2046 patients from 27 Thalassemia Centers were registered in which 1988 were eligible for analysis. This cohort mainly comprised patients with β-thalassemia major (n=1658, 83.4%) and intermedia (n=215, 10.8%). The majority of patients were accumulated into the costal areas of Turkey...

OBJECTIVE: Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a promising curative therapy for many combined primary immunodeficiencies and phagocytic disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed paediatric cases that were diagnosed with primary immunodeficiencies and scheduled for haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. RESULTS: We identified 22 patients (median age, 6 months; age range, 1 month to 10 years) with various diagnoses who received haematopoietic stem cell transplantation...

BACKGROUND: To evaluate infection- related mortality in patients with AML treated without preventive antibiotics and antifungals in a middle-income country. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Infection related mortality was evaluated retrospectively in 49 pediatric patients. RESULTS: A total of 173 chemotherapy courses were administered as first-line chemotherapy. Four patients died in the induction; one patient due to intracranial bleeding, two patients due to typhlitis and one patient due to invasive fungal infection with pulmonary vascular invasion and massive bleeding...

We aimed to determine the genotype distribution, allele frequency, and prognostic impact of IDH1/2, TET2, and ASXL1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). TET2 (rs763480), ASXL1 (rs2208131), and IDH1 (rs11554137) variant homozygous genotype frequencies were found at rates of 1.5%, 9.2%, and 2.3%, respectively. No IDH2 SNP was identified. IDH1 and TET2 frequencies were 5% in essential thrombocythemia (ET) and 1.7% in ET and 5% in primary myelofibrosis (PMF), respectively...
