BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We sought to establish normative quantitative contrast sensitivity function (qCSF) values in healthy adult eyes and investigate the effect of age on qCSF. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Healthy eyes underwent qCSF testing (adaptive sensory technology) and Snellen's visual acuity (VA). Descriptive statistics and mixed-effects multivariable linear regressions were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 334 eyes (290 patients) with median age 61 years (range 21 to 88) had qCSF values as follows: area under the log contrast sensitivity function curve: 1...

A 50-year-old woman had visual disturbance in her left eye. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed an epiretinal membrane (ERM) and a giant peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitation (ICC). Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 15/50 in the left eye with central visual field (VF) impairment. We performed vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane "stuffing" into the sinkhole, as well as peeling of the ERM. One year after surgery, even though ocular blood flow had decreased and the VF impairment had worsened, OCT demonstrated that the ICC had completely disappeared, and BCVA had improved to 25/50...

A 33-5/7, 1570 g dichorionic diamniotic twin presented with cryptorchidism, failed hearing examination (both ears), poor feeding, profound hypoglycemia, coagulopathy, conjugated hyper-bilirubinemia, hydronephrosis, and hypotension. Microarray sent with results of whole genome SNP microgray analysis detected an interstitial duplication of the chromosomal segment 4q35 1q35.2. On this basis, telemedicine screening was performed to evaluate for ocular abnormalities in association with abnormal gene testing. Unilateral advanced retinopathy was noted affecting the right eye, with mature vascularization in the left eye...

A 13-year-old Black male patient with a history of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) and sickle cell trait presented with acute painless vision loss and no light perception vision (NLP) in his left eye. The examination was indicative of occlusive retinal vasculitis with near total central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). He was started on oral steroids with dramatic reperfusion and improvement of the retinal hemorrhages. However, his vision remained at NLP. Oral steroids were tapered, and rituximab infusion was initiated...

Indicated for colorectal cancer for decades, bevacizumab has been widely used off label to treat retinal diseases, and the benefits of its use, specifically in neovascular age-related macular degeneration, have been demonstrated in multiple clinical trials. The intravitreal delivery of bevacizumab requires it to be aseptically repackaged into individual syringes by compounding pharmacies for use in the eye. Although the repackaging process is permitted by the US Food and Drug Administration, the resultant product does not meet the specific standards of products approved for use as ophthalmic injectables nor is the parenteral innovator solution compliant with ophthalmic standards...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Dexmedetomidine (Precedex® ) has been linked to depressive hemodynamic effects and increased length of stay in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) when used in ambulatory phacoemulsification procedures. We aimed to determine the prevalence and impact of dexmedetomidine use during ambulatory vitreoretinal procedures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study involved 9,666 adult vitrectomies. Cases were divided into groups by anesthesia type: general anesthesia (GA) and monitored anesthesia care (MAC)...

Occlusive vasculitis is a rare complication following an uneventful surgery. In this article, we report two cases of optic disc pit maculopathy that underwent scleral graft and developed vasculitis following uneventful surgery. Both patients underwent autologous scleral graft for optic disc pit maculopathy through 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy. Scleral graft was harvested from patient's same eye and plugged in the optic disc pit. After a postoperative period of approximately 3 months, both patients developed features of occlusive vasculitis with vitreous base contraction...

This case report describes a 74-year-old woman who developed a crystalline retinopathy following intravitreal injection of clindamycin. The patient presented with ocular toxoplasmosis in the left eye but was allergic to sulfa medications, so she was treated with intravitreal clindamycin. Subsequently, fine refractile yellow-white crystals were observed on examination of the left macula. Optical coherence tomography localized the crystals to the posterior hyaloid. Intravitreal clindamycin should be considered in the differential diagnosis of crystalline retinopathy...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Monitoring the response of retinoblastoma to globe-salvaging therapies is based on subjective assessments of changes determined by fundoscopy, ultrasound, and optical coherence tomography. Advances in organ-preserving therapies have increased the need for objective, quantitative estimates of tumor response to treatment. Primary tumor volume is a metric that can be objectively determined as a surrogate measure of treatment response. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated the correlation of objective, quantitative estimates of tumor volume made with two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound with gold standard pathological tumor volumes derived by analysis of enucleation specimens...

Photographic imaging documented vitreous opacification, which was absent in the fellow twin. Retinal opacification was presumed secondary to embolic sepsis and responded to systemic antibiotics. Subsequent dropout of vascularized retina corresponded to areas of retinal opacification. In this report, two rare cases of large atrophic peripheral retinal holes are described. Both patients presented during a routine visit without reporting any ocular symptoms. The holes did not exhibit significant risk factors for progression to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: No signs of posterior vitreous detachment, vitreoretinal tractions, or retinal degeneration were visible. For such asymptomatic cases, international guidelines recommend a strict follow-up schedule; however, the unusual size of the holes raised significant concerns about the management of these retinal breaks...
